they've been releasing a 'memories of 201x' dvd every year since 2015. there's a deluge of stuff now because the game was delayed for ages but they've always had lots of content
I see, is just that they have all these stuff coming out since the beginning of this year, albums, dvds, toys, its a lot lol, i don't know how fans can keep up.
it is a lot, but it probably feels like more than it used to because they're one of the biggest acts in the world now and everything they do and release gets more attention than it would before.
IDK, releasing 3 DVDs from the same tour in a span of 3 months or so seems like a lot, lol! It will be interesting to see how long they can keep up before exhausting the consumers.
Y'all seem to still be thinking of BTS as the small group with a few thousand fans trying to get their first win. They have millions of fans across the globe, dedicated and casual. Something like this is more geared towards the dedicated (and the core fandom of bts is huge in and of itself), but other stuff will hit a much wider audience. There are people buying BT21 merch now who don't know it's related to BTS, like the hypebeasts who bought up the antisocialsocialclub x BT21 collab hoodies and shirts.
There are a lot of different products available and that gives something for everyone. Some will get concert tickets, some will buy tour DVDs since they missed out on concerts (because it was sold put or because there wasn't a show in their country), some won't care enough to go out to a show or buy a physical copy of a DVD and the film of the tour in cinemas works for them. Many people actually use the films to show friends and family members what they love about BTS. Some won't spend any money on music (the state of the industry in 2019) but might get a tshirt or cushion or something with a cute character.
I'm not being defensive, I'm telling you what kind of mindset your comments are reminiscent of. The point is that you're underestimating how just mainstream they are. It's not just dyed in the wool armys who'll buy their products now
Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. Its pretty standard for the biggest group to release tons of merch, but Big Hit its really milking it with all those toys and random stuff. Even with the DVDs, it's pretty wild IMO, releasing the same tour in 3 different cities, its kind of overkill. I don't know how sustainable would be for the fanbase, and overexposure can be detrimental. (I am talking about the merchandising aspect, not the group itself when I am talking about overexposure).
