I’ve watched this MV approximately two(2) times. I have been indulging with gifs of taehyung though. Anyway congrats to them because this is a huge achievement but god I’m so tired of the views being a bragging point of fans.

Same. Tbh I was more interested in WAP’s view growth, as it felt like a moment. Like you had to tune in to see what people were talking about. I know Kylie was a draw for people but it was early when I watched I didn’t know she was in it I just saw the song and MV blowing up on social media. It was very different from anything from kpop.

Yeah the dynamic of the American music scene compared to kpop feels more chart driven? I know in the end streams are important but it’s the militant streaming pressure for kpop groups for me and after a while that just loses its appeal. Back in the day I feel as if views were important but not enough that people would judge you for not streaming like you don’t have a damn life lol.

and WAP had ~organic growth (lmaoo) like it wasn't fandoms zombie streaming, it was an actual moment, where 2 black women were in the spotlight and made a huge thing, even if Dynamite gets the No 1 spot WAP is already an actual hit and probably will stay on charts for a long time.

it is getting annoying how competitive people are getting over this, i'm all for being happy for your favs because you helped them but sometimes it's more them living through other people's achievements than them being happy for BTS , but also that's all stan twitter

it was until i jouned kpop fandoms that i saw how annoying stan twitter was because the groups i liked were mostly rock old groups, my fav group is Depeche Mode and nobody cares if they chart or not, but with this it's extremely annoying , if i didn't get updates fast with twitter and wasn't a way for me to interact with other people in the fandom i wouldn't use it, people do the most.

Yea back in the late 00s/early 2010s I never paid attention to views like that when I watched kpop music videos. Gangnam Style was probably the first time I paid attention, but like WAP it was a moment, it took momentum to build but it really was an experience I never had before. Not related to YouTube, but I was driving to work and Gangnam Style played on the radio. I had to pull over because I was in disbelief that a kpop song, one that I was regularly listening to already, was on mainstream American radio.

But yea all this obsessing over views, I’m glad I don’t have to deal with that. I think it’s nice when my faves hit goalposts, I usually go ‘oh nice!’ and then carry on with whatever I’m doing lol.

The joyful irony of it all is how fandom has become so focused on achievement of quick, one-time records but then bitch about the lack of longevity of songs on the American charts. The streaming efforts served a purpose 3-4 years ago under a Korean-promotional system but BTS has grown beyond those promotional tactics, which generally are not that influential in charting No. 1 in the US.

‘ it's more them living through other people's achievements than them being happy for BTS‘

Oh definitely! A good portion of these fans (Not saying all, so no one gets defensive) are compensating for something in their life and view these accomplishments as ‘theirs’ as well. They take their bias group’s accomplishments so personally.

I enjoy the music but none of these groups are paying my bills so it ultimately feels like a one way street, I’m not getting anything serious from this besides some fun entertainment so I’m not dedicating hours to them.

From: [identity profile] ohmylol.livejournal.com
Normally the ones who take those achievements as theirs are the ones who take that too seriously or who shame people for not streaming or who hate on other groups for the pettiest shit (like the armys who feel threatened by BP or the blinks who feel threatened by Twice, etc) they truly believe because they bought and streamed then that makes them superior and those achievements are theirs.

I also use kpop as escapism and fun entertainment and honestly with covid it had helped to pass the time , but besides buying the albums (that i can afford ) and watching the MV a few times and adding their songs to my spotify list, i'm not doing much, it's not a job, it's a hobbie and it shouldn't feel like a chore.

i think i watched it like 5 times lol. do YT views even count for anything other than fandom bragging rights? bc if they don't idk why ppl are so obsessed with them.

they count for charts i think, but the % isn't high, it's mostly for braggins rights, but lbr, all charts are all for bragging rights lmao.

good for them, i watched it once, liked the vibe but i couldn't with the vocals, sorry.

also it's getting annoying that everything is a competition now and everything is about bragging rights, the ammount of people i saw saying that they haven't slept for streaming, i even saw a woman saying that she made her kids and husband stream , like, come on, why can't people be normal??

Date: 2020-08-23 08:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dalpaengi.livejournal.com
and you just know she was VERY proud of the clout she got for making her kids and husband stream! She should have kept that to herself.

reminds me of this special needs teacher that bragged to me that she got her autistic teenagers to dance to BTS. “Hobi brought them out of their shell! Bts should be part of a curriculum for helping young autistic youth love themselves” ...she even had film of the kids that she showed me. Of course I reported her. This isn’t the only fandom I’ve seen with adult weirdos.

From: [identity profile] ohmylol.livejournal.com
oh yes, and all armys were "OMG, i want a mom like that 😍😍" and people from other fandoms were of course mocking her.

