BTS Rises To New Heights On Billboard’s Hot 100 As “Boy With Luv” Featuring Halsey Takes No. 8

BTS’s “Boy With Luv” has debuted at the group’s highest ranking yet on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart!

On April 22 local time, Billboard announced that BTS’s title track “Boy With Luv” featuring Halsey off their new mini album “Map of the Soul: Persona” debuted on the Hot 100 chart at No. 8.

The group first entered the top 10 of the Hot 100 chart when “Fake Love” debuted at No. 10 last spring.

“Boy With Luv” is now the highest charting song by a Korean group on the Hot 100, and BTS is the first Korean group to earn multiple Hot 100 top 10 songs. They are also the second Korean artist overall, after PSY reached No. 2 with “Gangnam Style” in 2012 and No. 5 with “Gentleman” in 2013.

The track takes No. 5 on the Streaming Songs chart with 29.9 million U.S. streams, which is the group’s best ranking on the chart (they previously reached a peak of No. 7 with “Fake Love”). It’s the best streaming week ever for a Korean artist!

“Boy With Luv” is also at No. 3 on the Digital Song Sales chart (with 31,000 in sales), and this is BTS’s fourth time in the top 10 of the chart. The track hit 9.7 million in radio reach and it rises from No. 35 to No. 29 on the Pop Songs chart.

It was recently announced that BTS’s “Map of the Soul: Persona” has taken No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart this week, which ranks the most popular albums in the United States. They are now the first Korean artist to top the chart three times, and also the first traditional music group since the Beatles to take No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with three different albums in less than a year.

Billboard’s full charts for this week will be updated on April 23.

Congratulations to BTS!

1. Congrats to them, this is great! Also Forbes tells me that all of their songs from Persona are in the TOP 40 list, altho only BWL ft. H is in the top 10.

2. Haven't we all been having issues with LJ since P*tin bought it in 2007?

honestly i have no idea which chart forbes are talking about because you're 10000% correct there're too many charts for me to even try and differentiate between them at this point anymore. So I just.... roll with it and accept all rankings everywhere??

Does this mean it will likely start playing on US radio (because to me that means they made it)? I don't listen to those radio stations but I might have to tune in just for a chance to hear them on the radio!

it’s getting spins on radio already, but the hot 100 and pop radio are separate entities so positioning on the chart doesn’t necessarily influence how many spins it’ll get. radio is like 75% payola these days, songs really need deals made by the record company to gain good traction there.

yeah exactly, some people just have better radio deals than others lol. but as soon as iheartradio bought the bulk of radio stations across the country that really eliminated any sort of fairness or “organic” radio play.

right and that formulaic mess is part of the reason why no one listens in the first place. you can hear the same song twice if not three times within an hour of traveling because it has a required number of spins on iheart’s playlist. and yeah if you’re not on today’s top hits spotify playlist and you’re not a streaming monster artist then good luck!

Really interesting to know. I always hate that my Spotify playlists have like 300 songs but I hear the same 20 or so over and over and over again. I end up wasting all my skips to get past the repeats. For regular radio, I listen to a rock station which is owned by I Heart and it does get repetitive with music and sometimes it's not even rock music they have on repeat (which I REALLY don't understand considering the station but whatever).

Interesting. How did old town road get so popular then? I feel like a lot of people were discovering it on their own even without the whole billboard controversy. Was that just an exception?

old town road is an exception to this rule and one of the results of the twitter/meme culture we currently find ourselves in. lil nas x wrote that song last year and posted it on soundcloud then started posting it on twitter attached to different memes which then started the yee haw challenge. the song didn’t even have an official release and it became so popular online that radio djs were ripping it from soundcloud to play it. then the rest is history.

that is def not the norm though, I mean there are countless artists out there posting their music to soundcloud who likely won’t be discovered. however the rise of the “soundcloud” rapper generation is only going to embolden and encourage more artists to go that route in hopes of making it that way without major label support.

another example of meme culture making a song skyrocket — the mannequin challenge and black beatles by rae sremmurd. the challenge made that song super popular and mainstream, because though rae sremmurd had hits on urban radio/charts before they didn’t have top 40 radio support. black beatles became their first #1.

this is interesting. thanks for the info. it seems like this will lead to more music though that's specifically created to be used in memes but at the same time maybe it will lead to more genre defying songs. that would be great to see

They’ve already started playing it way more this time than they ddi any of their previous songs since columbia actually sent the song in to stations. I think it was like over 800 plays in the first weekend compared to their past songs only getting like 100-200 plays in the first week. They cut out the raps though most of the time lmao just like they do with a lot of pop songs here too

Congrats to them! but hopefully the song doesn’t drop off like 40-50 spots next week. They might be topping the charts first week but really relevant acts stay at the top 10, 20 for many weeks in a row

Also lol@ at people saying dionysus should have been the single. Bwl is as radio-friendly as it gets. The only other song i could see them use is make it right but that’s basically an ed-sheeran song with bts vocals so i guess they did kind if want to differentiate themselves from him
