I hope he gets well soon.

I remember the same thing (or something similar) happened during the Burn the Stage documentary. It may be something he should seriously get checked out if it keeps happening.

This should not be surprising, considering that their schedules have been super packed this year. Yet I find myself a little surprised, bc they always seemed like a group with so much stamina, since back then too. I hope he’s recovering well. He should be staying back and resting up, he’s got no business dancing rn.

I was :(((( seeing only six of them for the recording of the Graham Norton Show tho ngl. He’s a good host, would’ve liked all of them to meet him.

their fans are going fucking mental on twitter about some perceived slight against this guy by graham; it's incredibly entertaining. they really do themselves no favours by acting so incredibly batshit all the time.

hope he gets better soon tho! it sucks that this should happen before something that could bring them so much exposure.

poor Jimin, and this has been happening before, I hope they get this properly checked out and healed before it becomes a chronic issue.

I hope he gets better soon and that he isn’t beating himself up over not being able to join the others on GN.

If I can be selfish for a minute - I went to both London dates and the Graham Norton recording and I am beyond sad that I still haven’t seen an all-member performance lol. They seemed particularly tired/down last night (GN). I’m also going to Amsterdam, Berlin and Paris and I’m trying to resign myself to the fact that I’m not going to get a show with seven of them performing. I don’t know how long stitches in the heel of your foot take to heal, but I can’t imagine it’ll be before the end of the Europe leg.

I’m grateful I’m seeing them, I’m sorry they’re injured and exhausted, but damn this is not what I imagined for their first tour in Europe. 😔

(I’m breaking this up into two comments because lj is shouting at me for being too wordy.)

Graham Norton was good, maybe a little awkward.

As soon as I walked in I had a bad feeling because there were chairs on the performance stage, and only six of them. I thought it’d be JK missing, so when I got the twitter notification about Jimin, midway through the filming of the interview with the other celebs, I was shocked.

Anyway, they came out in their hanboks and all sat in the chairs. They had loads of dancers, and only a few were their regular dancers so I’m assuming the rest were locals they got specifically for this. They started the song sitting down and then as their choreo parts came up some of them stood up and did their parts, and eventually all of them were standing, including Jungkook, though it was Idol choreo-lite. They obviously did their best, but it was still a bit strange. Maybe it will look better on camera than it does in my memory, or maybe it only felt weird to me because I know what the performance normally looks like, and non-fan viewers won’t notice.

After they performed they went over to the couch. They didn’t know where to sit at first because there was only a corner of the couch left, but they eventually figured it out and V, Suga and Jin sat on stools behind the couch. The interview was a little stilted. There was definitely something lost in translation (they didn’t have translators, in-ears or otherwise) and sense of humour. Graham got JK’s name wrong, which was awkward, but JK correcting him was cute. Graham asked them to introduce themselves, and Namjoon said, ‘All together or individually?’ or something like that and Graham was like ‘obviously not all at once’. So they each introduced themselves. When it was Jin’s turn he stood up and walked forwards, had a struggle moment of finding the right camera, then blew a kiss, did the worldwide handsome bit, etc. It was also a bit cringey, but honestly it was needed. He broke the awkwardness and even non-fans in the audience laughed.

Namjoon did most of the speaking. Again, I think the sense of humour went over his head. I don’t know how to explain it really. Maybe it was the sarcasm? I also wonder if they expected something more like the American shows - really OTT friendly and personable. I like GN as a host a lot, so I’m not implying anything - obviously that’s just not what his show is like!

Some of the others had memorised a few things to say. Jungkook talked about his stitches. GN made a joke about Jimin being injured, which I see fans are losing their shit over on Twitter. GN asked what BTS stands for - he didn’t seem to get it when Namjoon was explaining Beyond the Scene/Bangtan Sonyeondan. They talked about the London gigs, the UN speech, their global fan base. GN asked where they’re headed next, and it was clear that this part was meant to be answered by Taehyung but he hesitated for a split second and a fan from the audience screamed out the answer for him, which I felt kind of bad about. It had a weird vibe.

