It's a very nice and chill album. I'll be back to comment on it later but I really liked most of it on my first few listens. Dis-ease and Telepathy are current fav!

I'm back with my thoughts all sorted out! I can say it now but I was sorta expected to be deeply disappointed by this album and it sucked. What's with only 6 new tracks? And including Dynamite?? But thank god, I was NOT disappointed, far from it! I can't compare BE with their previous albums bc imo it's more a mini than a full LP so there's not really enough to compare, but as far as minis go, I love this one. The mood is exactly what I needed right now and (minus Dynamite) I think it's their most cohesive release in years! I'm definitely buying the album now!

My ranking (Dynamite aside) would be as follow : Telepathy > Stay > Dis-ease > Life Goes On > Blue and Gray > Fly to my room

Telepathy : issa bop. Instant fav! The autotune is terrible in some parts but I love it anyway!! It's not their best song by a long shot but it's the serotonin boost I need right now! The beat is irresistible, it makes me want to get up and awkwardly dance my way through my flat. It has a retro vibe that I'm really feeling lately! It's the kind of song I can listen to in any circumstances!!

Stay : I was pretty neutral on that one at first but then I replayed it while driving and it really hit me how good it is. The melody is great and the song is very uplifting!! I'm a sucker for EDM!BTS (Wings, So what, Euphoria are some of my personal fav) so I'm not surprised this ended up being one of the highlights of the album for me! ! The vocals are gorgeous (JK and Jin's voices blend perfectly, just like they did on Jamais Vu) and Namjoon is by far my fav rapper in BTS so this was a match made in heaven for me.

Dis-ease : It's great great great!!! Hobi's touch is super obvious but I don't mind it one bit, he's grown to become one of my fav BTS member. The beat is super funky and they sound GOOD. There's way less autotune in this song than in some others. The bridge is amazing and so is Yoongi's rap. It reminds me of older BTS songs that I love, like Ma City.

Life Goes On : It's not Spring Day 2.0 for sure but I really love it. It's super chill and nostalgic and I find it very comforting. The instrumental is beautiful and the whole song feels very ephemeral in the way Spring Day did, expect it's a little less sad! Jungkook and Hobi sound really good and Namjoon's rap is great. Once again, we could have done with less autotune on Tae/Yoongi's parts!!

Blue and Gray : This one is absolutely gorgeous. Musically, it's probably the best song on the album tbh. I'm really not in the mood for depressing songs right now so it ranks a little low for me but I'm pretty sure it will become one of my fav with time. They all sound super raw here. Vocal line prove they don't need so much autotune all the time and Suga really shines with his rap.

Fly to my room : It's cute and the beat is nice I guess? Hobi saves that song tbh. I'm really not a fan of Jimin's whiny voice and there's a lot of it here. It would have been a lot better if the producers hadn't murdered Tae and Yoongi's voices with autotune. Also, Yoongi's rap is kind of mediocre here : too much yayaya's and not enough actual rapping...

No real comment on Dynamite. I've said enough about it already. I still love it for the harmless bop it is but it doesn't really mesh with the rest of the album.

Fly to my room, life goes on
Stay
Dynamite is fun but very disconnected from the rest lol

This album is very fan oriented imo
There is no "HIT" or "IT" song, but it's nice enough
TBF there is no TT in the album

I enjoy Blue & Grey quite a lot... I find it more touching that "Life goes on". Although both are B-side rather than TT.
"Blue & Grey" would have more potential live imo, it would make for a very cute and emotions packed stage.

"Telepathy" is that reto inspired song that would have make a cute stage perf. right now, interesting shared stage with some GG, exchange... (if Sir Rona wasn't ruining everything - yes excuse me but Rona clearly si a guy: annoying, unwanted, overstay his welcome, I mean, clearly!!!)

You're right about there being no standout song in this album. I like Telepathy, Dis-ease and Stay cuz they're bops, but I don't have a fave that I prefer over the others. I guess in that regard, the album is pretty cohesive.

