The 2019 VMA's nominations have been announced and there's a brand new Best K-Pop category.

Some say it's a great opportunity to give exposure to kpop by having its own category, most say it separates kpop groups (mainly BTS) so they don't compete with western bands and actually win. Additional to Best Kpop, BTS' Boy With Luv is nominated for Best Collaboration, Best Art Direction and Best Choreography.

VMA's will air next Monday (lol), August 26.

Omona, what do you think? Will any of them show up? Why is TXT there and not Twice? Who still cares about the VMAs?

the sexism in western coverage of kpop is getting so blatant. more and more bgs are being acknowledged while red velvet, twice and loona get paid dust.
i don't like that kpop is in a separate category either, but i can imagine how mad stans of western artists would be if their faves got beaten by bts.

i get the feeling that there will only be room for one major kpop group of each gender in the us scene, because unfortunately a lot of the public won't bother learning the difference btwn groups of asians

Mte. I think for a lot of casual American listeners there’s just BTS and Blackpink, they’re prob not here for the rest. Too many Asians for them lbr

yeah i don't get why they don't just include k-pop in the international category. red velvet and twice should definitely get more coverage and promotion. i mean they just toured in the US so why didn't they get to do the same press rounds as the boygroups? Loona also seems to be catching the attention of some Western pop singers and US pop fans especially LGBT fans. London Noise even tweeted them the other day about a studio session, so they should be getting more coverage in the US. If blockberry were smart they would do a lot of promo while they are in LA for KCON (magazines, interviews, etc) and then come back to the States for their solo showcase performances.

also i agree with you that it will probably only be one boygroup and girlgroup that will ever be mainstream in the US unfortunately. K-pop companies I think though are satisfied with just banking on the k-pop fandom that already exists here since the korean market is so oversaturated

This is bullshit and it's clear some of these artists were only included for online traffic.

I wonder how much they had to pay to get a nomination. And echoing everyone else, 1 girl group? Really?

It would make more sense to have a Boy Kpop and Girl Kpop categories. but I guess we get what we can get?

most of these groups are all signed to US labels. There aren't any other GGs singed to a US label other than BP if I remember correctly. Exo/SM has ties to disney who own MTV so that's how that happened.

From: [identity profile] dior-chic.livejournal.com
Yep. I think that’s the biggest deciding factor - they don’t care about kpop groups not working with US labels

precisely! the VMAs are generally major label influenced/bought and at this point its "who can we get to show up/bring in as much online noise with as possible"

personally I hope MX get it and show up in their full leather daddy looks

ah. connections. makes sense. They should specify that this is kpop in the US. not kpop, THE WHOLE DANG GENRE OF KOREAN POP.

I was trying to think if all of the ones included promoted at some point in the US (outside of fan concerts). Like Blackpink doing Coachella and BTS being freaking everywhere.

did not know EXO/SM has ties with Disney. Is there ANYTHING Disney doesn't have a hand in?

technically everyone on the list minus exo have released tracks for US radio/audiences specifically (that's why cat & dog is nominated

exo feels like a "lets not invoke the wrath/use exo-l's for social media hits" but maybe SM's planning on pushing exo-sc in the us? idk

I agree with everything but Disney does not own MTV, Viacom does. Viacom and Disney are competitors

Let’s be real, all the nominations outside of the category are also mainstream. They don’t really count views of achievements when it comes to nominations, a good example of that is Despacito lol. Award shows are always a joke in every country tbh

I haven't checked teh rest, award show ain't my thing
i wouuldn't even remember about teh VMA without this post XD, I fear I'm too much of an old lady I spend most days in books

I agree with this. Award shows have always been a popularity contest which makes sense. You can't vote for the best if you haven't heard of them. Top 40 everything is how it goes.

Not that I want to give MTV too much credence (though in my youth it was revolutionary) but the inclusion of cat & dog makes this lose all credibility. Cat & Dog makes mmmbop look mature. (nothing against the boys, I'm sure they'll grow up into something amazing.)

It is a focus on videos, though, and korea does some nice videos.

Date: 2019-07-24 08:31 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daynr.livejournal.com
how about it makes mmmmbop look visually mature?

you're right, the song itself wasn't the best comparison.

From: [identity profile] vintage-boom.livejournal.com
this would only make sense if it was strictly for music videos because even the slightly better than average kpop video wipes the floor with 90% of western MVs

but it's not so this is for clicks and clicks only

and also MX's song is 100% in english for an english speaking audience so it's inclusion here is especially ridiculous.

The more I think about it, the least surprised I am. Still pissed of course - there are so many amazing female artists, and even just looking at popularity, Twice and Red Velvet deserve to be there too - but was I really expecting better? sadly, no, I wasn't. At least Black Pink is there, I guess.

lol irl @ TXT getting a nom? they should thanks bts for it.

if it was actually representative of what's popular, at least TWICE should be in there.

are they segregating them to keep them from wining the pop categories?

Yep, especially considering that boy with luv has more sales/views than most if not all of the pop songs nominated (I'm too lazy to look up all the numbers rn but I know they're at least comparable with others in that category)

dead @ txt being nominated. theyre cute children but let’s not lie to ourselves here hsbdhd
also dead @ exo’s tempo being nominated lmfao

i know sm keeps trying to make nct happen and like i think theyre incredibly talented and they have great personalities so i won’t say anything about the nom.

i don’t know anything about monsta x except they got the big tiddies man so congrats to them!

tbh the only ones i think actually make sense are bts (obviously) and bp because their following in the US is massive. though i agree 100% with the rest of the comments: where the hell is TWICE? FANCY is the song of the year!

Nothing will top the 2000/2001 VMAs in terms of iconic status so IDK why they even still happen.