When they were talking about the UN speech and the love/speak yourself concept, Whoopi Goldberg said something about how they’re bringing so much positivity to everyone and she loves it, so she said she would give them the shirt off her back lol. She started unbuttoning her shirt (she had something on undearneath ofc) and Graham and Harry Connick Jr. started helping her with the buttons. BTS looked so confused, it was pretty funny. She handed them the shirt and JK held it up proudly with the biggest smile, it was so so cute. I’m laughing at just the memory of it.

Next they filmed the red chair segment. Even I struggled to understand everyone speaking (I’m American) because of accents. Namjoon kept leaning forward - I think he couldn’t understand much either. When Graham flipped the chair they all looked shocked af. I remember Hoseok turned around to someone behind him (Jin? Yoongi?) with a ‘wtf just happened’ look. Towards the end Jin was OTT laughing and clapping, as if he could understand and found it hilarious lmao.

So the interview ended and they turned to hand their mics to the staff. Jin and Yoongi kept bowing over and over, they were so polite. Also they all shook hands and bowed to the other guests. One of their staff members came out so she could translate between them and a GN staff member. The GN staff was relaying that they had to film a promo bit. They came and stood right in front of us with Graham and filmed the commercial part. It was cool to see them that close up.

There were so few fans in the studio. I know it’s difficult to get tickets, but I really was shocked at how few of us there were! There was a very small group of us in each section (the audience is split into three sections). They made sure to look at every one of us and wave, say thanks, etc. The non-fans around us were absolutely terrible. So rude about their English, accents, performance etc. I don’t even want to repeat the things I heard around me.

I feel like I was pretty negative overall in my description, and I don’t think it will appear that bad on TV, but I’ve been to a lot of GN recordings and so I guess I just had really high expectations. They all seemed tired or maybe just off because of Jimin/JK, or a combination, I’m not sure. It’s clear they tried their best, though, and it’s not their fault that there were language/cultural barriers. Overall they were adorable, and made the best of a strange situation.

Sorry this was so long!

sorry to butt in but thank you for the detailed report lol.

i feel bad for them :( but well it can't be helped. i don't care if other ppl dislike them, i just hope the boys didn't feel it. (also ppl keep saying fans were losing their shit over the jimin joke but i literally didn't see anyone mentioning it on my tl?? (which makes sense bc i went on an unfollow spree a few days ago, and it's truly paying off lmao))

i didn't like fallon as a host, but i was glad the boys felt at ease with him, i wish it was like that everywhere they went. i feel bad especially for namjoon because he was probably the most frustrated, his lack of fluency is really obvious in these circumstances imo.

Ugh I really need to unfollow a bunch of people. I’m struggling to find a balance between following the right people who will give me good timely updates but not get involved in drama.

I felt bad for them too tbh. Also I feel some weird sense of guilt, because there were so few of us that the fan chants during Idol were inaudible. I think we were all unsure if it was appropriate to do them or not, and then we collectively decided it was the least we could do because there weren’t many of us, but there was no way all of us could be loud enough to be heard over the music.

Agree about Fallon - not a fan, but it was clear they all felt comfortable and had fun. Also agree about Namjoon. People really overestimate his fluency. He’s leaps and bounds above the others with his level of English, but I wouldn’t consider him fluent.

I hope they don’t have a completely negative view of London/the UK now. 😔 Everything seemed to go wrong while they were here.

Soo choi and agirlinthepark are the best for timely update imo and only occasionally talk about drama, soo choi is also delulu lol but it only shows when there's talk about dating.

Aw :( well it's still better than nothing, if there was a chance they might have been able to hear it then it's worth going all out lol

I wouldn't consider him fluent either, like i don't consider myself fluent but i think my level is still slightly above his. I think namjoon is quick witted and that's why he can do conversations well but there's more to it to be fully fluent.