I find B&G superior to LGO as well. I feel like it has more of an impact because I feel more emotions listening to that than LGO.

That was one unnecessary long ass skit Jesus

As always they lost me at the autotune. I think the songs would have sounded much better if the vocals were less processed.

I'm also conflicted bc for a couple of songs the first half is a bit meh and I want to hit next but then the second half gets much better and has potential?

Blue & Grey is lovely

All in all, I don't think it will be an album that I will reach out to listen to voluntarily

i've listened to the album once and it's short but sweet to me. it's a pretty simple album with no specific highlights for me (no 'black swan' or 'ugh', songs that really stood out to me in their previous albums) but one thing that i really like is that the album is really consistent to me and i like all the songs in their own right, they sound like/suit bts (except for dynamite, which is the odd one out why did they add that song?)

my faves are telepathy and dis-ease,
stay is a great follow up to moon!
from the chill & comforting trio blue & grey, fly to my room and life goes on, i think i like blue and grey the most!

i read the translation of the skit and i thought it was cute :( yoongi swearing (?) and them having to beep it out was really funny

My favourites are Fly to My Room, Telepathy, and Dis-ease. Life Goes On is ok but nothing groundbreaking. Blue and Grey is good but I’d have to be in a very specific mood to listen to it without crying. Stay is a skip for me I’m not an edm fan soz.

I love how the first half of the album is really chill and mellow and somehow has a sad vibe? But then after the skit, it gets much more upbeat and it's a lowkey party lol. But with depressing lyrics. But a party. Lmao.

Anyway, my faves (for now) are Blue & Grey, Telepathy, Dis-ease and Stay. Which is almost the whole album, actually haha. But yeah. I love it. I agree with the person who said it's a fan oriented album and I like that. BTS and their music really continue to be a comfort to me.

aw, I meant to vote for Fly to my room not Life goes on, at least it would have one vote

I love Blue & Grey. The melody is so beautiful. Telepathy is a lot of fun. I like parts of Stay a lot and then hate others lol. So that might be my least favourite just cause there's those jarring bits.
Fly to my room (my phone always wants to change this to Fly to the moon) is also one of my faves idk I'm just vibing with it.

it's surprisingly cohesive as an album. The skit workst quite well to switch from the melancholy half to the depressed party bops half.

Ban Autotune 2021

From most to least liked:

Blue & Grey - I love instrumentals, so I love love love the strings. But I don't really like breathy singing. I still prefer it over autotune tho. Also I just love Jin's voice. Like he's so pleasant to listen to.
Fly to My Room - Jimin has never sounded so good, why is Taehyung's voice so autotuned? Generally I like this song. It'll be nice to vibe to.
Disease - I love the music in this. It starts a bit hope-world-y which i could never hate, but it seems then to switch into dynamite-tune, so it's a bit of a mashup of known flavours and production tricks that I just... don't rly like.
Stay - It's overall nice but so boring to me.
Life Goes On - meh to me. That autotune on Suga's voice is horrid, let the cutie sing with his real voice! We've already heard it and know that he can!
Telepathy - that... autotune. just. why. ok which one of the producers loves autotune so much? suga bby is it you? this needs to stop it doesn't sound good.

Am I gonna listen to any of these songs again? I don't think so. Or well, ok, maybe B&G.

so my song ranking is stay > blue & grey > dis-ease > life goes on > telepathy > fly to my room

blue & grey is amazing, they all sound so good and the autotune is minimal which is normally why i end up loving their slower/sadder songs so much more even though i love hype songs in general. taehyungs voice is made for sentimental songs.

telepathy is great too even though it doesn't really have a stand out chorus but realistically i'll end up playing this more than some of the other songs just because it doesn't have a sad vibe and i need to be in the right mood for emotional songs

dis-ease i was ready to put at the bottom of my ranking at the beginning but by the end of the song i loved it lmao

i can't not love stay cause jin and jungkook have my favourite voices and namjoon is my fav from the rap line even though i dont absolutely love edm style songs in general (its mostly the prechorus that sounds a bit jarring) i still love it i would absolutely kill for an acoustic version of this song it's all i want

i'll say it again in this post the album lacks jin and i am completely biased but i don't understand people who don't like his voice when it's always stable and never shrill

The album is better than I thought.. I like it more than MOTS series.

