Andy Prepares For Military

Andy (28) of Shinhwa and “We Got Married” will be enlisting in the military on January 11th. In preparation, Andy will have a fan meeting and release a digital single.

Eric, Kim Dong-wan, and Junjin have already enlisted, but Andy, Shinhwa’s mangnae (youngest member) will be the first of Shinhwa to serve active duty. Andy gave up his American citizenship in 2003, and is required to serve in Korea’s military for about 2 years.

On January 11th, Andy will head off to 6 months of basic training at Nonsan Military Training Center and then enter active duty.

Before that, Andy will have a fan meeting “ANDY Farewell Party Bye For Now” on January 9th, in Sungdong-gu at Sowol Art Hall. Andy will also release a digital single “One Love” (사랑 하나) on the day of his enlistment, January 11th.

Fellow member Minwoo, will also be enlisting this year, after putting off military service for about 2 years already. Minwoo was scheduled to have his last concert before enlistment on January 16th and 17th, but after a serious car accident, Minwoo injured his neck, back, and ankles, and is currently recovering.

The final member of Shinhwa, Shin Hye-sung, will not be serving in the military, due to a previous injury.

how does one go about "giving up" american citizenship anyway? it seems like a big task :| I'm genuinely curious.

voluntarily, you do one of five things: be naturalized in another country, take an oath/pledge to another country, serve in another country's military, accept employment in another country's government, or formally renounce US citizenship with a US consulate officer as your witness. it's pretty easy, actually, because the US doesn't recognize dual citizenship, so if you're an American citizen, that's all you are. the confusing part is that most other countries do recognize dual citizenship, so it's more a matter of where lines are crossed, etc. like, you can be born somewhere else, immigrate to the US, be naturalized (and therefore renounce citizenship in your birth country), then go back to your native country and re-register as a citizen and there's no issues with that because America's first on your, "countries i am a citizen of" list. but if you want to become a citizen of another country via naturalization, it basically means, "hey, US, you kind of suck, i'm moving here, k," and you have to give up American citizenship in order to do that.

idk i know that it seems REALLY SIMILAR but there's tiny nuances that make it a can/can't, i guess. :3 i hope this helped?

i'm pretty sure brian's still an american citizen, because he comes here a lot for both family and work, and i can't imagine him giving it up because it makes coming in and out of the US SO MUCH EASIER. but as for everyone else, i have no idea. ):

I suppose we can say the same for Daniel Henney since he **did** have a US drama... Plus, I've never seen those three bring up the subject of doing the mandatory military service. Add Tablo too?

OH THAT'S TRUE. i've heard nothing about tablo and brian doing the military thing, so then yeah, they're probably still american citizens. and i'm pretty sure daniel, too.

I think you're required to spend atleast 6 months a year in the US in order to stay a citizen? idk I just remember some singer had to give up his citizenship because it was too hard to maintain it. It might have been Brian?
