[identity profile] goshipgurl.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] omonatheydid
Hits 93 Toronto, which claims to be “Canada’s Most Followed Radio Station”, recently wanted to dedicate an hour of their broadcast to K-pop. Sounds like a rather innocuous idea, right? Well, apparently not.

"I'd like to comment on the Tweet posted yesterday regarding us playing K-POP once a day for an hour. When I posted the Tweet, I did not intend to offend. In fact, I intended to help promote bigger acts and smaller acts from Korea and beyond, during that K-POP hour. However, after careful consideration, I have come to the conclusion that it wouldn't be wise to continue plans for a K-POP hour considering the outpouring of opinions on this matter. I and the team at Hits 93 Toronto, understand (and appreciate), the comments sent to us. As such, we have decided to yield your warnings, and pull the plug on this week's 'Where Did It Chart' and the K-POP hour. I did not mean to offend nor attack any opinions on this and have since removed this week's 'Where Did It Chart' from our site and have opted to remove any K-POP songs from the playlist — as per your suggestions. I sincerely apologize for the turmoil my Tweet caused! - Viktor and the team at Hits 93 Toronto"

The account appears to have deleted earlier tweets, but the replies to this APOLOGY to K-pop fans for wanting to create a K-pop hour tell me that it has to do with BTS fans not wanting EXO (and the rest of K-pop) to ride on their coattails or something like that. So once again, that dumbass fanwar shows its ass.

The weirdest part is seeing BTS fans be proud of doing this or something.

Bonus: Netizen Army comments

[+1, -0] We've poured our sweat blood and tears into giving bts the recognition they deserve. What did we get from the kpop community? We got rediculed you all shunned us for "begging for western validation". You all tossed around our achievments "y'all wish you had a bbma? Nah thanks I'd rather...". But now we get the reward that we earned and you want a piece of the price? Go work for it. Go fucking earn it instead of hopping on our dicks. You all told us we're not part of the kpop community, but now you want us around? Instead go get your group the recognition they deserve. P.s. this has nothing to do with exo or exols. We don't want ANYONE to ride on our hardwork.

[+0, -0] First of all, the kpop community called us beggars for "western recognition", mocking us as always. Now that we have finally opened our way in America, everyone wants to join and use our hard work to have an easy life and try stealing what we have accomplished in months. Y'all can't just think that only because bts are in the kpop industry, us armys are friends with you and let you go like nothing happened, we will never forget how you all treated us and bts in 2015/2016. The death threads, the insults, the programs to ruin bts' comeback... Second of all, weren't you the ones saying that your groups don't need western recognition? Well, now you don't deserve it so easily, work your asses off. I don't care how many stupid articles you can write about our selfishness, we will always think only about bts, not your boy group, not your girl group, only bts count for us. Do you actually succed and win bbmas/take part in the bbma social charts thanks to your work? Good for you. But don't use our work and then point your finger at us crying. Mic Drop.

[+0, -0] Well, where were you all when the whole Kpop community bullied ARMYS and called them BEGGARMYs for requesting/asking radiostations to play BTS songs? Where were you when a whole lot of them tried to invalidate awards won by BTS by calling out awards shows? How would you think a group of people who've been ostracized from kpop community feel when after all their hardwork ,enduring all namecallings and mockeries, to see a radiostation dedicating a Kpop hour to people who've never even put a single effort to request for their song? ARMYS aren't blocking anyone to succeed in anything as long as they put effort into it. Walk the Walk.
And don't go off as if You are better than ARMYs.. the offensive defense they've been showing nowadays was brought on by your rotten words and discouragement. Go promote your faves and try to atleast put an effort on streaming their MV's. The thing about you all is you're more on trashtalking other fandoms than actually showing dedication to your groups.

[+0, -0] I'm not an army or EXO-L in anyway. But I can take away a biased opinion for my own group and recognise that BTS is what's trending and popular globally atm, they have similar popular and recognition worldwide now to Psy. I'm sorry but when Psy was charting in the western market massively did the gp want to hear other kpop songs? Nope. We wanted what's trending. What's popular. What's charting. Once other groups get songs charting, then let's talk.
Also from what I've seen EXO-Ls made fun of ARMYs asking for BTS to play on radio. They called it needing "Western validation". Not just EXO-Ls but I've seen even ones in my own fandom and others say this. People who thought of it as begging for validation are now mad when their faves' chance on radio is taken away? Wow. Now that is pathetic.

First of all, the kpop community called us beggars for "western recognition", mocking us as always. Now that we have finally opened our way in America, everyone wants to join and use our hard work

Does someone want to tell this Netizen which country Toronto is located in? Lol

I'm not sure what's more stupid: ARMYs cancelling this because they don't want EXO(-L)s to "ride their coattails" rme, or EXO-Ls who mocked BTS for wanting western validation when their faves couldn't get any.