However, it’s a Mono Part 2 and I just can’t completely get into it. I’m reminded of Lauryn Hill’s chorus lyrics in Superstar: the album doesn’t inspire nor moves me higher. I get that the purpose of the album is to reflect their thoughts during the pandemic, but I want music that moves me from one emotional state to another. This album keeps me In the same place I started when I began listening to it.

The autotune. Bless. I get some of the stylistic tones they want to express with their feelings but it seems more of a mask to hide their minimal vocal capabilities. I want to like Fly to my Room but ugh. The songs that I like the most are the ones with the least autotune—Stay, Dis-ease, and Blue and Grey. Stay really stood out to me.

I really was looking forward to Telepathy but the excessive use of autotune took me out.

I didn’t listen to the songs on the album in order. I haven’t read the lyrics yet either. That’ll be on to do list while I’m traveling today, My first impression is I may have bought the physical album if it didn’t cost $60. If I did, I wouldn’t have listened to it to much—just a few songs.

THIS

Like I know ARMY want to believe that BTS are the best singers out there and that they just use autotune for 'stylistic' purposes, but I feel like it's more so that they cover up their weaknesses vocally - unfortunately, the autotune doesn't exactly make the song more pleasant to hear and it would have been better for them to just sing in their normal ranges.

Date: 2020-11-20 10:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] evilcoc0nut.livejournal.com
lol that's why I'm either pro-autotune for them or just prefer rapline to carry the song, which is why i also vastly prefer old BTS. they are not good singers.

Autotune can be used tastefully and in a way that actually enhances the song, most times when they add autotune it sounds a little jarring or doesn't add as much to the song as they think it does. I prefer their older sound but there are some of their newer songs that I really vibe with.

Every time I see comments calling them the 'nation's vocalists' and that they 'outsing your faves', I'm just like 👀

As someone who has listened to all their albums and seen their performances, I'll admit that they are excellent performers but they are not the strongest vocalists out there. They have improved since debut, but they still are not up to par with other vocalists in the industry - because they don't have the range and they lack the technique.

I mean, yes they cover up their inability to sing well in that dolphin range pdogg inexplicably loves and worships, but they also unnecessarily go ham on it.

the Dynamite "live" performances (so with a more raw sounding track lol) sounded wayyyy better to me than the overly processed studio recording (aside from Jin IMO who gets very shrill in that register unfortunately). They need to pitch the songs lower and also lay off the autotune. Their old songs had less of it and they sounded fine! listen to me pdogg!

Blue & Grey sounds nice bc it has them sing lower - notice how nice Jin sounds here - and some falsetto sprinkled in for effect, not the whole damn chorus like in too many of their songs.

hey instead of making Taehyung sing in the tenor/dolphin range, they should just write all the songs for his range and let them sing that. Instant fix.

Date: 2020-11-20 11:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] aeries-amethyst.livejournal.com
PDogg needs to get over his love for all things high pitched and tone it down a few octaves. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't go overboard with it.

I prefer the live performances of Dynamite by far because they sing it in a lower range - not by much but it's still an improvement. Jin and Jimin tend to get very shrill, it's even more grating because they have nasally undertones - it's also the reason why I can't stand listening to Fake Love. They sounded better in their older songs because they were lower and I liked that.

