The annual exodus to hometowns for family reunions celebrating the Lunar New Year holiday or Seollal starts Saturday.

Nearly 32 million people or 60 percent of the entire population of South Korea are expected to travel by car, bus, train or plane during the country’s biggest holiday that continues through Tuesday.

Roads out of the capital to the provinces are expected to be busiest Sunday morning, while those to Seoul will be crowded Monday afternoon, according to the Korea Highway Corp.

“We expect traffic jams to reach their peak Sunday morning when most homebound people are expected to hit the road,” a Korea Highway Corp. official said. “But the roads will also be congested on Monday with those returning to Seoul.”
It is expected to take more than three and a half hours from Seoul to Daejeon )

A 37-year-old housewife and her three children were found dead in a room at their apartment in this southern port city in an apparent suicide pact, police said Saturday.

The woman, whose named was not available, was found hanged by her husband at around 11 a.m. Saturday, police said. The husband was apparently unaware of the death because he was sleeping in another room, they said.

Police, alerted by the 40-year-old husband, inspected the room and found the couple's three children, aged 4, 9 and 10, dead in the same room where the housewife was found hanged.

Police said they were trying to determine the exact cause of death but suspected that the woman might have killed herself after killing her three children.

South Korea has the highest suicide rate among the 30 nations in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, of which it is a member.

Koreans’ driving distance virtually same as Americans’
The general belief would be that American motorists drive far greater distances than Koreans because they reside in a much bigger nation.

That is not the case, according to the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) Thursday. The average daily distance traveled is 36.1 kilometers per vehicle for Koreans compared to 36.6 kilometers for Americans.

The figure was 26.3 kilometers for Japan, whose territory is comparable to that of Korea. MKE officials have struggled to come up with an explanation.
American households maintain multiple vehicles while Koreans typically run only a single family car )

I’m a new writer at Seoulbeats. Not only that, I’m actually something of a newbie in the K-pop scene, having been inducted in early 2011. What I definitely am though, is a huge J-pop fan. I’ve been in the J-pop fandom since 2008, which means I’ve been there to properly appreciate BoA, Tohoshinki and Younha (when she was still something recognised in Japan) long before the current half-assed hallyu wave, for lack of a better description. More importantly though, I’ve been able to look at everything from the perspective of a J-pop fan, and considering K-pop’s current foray into the Japanese market, the J-pop perspective is something that should be taken into consideration.

North Korea's new leader, Kim Jong-un, has been in place for the month since the death of his father was announced.

In that time, the country's tightly-controlled media machine has lavished him with praise, calling him a "genius" and a "brilliant" military strategist. Its political structure has also garlanded him with formal titles every bit as extravagant.

But amid all the titles and the propaganda, what can we learn about North Korea's future direction under its new leader?

In the weeks since Kim Jong-un has been in power, most telling is the way he remains overshadowed by his late father and grandfather.
Despite a flood of propaganda aimed at boosting the image of the inexperienced young leader )
