According to a new report, both Kim Soo Hyun and 2PM’s Taecyeon received early promotions during their military service for their exceptional conduct.

On March 4, Korean news outlet Herald Pop reported that the two stars had both been promoted to sergeant earlier than is typical for Korean soldiers. Candidates for early promotion to sergeant are determined based on outstanding performance and good conduct, and the number of recipients is capped at 10 percent of candidates.

Taecyeon, who was officially promoted to sergeant on February 1, is currently serving as a military instruction assistant at the 9th Armed Forces Division in Gyeonggi Province. The 2PM member previously drew attention for voluntarily giving up his U.S. green card and choosing to undergo herniated disk surgery in order to serve as an active-duty soldier instead of a public service worker, even though the military initially deemed him unfit to serve active-duty because of his physical condition.

Actor Kim Soo Hyun, who is currently serving in the first Reconnaissance Battalion and has reportedly been promoted to sergeant early as well, similarly went out of his way to serve as an active-duty soldier. Due to a heart condition for which he has received surgery in the past, Kim Soo Hyun was originally assigned to public service duty after his physical examination by the military. However, after the actor requested to be re-examined, he was eventually able to serve active-duty.

Early promotion to sergeant does not affect the length of a soldier’s military service, and both stars will be discharged according to schedule. Taecyeon will be discharged on May 16 of this year, while Kim Soo Hyun will be discharged on July 1.

Congratulations to both Kim Soo Hyun and Taecyeon!

I'm sorry, but being promoted in the army for conduct is not a merit, just kiss assing

Yes, but it's highlighted conduct (in title and first paragraph).
There are 2 ways to get promoted in the army 1. doing the things they tell you really well (performance) 2. say sir, yes, sir. You want a coffee with that, sir? (conduct).
The people who wrote the article know this and chose to put conduct in the title, so don't blame me for that.

Of course it says that, that's how it's supposed to work, but reality is different. This article is aimed to koreans, who know (or should know) how the army works, so it's a troll article and I'm pointing that out.
And if I'm reading it wrong and they didn't mean it that way, well, congratulations to both!

Good for them I guess, but I wish media finally stop with that Taecyeon give up green card to service, he didn't give up anything, green card doesn't exempt from service. And I am uncomfortable with intl. fans hyping celebrities over military service.

I get the politics but I just don't like when some use it for stan wank like they have any idea what they talk about. Already there are posts like that.

I was under the impression that it was always brought up because Taecyeon could have used it as a way to gain American citizenship, and then get out of army service. Was that wrong?

Well yes, but if he decided that he will no longer live and work in Korea, because to do so, he would need to show 5 yrs period of continuously residency in USA, which he didn't have at that time since he worked in Korea since 2008, plus keeping green card require to maintain permanent residency in USA, (i.e. returning at least every six month, otherwise your status could be questioned by official and person could lose green card), with army service of 18 month he would lost his US residency anyway, giving it up before made for great media play about his "dedication".

He had residency before working in Korea, and he used to return to the States to maintain it, but he stopped doing that in 2010. It's great for media play, but idk, I guess I also don't really see the problem with that. Back then, netizens hated him. He kind of needed it.

People shouldn't twist the green card thing into something it's not, though.

i would've been promoted early too if I had served in the military but unfortunately i had completely legitimate bone spurs. :(