Blue&Grey is absolutely lovely. They all sounded wonderful. I was pleased that they not only let Taehyung sing in his actual range, but they had Jimin and Jin sing lower as well - this is the kind of range I want them to stay in. Give me some falsetto here and there, not throughout the whole song. If they had the vocal ranges to belt to their hearts content then fine, but seeing as they don't, let them stick to a comfortable range that they can actually execute on stage.

c/p from ontd:

Blue & Grey and Dis-ease are my stand out tracks - they seem like a proper, mature and evolved version from HYYH. Blue & Grey is a great attempt at the wistful, acoustic indie track by Taehyung, whereas Dis-ease feels like Hobi has truly finetuned his composing skills while maintaining that 90's hiphop flavour pre-LY BTS. It makes me wish that they were given the chance to focus on producing more in the past two years compared to the taxing tours. MOTS7 was a whole filler album on its own.

I appreciate that the rapline gets to rap more in this compared to their past couple of albums that were sorely miss.

Jimin's voice is beyond damaged, but also some of the vocal autotunes and mixing in this continues to be terrible.

As a former stan, it feels bittersweet because I no longer have the emotional connection to truly vibe with this album on a regular basis.

So I’m a depressed horre and I’m always into depressing and melancholy songs but...this isn’t my favorite album. I think MOS:7 was stronger but I understand the vibes they were going with. Plus I can’t believe how short this album is. The backing instrumentals are SO good though. If I had to choose an order of faves I would say Blue & Grey, Life Goes On, Telepathy, Stay, Dis-ease, Fly To My Room

I won’t choose dynamite because it grew on me but I don’t feel as if it fits the cohesiveness of the album. This does feel like an album dedicated to fans for relaxing at home but has a couple tracks that would work well for a concert setting. Overall it’s not my fave but I do have songs that I’ll add to playlists. Do we think we’re gonna get a repackage with more songs?

I'm going to BE honest.
This is a chill album.

I like shit that slaps, they are not my top slow song group.
I 😍 V.

I don't like skits like at all. Taking up space, save it for the 20 min mark outro hidden gem.
I remember giving them shit on the debut release.
Anyway well done.

Blue & Grey >>>>>>> Life Goes On

LGO isn't the SD I wish it was but it's something I can listen to whilst I'm in a chill mood. It doesn't hit me in the feels, but B&G certainly does. I'd say B&G is arguably one of their best ballads (it's up there for me with Butterfly and House of Cards).

I don't care much for Fly to My Room but it's a cute bop. Sorry vmin, this song isn't doing it for me and neither is that autotune.

Telepathy, Dis-ease and Stay are such jams! I love them all equally, I can't actually choose a fave lol These are gonna be replayed a lot. Actually, on second thought...Maybe I like Stay the most. Giving me them Moon tease and I love that! I'm even jamming to Dynamite again even though I'm tired of hearing that damn song lmao

That being said, the album was more upbeat than I expected it to be with LGO and B&G being the only slow songs. I'd say it had a decent balance. I like it more than I expected to, it was cohesive. Would I spend $60 on this? No. Because quite frankly, I'm spending that much money on any album. They've already managed to sell almost 2 million in the first 2 hours of release so BTS are quite fine without me dropping big bucks on them. ARMY have enough money to make this comeback a success so they're right on track to breaking more records and winning more awards.

I am enjoying Life goes on, but I just listened to other songs only once. I will have to listen to them all again to see if I will buy the album, or just put it on my christmas list, or maybe just buy the downloads instead of the album. With Christmas coming and having to get surgery on my eyes I am having a hard time justifying 50 to 60 dollars. I was hoping they would just sell BE as a cd withing the deluxe package. It's nice to have all of the extra's they have in the album but I don't really need it.

This was a very chill BTS album which I appreciate. I really like how all the members had hands in producing and creating the album - this makes it more personable.

I don't mind that it's a mini-album mostly because MOTS:7 had like 12 tracks or something. I'm also glad they didn't go OTT and give us unnecessary fluff. The album flows for me - especially the first half.

Some thoughts - Dynamite is not the standout track.
