j-hope of K-Pop Sensation BTS Has His Own Story to Tell on New Solo Mixtape

Allow j-hope to introduce himself — and to welcome us to Hope World, the K-pop superstar’s debut solo mixtape. J-hope, 24, born Jung Ho-seok, is one of seven members of BTS, one of the most popular boy bands in the world. But the release of his independent project doesn’t spell any kind of end of the BTS reign. In fact, he is the third member of the group to put out an individual mixtape, giving their army of global fans a taste of his own artistic vision — without fracturing the boy band unity.

“The team always comes first, so I focused on our projects as BTS and tried to make time in the hotel room, on the airplane, and whenever I could find a few minutes,” he says of the two-year-long process of developing Hope World, which he considers “my calling card to the world.”

Best known in BTS for his rapping and his background as a former competitive street dancer, the young star was discovered by BigHit Entertainment’s founder and CEO Bang Si-hyuk thanks to his sharp moves. On Hope World, he gets to flex his own voice, crafting a set of songs that fans of rap and pop can enjoy even if they don’t speak a word of Korean. The mixtape opens with an adventure inspired by Jules-Verne, then delves into his personal reflections on fame and success, anthems for positivity and party tracks, all layered over a mix of instantly catchy trap, dance and tropical beats. Here, j-hope shares exclusively with TIME the stories behind this collection of solo tracks, whose messages — despite the language difference — certainly don’t get lost in translation.

i'm same with the airplane's group vocals and it's true that it makes the song more heartfelt and you can hear yoongi's ott hollering so well too 😭 no wonder they cut him out of fire

the mixtape has been on repeat ever since it came out. i’m so happy that he put these tracks out. he really plays around with his flow and range and it’s amazing to listen to. AND THE INSTRUMENTALS for some of these songs... they aren’t generic and i keep hearing new sounds every single time i listen to it. i’d really love to have the instrumentals of the songs. my ears are so pleased 🙌🏾💖 my faves are definitely p.o.p. and airplane (daydream and blue side i’m also loving more and more)

i always choose not to pick a fave member in bangtan but hope world definitely settled it for me and i can't deny it anymore, hoseok is my fave :( honestly i listened to his mixtape with no expectation and i came to love it so much, he truly has great music taste.
like: I drew inspiration for this mixtape from artists like KYLE and Aminé. I also have to mention the heavy influence of Joey Bada$$. These are all artists I highly respect, and I’d love to do projects with them in the future.
omg?????? i am so glad he mentioned these guys instead of some greasy white rappers, i mean i love all three, but Kyle and Joey are a++++ and i looked it up and apparently they're all around his age and i think it's great he gets inspiration from guys like that.

his whole vlive made me soft, he looked so emotional and almost choked up at some moments? and looked so happy when he reads comments supporting him. also bangtan's members passion for music is one of the greatest thing about them and i'm glad that they have this greediness to get better and strive to do more instead of just being satisfied with their current self. anyway i love hope world, and it made me even more excited for what's to come for bangtan!

the more I listen to it, the more I like it. POP wasn't my favourite but I think that's probably the most well-rounded track on there. the production is great.
