The Korean film industry is enjoying a boom this year with the total number of viewers until Tuesday at 41.93 million, up over 10 million from the same period last year. And Korean films attracted more moviegoers than Hollywood blockbusters and other foreign films, accounting for 53.5 percent of the total number.
One reason is the popularity of films that appeal to adult audiences. Some 13 Korean films drew over 1 million moviegoers this year, and five of them were rated R.
"Nameless Gangster" was the hottest movie in the first half of this year. It won over critics and audiences with its credible yet entertaining plot and vivid characterizations of criminal elements in Korea's most attractive coastal city of Busan.
"The Concubine" topped the box office as of Wednesday as it has become the talk of the town with steamy sex scenes. "A Muse", "The Scent" and "The Taste of Money" also drew much attention with racy scenes.
Industry insiders say the trend is unusual since it excludes a whole segment of enthusiastic moviegoers under 19.

Ailee doesn't appear in the MV, she just raps. But the song is pretty good though. Wouldn't hurt to listen.

Gaon recently released the sales chart numbers for the month of May, and Girls’ Generation – TTS’s “Twinkle” secured the number one spot for both physical album sales and digital. The first Girls’ Generation subunit had an impressive debut album which sold 139,388 physical copies during the month of May. The subunit consisting of Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun focused more on vocals rather than complex dance choreography and were able to show a different side of Girls’ Generation. The strong stages put forth by Girls’ Generation – TTS led to twelve victories across the various music shows.
Girls’ Generation – TTS remained in the spotlight even while they were off stage, as they made numerous appearances on other programs and in various publications. Some of the notable events for Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun during their promotional period as Girls’ Generation – TTS included an conversation with DJ Isak on her radio show “K-Poppin”, a photoshoot with “K-wave” magazine, and a lengthy interview with “Elle Girl” magazine.

With continued piracy issues and low margins of the local digital music market, the Korean music industry is shifting its focus to live concerts. According to industry experts, the Korean concert market was around 150 billion won ($131.7 million) in 2011, and is showing consistent growth: Tickets and merchandise sales are hitting record highs, and domestic entertainment companies are increasingly looking to showcase their artists overseas.
“In the past, most of the money in the music industry came from album sales, but now, selling music is far from being lucrative,” says an industry insider who wished to remain anonymous. “These days, in Korea particularly, consumers expect music to basically be free. So now, having a hit song is more of a calling card rather than a money-making endeavor. After you have your name made with a popular song, the money comes from endorsement deals, and then from concert tickets and merchandising.”
Big business
Last year also saw CJ E&M, the entertainment arm of the Korean conglomerate CJ Group, launch its global K-pop concert brand “M-Live” in November. South Korea’s largest media company invested 10 billion won into the business, and is attempting to transform the concert industry in the region by tapping into its parent conglomerate’s previously established global resources.
CJ E&M says its 2011 revenue from the company’s biggest live music event Jisan Valley Rock Festival

After completing their charity event for Etude House as well as several shows and interviews in Taiwan, the SHINee members, with the exception of Minho who had already flown back to Korea, finally departed Taiwan to travel back to Korea on the 19th.
Due to the fact that it is exam season for students, only about 150 fans were present at the airport; however, due to SHINee’s high level of popularity, almost 30 fans purchased plane tickets to fly with SHINee on the same flight to Korea. The four members of SHINee had their heads down and were seen constantly yawning at the airport, essentially having zero interaction with the fans. Their agency explained that it may be because they were sleeping in the car while on their way to the airport.
Prior to their departure, SHINee filmed a show, in which Taemin celebrated his birthday early by having a xiao long bao (small steamed stuffed bun) cake. During the filming, the members also took Mandarin tests and took a stab at Mandarin tongue twisters. Taemin came in last, while Key was crowned the winner and received a tray of dumplings as his prize. Key then humorously described the dumplings as "small steamed stuffed bun’s little brother." The show will be aired on the 24th.
SHINee will be holding their second concert, "SHINee World II," on July 21st and 22nd in Seoul.

Erotic period film "The Concubine" is heating up the big screen this summer, beating out Hollywood blockbusters including director Ridley Scott's new sci-fi film "Prometheus" as well as "Men in Black 3" in local cinemas. The film, which opened here on June 6, has attracted over 1.8 million people as of the end of last week.
The R-rated film's strength lies in its risque portrayal of sexuality in an otherwise sexually repressive period in Korean history. Centering around the character Hwa-yeon (Jo Yeo-jeong), the daughter of an aristocrat who enters the royal palace as one of the king's concubines, the film features a steamy love triangle involving her, Prince Seong-won (Kim Dong-wuk) and a commoner, Kwon-yu (Kim Min-joon). Director Kim Dae-seung who started his film career as the protege of director Im Kwon-taek, has gained critical acclaim for his feature films including "Bungee Jumping of their Own" (2000) and "Blood Rain" (2005). Kim talked to the JoongAng Ilbo about his newest film, "The Concubine".
Q. In the film, Hwa-yeon in a way starts turning into the queen, whom she loathes. Why?
A. Hwa-yeon and the queen mirror each other. The queen is Hwa-yeon's future and Hwa-yeon is the queen's past. It's a vicious cycle of lust and greed. Even the beautiful maternal love of these women turns to greed, which is only getting worse at this stage, in this highly competitive society.
Parents put their children in private institutes to study, that endless routine, saying that they are doing it for their sake. But that act also reflects the parents' own desires. The aim of this film was to look at the mother and son relationship between the prince and the queen, and reflect on such relationships in our own society.
