Also, in case you haven't heard, BigHit has officially announced that they will no longer accept gifts for BTS and Namjoon, Taehyung, Hobi, Jimin, Jungkook (who apparently remembered his password) posted in the fancafe to thank the fans.

Edit: Added Yoongi's tweet and Jungkook's fancafe post.

Edit2: Yoongi and Jin posted in the fancafe, too.

That Mic Drop dance break killed me.

I don't know why Jungkook had a suspender, though. I'm pretty sure his pants were glued on; they didn't need any help staying up.

Took them long enough to stop accepting fangifts. Like they really should have stopped when the gifts got unbearably expensive, but okay, greed is too hard for yโ€™all to manage til now I guess, I could tell by the fan cafe posts ๐Ÿ˜•. Anyway, my unconvinced passive-aggressive ass aside, hopefully this puts an end to all the fangift tweets I have to tolerate on twitter from fan sites and ordinary fans. I just think itโ€™s dumb to give expensive gifts to millionaires who can already afford what youโ€™re giving them. Iโ€™d rather see that money being spent on charity, whether itโ€™s with the artistโ€™s campaign/organisation or on behalf of the artistโ€™s for another campaign/organisation.

Sorry for the rant, I just have a lot of thoughts about this.

to answer your question, i must admit, that was more of me projecting my disappointment with the fancafe posts than anything. bc you're right, all they did was break the news as gently as possible to an audience where some members could potentially end them (i.e. fansites). but it was gentle to the point that i got kind of annoyed, like "oh, you're so soft about it, does this mean that you actually don't know what was wrong and would prefer this shit to continue??" so that's where that came from, and it sounds off now that i reread it. i guess the principled side of me just wanted to know why they were uncomfortable and whether the reasons for it went beyond just not being able to use all their gifts and therefore disappointing fans, and was disappointed that the response they gave didn't give me that.

"we feel gross accepting all this shit we have literally no use for" lmao that's a good interpretation. i'm pretty sure they feel that way for some (if not most) of the gifts they receive. i hope they feel gross about the prices of some of these gifts as well, because honestly, it sickens me.

oh man, i could go on all day about the toxicity of korean fan culture and entitlement, which you can totally see the result of here in this situation. but i agree with you, at least they've made the decision to stop accepting them, and that's what's important regardless of how they communicated it.

ita with all of this, especially after the last round of gifts for jimin's? birthday where it was floor to ceiling gucci and other unnecessary designer gear which you know their rich asses can easily afford. it almost feels like a fan competition at this point, like if i get oppa the most gifts then he'll finally notice me lol

From: [identity profile] jyusou.livejournal.com
For me, the one I distinctly remember was the Burberry gift mountain that fansite NunaV sent to Taehyung on his birthday this past year. Itโ€™s like they bought him the entire store and itโ€™s just wrong on so many levels. And youโ€™re on point there, in the end, for some, fangifting became a competition among fans to get noticed by the members, or to gain status and power-play within the fandom itself.

this is spot on, when fansites in particular tweet photos of everything they're gifting (bags upon bags of designer wear, pristinely wrapped boxes with bows, gold bars????) i actually get this horrible sick feeling in my stomach. reading through the replies to them is even worse, all of the 'my baby deserves this, he works so hard!' nonsense, like god damn why are you praising and supporting this?

like you said, the bigger the pile of gifts, the more authenticity the person seems to have within the fandom. it's especially troubling when known sasaengs are being praised for gifting ludicrous amounts of stuff to the member they basically stalk. 'you take pretty pictures and bought them x amount of things for their birthday so we can forgive you' teas. the hypocrisy when army claim to be a self-policing fandom who don't tolerate sasaengs is jarring smh

Honestly it sickens me too that this insane amount of wealth being spent on - letโ€™s get real here - a bunch of young adults we barely know who could clearly afford it/donโ€™t need it, all artistic achievements and visible personalities aside. At least the members communicated one thing correctly and directly to fans: that the wealth is probably best spent elsewhere.

One of my friends irl said ARMYs are the best fandom in comparison to others and that the fandom has an โ€œangelicโ€ reputation to maintain and Iโ€™m like excuse me what angelic reputation?? The way I see it this fandom is no different from any other fandom by attacking those who pose potential threat to our imaginary entitlement/ownership of oppa (case and point: Cupcakke) and by putting actual sasaengs on a padestal for taking pretty photos and being rich enough to give oppa gifts that he โ€œclearly deservesโ€.

it truly dumbfounds me that anyone would spend such vast amounts on... strangers? maybe it's my own aversion to the entire obsessive fan culture that surrounds kpop idols (even fansigns incite this sort of extreme spending, i've seen upwards of $1000 being paid out for what is basically kneeling in front of another human for 30 seconds) but dedicating yourself - and your bank account - to a celebrity is a concept which will remain forever baffling to me.

lmao @ your friend and the idea of 'army' and 'angelic reputation' in the same sentence. the cupcakke situation still annoys me to no end, the hypocrisy at play might have been comical if it weren't death threats that she was receiving. army in particular have the entire entitlement to oppa shtick down to a fine art.

Congrats to BTS!

Finally, Jungkook is sitting on a good millions of pounds worth of gifts that he could probably easily buy himself.

And Taehyung can buy his own Gucci for himself and his new puppy, the fans don't need to.

They should have put a stop to fan gifts ages ago. This is legitimately a thing I wonder about, but where do they stuff all the plushies they get at fanmeets and stuff? At some point someone was going to find a dumpster full of fanthings and it would have turned into a huge scandal. I hope the fans who bought them expensive clothes will chanel their monetary excess into something useful like charity in bts' name or sth

I'm not sure about BTS, but a lot of other idols have said that they donate the plushies to orphanages.

every time i read this i get the image of 2-3 underpaid bighit interns dressed in black hoodies and full-face masks driving a truck full of plushies and fangifts at ass o'clock in the morning to incinerate them at an undisclosed location and it's cracking me up.

Congrats boys!! I love Namjoon's speech. "Watching our videos by chance, liked our music, and thought that our performance were great." - This is me :)

They all look so good (Jin in black hair omg!) but my god, Taehyung is getting more handsome everyday, he really looks like a manhwa character *A*

echoing everyone else's thoughts about the fan gifts, tbh they should have ended that shit a long time ago so it screams greed that it took them until now to finally put a stop to it but that's a rant for another day lol

lowkey wish they would be more direct in their statements when it comes to army. i understand that they're idols and they don't want to risk alienating their fanbase/livelihood but when your fandom oversteps the line (which is often lbr) take some responsibility and call that shit out, radio silence or tame fan cafe posts is nagl

SLAY ALL THE AWARDS MY BEAUTIFUL AWKWARD CHILDREN.

Letters and charity donations in the group's name is always better than overpriced gifts anyway. I remember in the good ol days us Cassiopeias would always make big donations of rice and money on the boys' birthdays.
