After Youn won the Best Supporting Actress Award at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles for her role in "Minari" on April 25, Cho, 75, who was a popular musician in Korea in the 1970-80s, had an interview with a Korean media outlet, where he was asked to give his thoughts about the woman he divorced 34 years ago.
He said that it was, "Great news and something I want to congratulate her for very much," and added: "Isn't her Oscar winning like the best, most awesome vengeance to all cheating husbands? Of course, I am the one who cheated on her so I have to be more discreet from now on." Many of her fans have found these remarks offensive and upsetting.
Writer Lee Seok-won said on his online blog: "I don't understand the reporter who sought out Cho, who got divorced from Youn 34 years ago, to ask about her Oscar achievement. But I also don't understand Cho who had the gall to respond like that."

Samsung heirs to donate half of Lee Kun-hee's legacy
Heirs of the late Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee will pay more than 12 trillion won ($10.7 billion) in inheritance taxes, while separately donating one trillion won to support the fight against COVID-19 and research into rare child diseases, the group announced Wednesday.
The Lee family, including his wife and three children, also decided to donate around 23,000 works from the deceased's art collection, valued at around 2.5 trillion won, to national museums.

The family of late Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee has agreed to donate some 23,000 pieces of artwork from his extensive art collection, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on Wednesday.
About 21,600 pieces, including 60 national treasures, will be donated to the National Museum of Korea. They include the Joseon-era landscape painting, "Inwang Jaseokdo," by painter Jeong Seon, which was designated as National Treasure No. 216 in 1984, and a Buddhist painting from the Goryeo era titled, "Painting of the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion with a Thousand Arms," which was designated as Treasure No. 2,015 in 2019.
