Former Orange Caramel and After School‘s Lizzy updated an instagram story on 8 October where she shared screenshots of the music video from WJSN CHOCOME, along with the following caption.

"I hope that WJSN will go beyond what OC has💛
#Hmph! hwaiting!
But there’s some overlapping things with Orange Caramel, including the music video concept. “Aing~”, “Abing abing”, “Magic Girl”, “Catallena” 😀 hmph hmph~ ❤️

Raina, Nana and Lizzy are the best.❤️"

Some fans saw this as Lizzy being sarcastic and shady, and it got more and more attention. A WJSN fan DM'ed Lizzy about it and this is their conversation:

What's your opinion? Is Lizzy sincere or was she shading and is now backtracking?

Honestly? I think she was in her feelings over it and it reminded her of the good days when she was in Orange Caramel and then also the bad days when AS and OC just fell off the map with no explanation and they were clearly left to just rot by their agency, and that brought up a lot of ugly emotions. Lizzy's had a difficult road image-wise (being the "ugly one" in after school before her ps and then the way knetz have been so awful about her since she got all her ps) and just having your career disappear under your feet like that can't have helped so I think this just overwhelmed her and she acted out without really thinking? Yeah she was a little rude and shady but tbh I'm not willing to hold this against her. I feel like I can recognise and empathise with her thoughts in this because I know I've felt similar things before I got you know, medication and therapy.

She acted out and was careless just like she says and got her hand bit and has probably learned her lesson. Idk there's more egregious things that idols have done than shade a group for having a similar concept. For this one commenter who was nice to her she probably got 100s of DMs, tags etc of nasty to downright criminal things said to and about her over a messy instagram story, so I'm not going to criticise her for being a bit sloppy in her response.

i would be kinda butthurt too if my group was left in limbo and another group debuts with the same concept too
not that OC had dibs on any concept lol but they were unique enough to draw comparisons

I feel like Lizzy has a lot of unresolved issues, and if she had posted it at an earlier point before chocome started promoting or released the concept, she would probably get more sympathy. but context in this case plays an important role. even after chocome finished promotions, she might have had an easier time to talk about it

Good. Girls supporting girls. I love it!

Childish. This part was unnecessary. If she wanted to call attention to Orange Caramel, she could have said something like "reminds me of my Orange Caramel. Miss them so much" But instead this translation seems to be saying "Orange Caramel was here first and we were better". I think it's poor wording.

We all know the WJSN song is in the mould of OC, so there are no lies.

I bet she was feeling a mixture of emotions, I mean seeing a younger group doing your concept when your own singing career grinded to a halt...

I would vote that she had some shades of negative feelings and wasn't really able to mask that, and regretted it afterwards.

[I remember her also getting defensive when she was on a programme with Yerin when Yerin said something along the lines of Gfriend having the hardest girl group dances]

NGL those well wishes when she went into hyperbole about WJSN sounded insincere to me.

But of course translations might change the tone.

It's the kind of thing you should vent in private with your best mates.

I should add, that these are all very human responses, and I am not out to criticise her for what she said.

I agree that translations are often poor but with the exchange she has with another native Korean speaker it seems that a lot of Korean speakers also sensed the negativity in her post so I think in this case her tone wasn’t lost in translation. I agree with the first comment on this post that she was in her feelings, a lot of which is justified given how her career went.

Eta: I agree with your comment as well!! Just wanted to point out that specific part about her tone maybe being lost in translation 🙃

Hi

With the tone, I just meant more specifically her response where she said she wanted chocome to surpass OC with the ear catching melody and cutie concept. That felt a bit insincere to me.

Her original comment was defo a bit bitter.

They should thank Lizzy for promoting them. Because of her, I checked out the song. I didn't even know that WJSN had a subunit out.

Ehh she’s allowed to say her thoughts and it sounds like fans are more butthurt about her pointing out that the concept is too similar than her “being rude”. Honestly people let idols get away with graver stuff; she doesn’t deserve bashing over something she said at the heat of the moment

I can understand why she's butthurt but this is probably something she should say in private, not post about because it comes off as very contrary.

I'd be butthurt too if I was shelved by a shit company despite both AS and OC having actual national hits.
OC is still played on the streets so fck you pledis and your one day boy group song library.

And we all know this one unit is a blatant cheap rip off from OC so go ahead Lizzy.

Lizzy has had many missed opportunities from Running Man to other singing opportunities, so she definitely has a lot of emotions bubbling. the wasted potential of her career definitely plays a big part. she probably could have left it at cheering for chocome in one post, and then talking about OC in another post and that might have worked in her way more. but then again people will find fault for anything

It's a little shady but it seems like "have fun with our concept, hopefully your label won't shaft you like us" more than anything.

It kind of reminds me of when Sunye(? iirc) posted about Ladies' Code's "Pretty Pretty" and said that it reminded her of when the Wonder Girls were promoting "Nobody." Her post was a genuine reminds-me-of-the-good-ole-days post and it seems like Lizzy doing a more biting version of that because of her bad blood with Pledis.

Basically what I said in the ffaf - she inserted her foot in mouth lol and it’s not the first time she has, so I’m not surprised if she does it again tbh

I completely agree that she doesn’t deserve hate messages over this but I also feel like ‘being in her feelings’ doesn’t really mean much, we all get in our feelings but people also have a right to react if it is being made public. If she posted about how Pledis disappointed her and screwed over her and her members - I would’ve been all for it, cheering her on lol. But what she did post, eh this was pretty silly and I think she could’ve gone about it differently. Nothing to hate her for but she needs to be careful and think things through *shrugs*

I just listened to the song and yeah, it's very OC-y. But I like it, this silly kind of song and concept and seeing as OC won't release any new songs I'm happy another group decided to scoop up the concept.

That aside.. yeah, she sounded a bit salty but, just like several others in this post has said, I can totally see why she would feel that way and I don't think we should be too harsh on her. Just, in the future, wenting this kind of thing is probably done best in private to a friend or two, not on SNS.
