Hey party people, happy Friday! Every week I check the charts for this day in the past and post the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. Let’s see out what was on top for the 1st week of September, 2016. 5 years ago now! A whole hand! Most of the songs were posted before, so we will see some comeback stages.
#3 I.O.I “Whatta Man (Good Man)”
I’ve only really listened to the song once, from when I posted the MV last time. I have memories of the Salt-N-Pepa/En Vogue song, so I always avoided this one from the opening line lol. This was a song featuring the 7 members who made up I.O.I’s unit group. The song would debut and peak at #2 on the charts. It was also be the group’s first ever music show win. Here’s the group’s M Countdown comeback stage, with its choreography from Chungha.
#2 Blackpink “Whistle”
This was one of the two songs that the group made their debut with. I remember waking up to the two music videos and watching them before coming on Omona. I preferred (and still do) “Whistle”, but everyone was talking about the other song and it made me feel like I was missing out lol. “Whistle” would debut at the top spot, making it the group’s first #1 song, where it would stay for a few weeks. Here’s their first performance of the song, from their music show debut on Inkigayo.
#1 EXO “Lotto”
I can never place this song by the name, but when I hear it I know it’s the one with the lip tint lol. Remember that lip tint was everywhere back then? This was the lead single from the repackaged album of the same name. The song was deemed unfit for broadcast by a few networks because it referred to a brand (lottery ticket). So they swapped “lotto” for “louder” in the track name and the lyrics, and were allowed to promote on MBC, KBS, and Mnet. Here’s the “Louder” comeback stage at Music Core.
Honorable Mentions
#6 VIXX “Fantasy”
This was the single from the group’s single album, “Hades”. It was the second part of their “VIXX 2016 Conception” trilogy, in between “Zelos” and “Kratos”. I don’t remember any of the songs from the trilogy, which is weird for me because I usually remember something. The song was released just the day before the start of their “Elysium” tour, where the first live performances would take place.
#7 Wonder Girls “Why So Lonely”
This was a release to celebrate the girls’ 10th anniversary. It was their first single that was not written by JYP, and instead written by Sunmi, Lim, Yubin, and songwriter Hong Jisang. The group also played their own instruments on the track. It would hit the top spot on the charts and in my heart tbh. The song would win four music show trophies, their first music show wins since “Like That” in 2012. “Why So Lonely” would end up as their penultimate release. Here’s the group’s comeback stage at M Countdown. Miss them so much!
