Andy will enlist on Jan 11th

Shinhwa's Andy will be entering active military service on January 11, 2009 2010.

Andy will enter the Choongnam Army Training Facility at 1pm on the 11th, where he will go through basic training, and then leave to fulfill his military obligations for two years.

According to Andy's representative, "Although he is entering the miliatry on the 11th, he had a very busy schedule, which included holding concerts, including his Asia Tour. He is spending the beginning of the year taking care of personal matters before he enters the military."

In 2003, Andy gave up his green card in the U.S. to be a celebrity in Korea, including Shinhwa activities. Among Shinhwa members, Andy will be on the only one entering active military service.

Upon hearing the news that he will be entering active military service, his fans have been expressing their sadness. His fans have expressed their sadness while sending their support by saying, "Andy oppa, it's going to be difficult for you to enter the military when it's cold," "He's going to active military service, that's admirable," and "Will be able to see him after two years?".

**Koreans differentiate between Active and Non-active military service. The only difference is that in Active military service, they have to live in military dorms on base, while non-active members (Eric, DW, JunJin) get to go home everyday (think of it as equal to working a 9-5 job).

Slowly our time of having a reunited Shinhwa again is drawing closer ^^ And although we say goodbye to Andy this year, we get Eric back in just a few months, and Dongwan around November!

I'm wondering what Minwoo's accident means for this though. Once he's recovered, will he be exempt from it like Hyesung was because of his knee? But Eric's back injury didn't exempt him from service ... so I wonder.

So I think we are maybe two or three years away from it, it depends how long Minwoo needs to recover, and what his injuries have meant.

I think it's highly possible that Minwoo will be exempted 'cos his injuries sound really serious (IDC what you say about having no need to worry, Dongwan).

Hyesung's knee gives him problems often. Even when walking his knee would hurt sometimes. Eric's back probably isn't that serious, like mine. Only when over strained that it would hurt. Plus, his duty's almost like an office job, and he gets to go home every day, so he's fine.

I really hope Minwoo would be fine...

Eric's back is quite serious. He had to wear a support brace during their concerts, and after their 10th anniversary ones he was in a lot of pain, at one point he needed help to even walk to his car. Even during drama filming his back has given him issues.

This is why I'm not sure what does and does not exempt you from military service. Hyesung seems to have a lot less issues with his knee than Eric has with his back, yet Hyesung doesn't have to do military service but Eric does. Maybe Eric also had the option of not going, but decided that he should? Who knows!

I hope Minwoo will be fine too. I'm sure soon enough we'll hear more news. I kind of like that there isn't any, it's better to have no news and then hear something concrete, than it is to hear lots of useless rumours and half-news. In the end, this gives us less worry.

You still do the six weeks of basic, it's just that after that you're placed in public service positions - like security, subways, etc. You're still "serving your country" so I don't think there's any dishonour or something about it.

Honestly if the option is there, I don't blame them for chosing it.

(and if Dongwan had done active service, he might have died from withdrawal from his blog, his camera, and his movie reviews ... XD)

Surprised he's going to active military service, but does that mean he's getting off earlier? (That's what we do in Finland, you can take the soldier training OR you can do a civil servant job for a longer time.)

I don't think you can leave earlier if you take active service. I think it's 2 years either way, unfortunately.

What I understand is that only some who apply for non-active duty get accepted for it like you have to have some serious physical problem.

Not so sure that this is accurate - if it is, then it may only apply to civilians, and celebrities simply get it without question. Dongwan has no physical problems that I know of, and he's non-active. Many other celebs who have gone in recent years have also done non-active, and as far I know they also had no physical problems.

Aww Andy! I'll miss him but at least that means we're one step closer to a permanent reunion. I can't wait for Eric/DW/JJ to come back <3 and I can't wait for Minwoo to get better so he can go if he doesn't get exempt ^^;;