I have a feeling it comes from the former 1D/5S0S crowd who joined their fandom but the elitist and victim mentality amongst some ARMY about how BTS isn't kpop or whatever is so gross. BTS are a Korean pop group who have never identified as anything other than kpop artists. Their main base is Korea and always will be and they would be nowhere without their Korean fandom. To try and elevate them over other artists because of the fact that America is currently giving them attention is gross and honestly kind of racist. BTS themselves are all about promoting the genre so where the hell do these BTS are above KPOP comments come from?

And with regards to this radio station thing, it's a real dick move from those butthurt fans. A kpop hour could do amazing things for smaller artists and give more Asians exposure, why on earth would you demand exclusivity over it? Should BTS now stop releasing lightsticks, mini albums or promoting in Japan because those things are reserved solely for the artists who did it first and anyone other than that is coattail riding?

This, it's so weird that they're parroting this idea that BTS are "above" K-pop when the group itself never ever agreed on this or claimed to be too good for the title. It's insulting to them and all other K-pop groups doing great things. If anything all the things that make BTS great are exactly because they're a K-pop group! The social media content, the photoshoots, videos, catchy tunes, etc etc. Not only should they be proud representatives but they could never make it big as "regular" pop to begin with. They have nothing to offer on that level that we don't already have a much better version of in the west.

I've tried speaking with BTS fans and they may be one of the worst kpop fandoms I've encountered. They think BTS got popular outside of hallyu and think it's an insult to mention the 10+ years of increased western recognition that came before them (because of other groups/artists). They also think BTS isn't kpop, nor are they kpop fans because they ONLY like BTS.

I honestly don't understand this mentality. Back when I was heavy into kpop fandom, fighting with Sones about 2NE1 (you know, the good old days), I can't think of any fandom that would try to block opportunities for other groups. We used to think any kpop recognition outside Asia was a good thing for all of us because it meant the potential for more concerts to see groups we loved. We would have all been trying to figure out how to listen to this station to catch "Kpop hour".

I really don't understand the "We ONLY stan BTS" people because BTS's music isn't particularly distinct from kpop as a genre (nor particularly good but that's just my opinion). They also managed to ensure that station probably never plays BTS either so great job guys!

ARMY better be careful because while they want BTS to be the next 1D they might turn into The Wanted instead.

this station is literally a small digital only station and one of the few that play not just top 40 current pop songs. Would have been cool to have a whole hour dedicated to non-english music but ok.

Has BTS even played Toronto before?

Usually I don't pay attention to these type of things, but seeing this a couple days ago really irritated me.

They're so damn selfish and stupid, they ruined an opportunity for themselves. They should be grateful you have the social media exposure for a chance like this. It's a big deal to have a radio station dedicate an HOUR to Kpop everyday? No matter where the station is and they ruined it. To top it all off, they're proud of it.

Army better gather and humble themselves really quickly because you never know who else is paying attention. As quickly as BTS rose in the US, they can fall and lose out on opportunities because companies, etc won't want to deal with fan behavior.

Considering the fact that the only Asian artist that is heard on the mainstream radio today is Bruno Mars, this would've been great exposure and education to other smaller artists. It's a shame. There are so many videos of "Americans react to (insert country's music/dramas/cinema) and its like they didn't know/realize that other countries have their own cultural entertainment and they're always so surprised that other countries listen to music that isn't Western-made. It's kind of ridiculous.

I know that there was a lot of k-pop infighting back then between stans but the entire k-pop community came together to support when K-pop artists were recognized in Western media (voting for Big Bang, watching SNSD on Letterman, supporting Psy, etc.). I'm tired.

tbh this really disappointed me. i do see the logic of bts fans kind of, i only became a fan like september so i missed them on the bbmas etc but according to secondhand accounts bts fans feel like they were made fun of a lot and like bts's achievements were dragged down? so i understand why some may feel defensive, but tbh this doesn't excuse acting like bts 'paved the way' for kpop in the west and it's kind of sad that's accepted as a common mentality with armys, i feel like most just say it because other people do and they don't know enough about kpop to criticise it (like there was a thing going round on twitter today of a bts stan saying about underrated kpop artists and they included IU, snsd and taeyeon lmfao). but anyway it's arrogant and off putting as hell to see ppl disparage a whole genre that a) is already shat on a lot in ways often tinged with racism b) a genre their own faves are proud to be a part of. like namjoon himself even said something about how he was happy to be representing kpop. it's just arrogance.

"I was so dumb for thinking kpop fandoms just wanted everyone to be loved and recognized, no matter who your fave group was." No, this was definitely close-to-true in the past. I think the change to more instantaneous mediums (forums/coms->twitter) and competition in the industry are pushing fans into more obsessive and rabid tendencies.

IA @ your whole comment. I've been following BTS since their debut on/off and I really like the group they've grown into. But it's so difficult to get into them rn bc the insane fanaticism is inescapable. Like, every time I think I follow the right people on twitter they get pulled into some fandom drama and show their asses.

How armys harnessed this social media power with BigHit and BTS is so impressive and initially made me so excited. But seeing that same energy behind *this* kinda behavior for over an entire year? Ugh let it end, please.
