Greek TV Show Host Apologizes For Making Negative Comments Towards Male K-Pop Idols

After making negative comments about BTS, EXO, and Wanna One members on a Greek television show, host Katerina Kainourgiou has issued an official apology.

Previously, Katerina Kainourgiou and other panelists for the television program “Eutixeite” held a segment about TC Candler’s list of “The Most Handsome Faces of 2018.” The list includes BTS’s Jungkook and V and No. 2 and No. 5, respectively, as well as Wanna One’s Kang Daniel at 11th place and EXO’s Sehun at No. 15.

As Katerina Kainourgiou and the other panelists introduced Sehun, they made comments such as, “[He] dyed his hair red, but it looks awful. I don’t like it. That’s a waste of the ranking.” In regards to Kang Daniel, remarks such as “That’s a woman” and “Is that a man? Is he gay?” were made.

The hosts continued with such observations as they also called V a woman and remarked, “People have bad eyes.” Regarding Jungkook, they declared, “He looks like the other Korean idols. Korean men are ugly. Where are the men that look like these idols. I’ve never seen them.”

After receiving criticism for what fans deemed xenophobic and sexist statements, Katerina Kainourgiou made an official apology through her Instagram. She apologized to fans of the idols for her comments, and stated that the show would make “a tribute to their artistic sides” on Monday.

I'm gonna say first that I don't think I'll watch the video, and comment just based off the article.

TC Candler's list is definitely not the list to follow, since it's only 1(?) person making the ranking usually. and many times it's more of pandering to fans if I'm not wrong (haven't been following his list since many years ago)

and then off to the triggering part. as an Asian male, I think it's quite tiring to always be seen as feminine, and "ugly". i'm sorry that our genetic mix is not to your liking and ideal masculinity.

I'd feel bad for her/them for getting threatening messages but also....I saw that video and honestly they deserve the backlash. They literally called one of them a "thing", they pointed out "Asian facial structures" as a negative point as to how someone didn't deserve to be on the list, they somehow managed to be racist, homophobic, sexist and every other awful thing to be in one go.

Actually, they are already kinda irrelevant here in Greece. Her show is on one of thrashiest, if not the trashiest channels on TV, which not many people watch. So this means, I don't even know if they'll get fired. They should, but idk if it will actually happen.

However, if you're going to be racist, xenophobic and sexist, then you deserve to receive the same kind of negativity you dished out. Ugh, I've been both angry and embarrassed since the moment I saw this. The first time kpop is mentioned in the same sentence with Greece and it's for something so negative.

I'm glad they got called out, but I doubt they have and will learn what they said was fucked up. The apology was the typical 'sorry you got offended' without actually addressing the real issue. And their tribute to BTS? Fucking please. And the fact they didn't even acknowledge the members of the other two groups they insulted says a lot. Just a simple damage control, without actually caring. Although, what would you expect for those who managed to include racism, xenophobia, homophobia AND transphobia in few sentences.

I hope they get fired and/or sued, but, since the show is on a trash channel of the Greek TV, which not many people watch, I don't think they will be serious repercussions.

I'm also all for defending those who have been insulted/attacked, but for the love of God, don't stoop to the level of those you're addressing by telling them to die/kts/etc, even if you have a lot of anger and really want to swear at them. Be the bigger person.
And for fuck's sake, DON'T MOCK GREECE. I have read so many insulting comments about Greece's bankruptcy and some other nasty things. It's both annoying and heartbreaking.