Ohh don't worry about that it looks like they really enjoyed london! Also the previous interviews looked like they went pretty well and namjoon tweeted a Pokémon in the middle of the night so it can't have been that bad lmao.

aw man, reading this makes me feel bad about their situation :(. i usually have the impression that americans were hella racist, but so far during this tour the british have really shown their asses, what with the articles published before, and now this.

this makes me actually disappointed with graham norton + his production team, and kind of exposes his limitations as a host tbh. like, how the fuck did you not lock or prepare larger slots for fans? idk if that was possible but, c'mon, seriously.

ngl, this is kind of what i was expecting when it was announced when they were going on. i really didnt think they'd have the language skills to get through it smoothly, due to accents, the types of questions that get asked, etc. maybe it'll turn out better on screen with some editing/camera cuts etc

Thank you for the detailed report, really curious to see what the show will be like (and sorry you didn't get to see them all perform together, anyone would be disappointed and it sucks that it turned out that way :(). Funny how they went from meeting Iris Stevenson to Whoopi!

Really annoyed to hear they're still sending them out on stage without a translator though, I mean even just as a backup...they're exhausted at this point and it's hard enough to communicate in another language when you're fully present already. It's so shitty that they keep throwing them in the deep end like this when they should be learning on their downtime, not while they're being put on the spot in front of hundreds of people, it's really not okay.

mte with your last paragraph, it's beyond embarrassing at this point. they're working namjoon to the fucking bone when he's in way above his skill level. it's so sad to see

I saw the Graham Norton interview and he was struggling so much trying to put something into words at one point that you can see him starting to panic. He totally had that annoying second language thing going on where you know exactly what you want to say in your head but it comes out in gibberish because speaking is just hard and it was so painful to watch because (and he knows) non-fans might make fun of him or think he's stupid/bad at English when he's not. I don't get why they can't let him breathe a little, they're all making progress in English and RM has done great for being self-taught and instead of rewarding and helping them learn they're forcing them to feel embarrassed about it on national TV because they're not speaking at a native level.

It's hard bringing it up because it looks like a dig at the guys and their English but we all know how most people will mock and humiliate a floundering non-native English speaker (when it's great that they're trying!). Some of us have been put in that position ourselves and know how it feels so the fact that Big Hit are doing this to them on purpose is the worst.

mte. i truly don't understand why bighit is being so stubborn when it comes to this. lord knows that they have the funds to be able to hire an interpreter, based on the money they bring in it's barely a drop in the ocean. what do they think they're winning by doing this? america explain

Date: 2018-10-14 11:35 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nekobot.livejournal.com
Even worse, I don't think they're not hiring an interpreter, they must already have one and just refuse to use them for the guys themselves! I mean they're on tour now - who is negotiating with the venue? Who is communicating rider demands? Communicating with their PR? Checking over forms? Helping the staff that don't speak English when they need it? Are they just sending out Namjoon every time someone needs to make a food order?

Maybe they're too cheap to hire two interpreters and the one they have is already working overtime.

Date: 2018-10-12 01:23 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rainstormraider.livejournal.com
I do not get why they don’t have interpreters all the tine. It’s not hard. We have simultaneous interpretation in our meetings at all times because they are conducted in 3 languages. BTS’s team are incredible unprofessional for continuing this mess. They just need in-ears and some Listen equipment. This isn’t hard.

their schedule since the tour started is something else, bighit first said they would concentrate on the tour without promoting but this flew out the window the day they got the love call from agt :/
they'll be in amsterdam tonight and in paris tomorrow, then berlin, then back to paris in the span of a few days... it's way too much, especially because touring is both energetically and mentally draining.

i hope jimin recovers fully before he performs again but i doubt it :( i hope they get good vibes at the concerts and don't burn out.

I think their actual words were that they weren't taking interview requests, and indeed the promotions in the U.S. this time lacked the extended press run of last year. Shows like agt, fallon and gma were great for exposure and required relatively less time and effort. There weren't really any small fish stuff in the U.S. that they should've turned down.

Yikes...I'm worried they're not giving them proper treatment and checkups, didn't the same thing happen to Jin where they made him perform with a busted neck even thought he wasn't in any state to do so and he was cringing on stage because of it? Big Hit are doing a fine job of becoming SM's follow-up like this, their schedule is way too intense and it's worrying to think what the other guys might be dealing with that they're just expected to power through (especially now that the pressure is high and they can't really afford to have more members sit out their performances).
