Korean hip hop star Tablo was at the height of his career when a rumor started spreading on the internet that he was a liar. As a trivial accusation explodes into an international obsession, host Dexter Thomas Jr follows a bizarre conspiracy that asks one fundamental question: are we who we say we are? From VICE and iHeart Podcast Network.

Introducing Authentic: The Story of Tablo

Tablo was a Korean hip hop superstar in 2010. Then it all came screeching to a halt, when a rumor on the internet ballooned out of control. From VICE and iHeart Podcast Network, a series that explores why a bizarre conspiracy divided a country and turned into an international obsession.

1. God-Blo

A Korean superstar. A genius rapper. A liar and a cheat. Labels like these have followed Tablo for more than a decade. And now, he’s ready to tell the whole truth, once and for all.

2. Tajinyo

Parents loved Tablo for his Stanford pedigree and teens for his rebellious attitude. But this dichotomy that made for great TV, would also draw in a new set of haters.

Haven't listened to it yet (because the story still makes me mad tbh). Also on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher & iHeart

Im gonna figure out a non-spotify way to listen to this. But his story has always intrigued me. It happened before i started listening to kpop and reading about it in hindsight was literally just like ?????? What the fuck ??? How despite all the proof, the witch hunt still persisted. And then Woolim absolutely dropping the fucking ball at protecting him? A perfect storm

I only followed this from far, until Tablo's solo debut when I felt I needed to read up on his experience to fully understand his writing and the itimacy of the album. I have missed so much overall, and this podcast will certainely help me/educate myself even further.
I hope Woollim are not shielded in any way, they really dropped the ball on him from what I remember. Them supporting Jisoo later doesn't negate the harm they allowed to happen to Tablo.

i don't fuck with epik high after they decided to keep supporting z*co despite his golden phone involvement but tablo' s story being told directly by him is something i'm really interested in. i took a very deep dive into it around his solo album release and it still sends shivers down my spine. being scared for his newborn daughter life just because his cousin decided to go off the rails like that? it's almost hard to imagine an unfounded lie without any proof about someone else's eduction getting this big and terrifying. it wasn't even just his career being in shambles for no reason at all but others tried to actively harm him and his family just because someone said he lied about his education.

I did not know Epik High supported z**co and I do wonder looking back if any of the members regret it. I don't even remember how or why this rumour even started

they released a song with him in 2021 so they def don't regret anything.
it started with just TaJinYo popping out of nowhere and claiming that tablo lied about his education. since it's sk and degrees are taking more seriously than elsewhere... well.. it turned out like that.
there is an article in stanford magazine (https://stanfordmag.org/contents/the-persecution-of-daniel-lee) online back from 2011 which gives a rundown of it if anyone is interested!

I'll find time to listen to this. I was in my 2nd yr of being a kpop fan I think when this came out. I never really had the chance to look fully into this so it would be an interesting topic to listen to.

I was a big fan of Epik High and of Tablo's writing at the time which he credited to his education and prof at Stanford, so that influenced my school choice. Then I did a similar coterm program, which people had used as ammo against him since they couldn't believe that you can complete your BA/MA in that short of a time despite clear evidence from the school that it was an option that undergrad students can apply for.

Fun fact: he made an appearance at the Asian American student org I had joined a year later and was picked up at the airport by someone I knew.