I have no problem with older people getting into kpop, being a fan of something doesn't have an expiration date, but there is a difference between being fan and a fanatic, OMG, you did right on report that person, wtf?? all fandoms tend to have weird people but bigger the fandom the crazy gets more noticeable, directioners had a lot of divorcees who were obsessed with Larry.

Date: 2020-08-23 08:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dalpaengi.livejournal.com

Yup! It’s big fandom and also the overall mentality of the fandom.

I’m an older fan myself so I have sympathy for what older fans go through with the teasing and mocking. I’m not too proud to admit I’ve done crazy fandom stuff too but after I realized the deep rooted emotional issues behind the fanaticism I sold a lot of my kpop stuff to invest in my future. Me spending 1k on Jonghyun’s LP because it’s so rare and he’s not with us is no different a mindset than army’s obsessive streaming.

Date: 2020-08-23 08:44 pm (UTC)

Same, i'm not going to mock someone over what they like, people believe that adults can't have hobbies , especially with women, they believe that you can't like things if you are over 25, so i completely get it and if BTS (and kpop groups in general) have a lot of 35+ fans who enjoy it, fantastic, but being too obsessive with it it's not a good thing-

I had to take a rest from twitter and overall fandoms because i was getting too obsessed with things i never cared about before, not on that extent but it was getting too much, so i took a break, did other stuff and now i'm in a way better place, hobbies should be fun and entertaining, not people stressing over useless stuff.

Omggggg it’s sad I know what you’re referring to

That’s another thing, before ontd/omona id get discourse or reviews on songs from their comment sections for music videos. Obviously shouting out your fave members was always a thing but people would discuss why they like it. That still happens (specifically nugu or smaller groups, as they never stood a chance in views anyways) - but for the big guys it’s outweighed by the comments focused specifically on streaming for views

I hate those comments with a burning passion lmao. I had no problem with them until they started cropping up EVERYWHERE and started getting hundreds of likes every single time. They’re literally just regurgitating something that happened or was said but in the same tired old format and I’m like???? Aren’t any you embarrassed to have zero originality? And why are the comments that actually talk about the content ignored??

Not surprised. I saw the post pop up on FB. I walked to the bathroom to get my toothbrush (brush teeth as I watch) and when I came back it had 4 millions views. Only 7 minutes had past since FB posted it.

Taehyung in that MV was everything for me! *O* He looked soooooooooooooo good! Bless his visuals! \o/

I think I watched the MV 3 times. The first time was to really take in the aesthetics and the last two was to really hear the song itself. It's great that they've broken this record and all, but it also puts more pressure on the fandom to continuously outdo themselves. Like...Doesn't that get exhausting? But then again, they just want the bragging rights so they probably don't care how taxing it is in the long run. BTS and BP clearly have the biggest fandoms in kpop right now with them constantly trying to outdo each other on the charts and with views. They've made this into one hell of a competition. Congrats to them either way. What is going to happen when they release drop the album itself in October? I guess they'll aim for breaking yet another record.

good for them ig lol
and tbh the music industry have always been a competition of numbers, there's just different platforms in each generation~ so i don't really care why fans stream, as long as it's not hurting anyone (aside from their fanwars with each other) and it's not like they're taking my time lol so you do you ig

also i wish a music video on the same level as run, spring day or bst got this much attention lol like maybe they should swap lumpens for someone else cause he seems to be running out of ideas

I guess I'm getting old because all this screaming about views is starting to reaaaally irritate me. I still need to understand why it is so freaking important. How is 100 mil better than, say, 80 mil in terms of smth that matters?

Anyway, I watched the MV 4 times because I really really liked it (and because Tae and Kookie are so handsome) but I use an unofficial Youtube app so I think that lame contribution of mine doesn't even count, lol

Imagine if they put out like....a PSA about coronavirus and staying safe and stuff. Would they get as many views. jokes.

I watched it once. And once was enough.

I have to agree I am not sure when the youtube views became so important. I am a middle aged woman that loves BTS. Having watched them grow since they debut to me this was a major accomplishment for ARMYS. I believe the Army were very focused to have this happened. I thought it was only 98.2 views until Youtube actually added on for once. Which is amazing in itself BTS usually loses views. I did play it throughout the day even though I was working, I played it at least 2 times every hour while working. One because I liked the song, and because I was working I would only see snippets of the video I think it took me until late that night to actually get to watch the whole thing and pay attention :)
I remember when On came out when I went to bed it was a big amount of views but when I woke up it was only half the views. So this time I think the Fandom tried to do their best not to lose as many views this time. I really don't do twitter or anything else like that so I was only going by the comments of what they were shooting for :)
