Singer MC Mong, 31, is suspected of having dodged mandatory military service by intentionally having healthy teeth extracted.

Police said they have been conducting an investigation of the singer following an allegation that he illegally avoided military service.

According to the police, the singer had removed some 10 teeth, mostly molars, and was exempted from compulsory military service in 2004 due to dental problems.

"We had planned to summon him Thursday, but he requested time to consult with his lawyers," a police officer said. "We will question him next week to hear explanations on why he had so many of his teeth pulled out."

MCMong, whose real name is Shin Dong-hyun, is a popular singer and actor currently appearing on KBS's variety show "1 Night 2 Days" on Sundays.

Police finished an inquiry into the dentist who took care of his teeth.

They also asked for experts' opinions on the dental X-rays, but could not definitely conclude whether it was for medical purposes or not.

However, IS Entermedia, the singer's agency, immediately refuted the allegation of dodging military service.

"He was exempted from military service because of his dental problems, but there was nothing illegal about it. His exemption from military service is legitimate," it said in a press release.

The agency's judicial team said they will clear up the allegations during police questioning and consider taking legal action against the local broadcasting station that first reported the news.

MCMong made his debut in 1998 as a member of the hip hop band People Crew and gained popularity after starring in the hit sitcom series "Non-Stop 4" in 2003.

The following year, he released first solo single "180 Degrees." He also collaborated with other singers such as Park Hyo Shin, Ivy, and MayBee. His latest album "Humanimal" was released in July 2009.

I think that even if I say I would, I probably wouldn't. There's a sense of responsibility/duty that comes with going to the military in places where it's compulsory.

Oh snap! :o

Wait, how does missing a few teeth get you out of the army?

Date: 2010-07-02 01:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kawaiiairbender.livejournal.com
maybe removing that many teeth means you aren't healthy/fit enough to serve?
I know people don't even mention things like cavities when they're going into the AF because they want to be excepted. There is nothing wrong with you at all. At least that's what a few people told me...

idgi.
how can he dodge military draft by pulling his teeth and saying he has bad teeth?
if they were taken in 2004, that gives him more than enough time to recover and do his military service.
not that i'm condemning him for dodging military service... that's damn smart.
i just find it strange that he got away with that silly excuse o___ô

I....hope he wasn't dodging military service. That's a low move, and I don't think that's right at all.

That being said, I would feel terrible if he had to leave for the army. He is seriously doing so well right now, and I doubt he'd be able to gain as much momentum when he gets back.

Another article says:
It has become known that the dentist in charge of MC Mong commented, “I pulled his tooth because he said that it hurt, not to help him skip his military service.”

MC Mong’s management stated, “MC Mong has been suffering from a periodontal disease before he entered his 20s, which is why he pulled his tooth. It is true that he did receive an exemption from his military service, but it was not due to him cheating the law. We will accept the investigation honorably.”

True or not, surely there are easier and less disfiguring (and painful!) ways to get out of compulsory service.

The whole Korean army/serving issue will always remind me of YSJ, Teddy... and B-Free, who went to the army, but was fighting against it & the system in general.

Ten teeth might seem like a lot but I had eight pulled (I have a tiny mouth) and it's unnoticeable. I am not sure why that would exempt him from service, unless there were complications.

At my father time, they were playing dumb to be exempt of their military duties.

Far more easy.
