While appearing on a recent episode of Fashion N’s “Actress House“, the members of U-KISS revealed personal information on how idols are styled for the stage.

They revealed, “Male idols are just as good at applying makeup as female idols are. We sometimes even do our own smoky eye makeup.”

The members then shocked the MCs by drawing their own eyeliner on the spot. Maknae Dongho added, “It gets sore around our eyes when we put on makeup so it stings sometimes.”

At the mention of stars headlining for their airport fashion, Dongho commented, “Before we head overseas, we all go shopping together. We receive the help of stylists even for our airport fashion, so it’s like we’re dressing for the stage.”

Concluding their segment, the boys revealed that although they haven’t had any dating experiences yet, they would like to get into a scandal with a girl group.

Check out the full episode through “Fashion N” on May 20th.

An appeals court Thursday ordered South Korea's government to pay more compensation to a North Korean refugee, who said his relatives in the North were jailed after Seoul officials leaked his identity.

The Seoul High Court awarded Lee Kwang-Su 120 million won ($111,000) in compensation after he appealed a 35 million won judgement in his favour last October.

Lee, 42, had sued the Seoul government in 2008 for 1.15 billion won.

He said he repeatedly asked officials who questioned him after his arrival in 2006 to keep his identity secret for fear of reprisals against relatives.

But the refugee said the information was quickly leaked to the media, which led to the disappearance of his kin.

Lee, who now lives in the United States, told Yonhap news agency Wednesday that 22 relatives in the North were sent to a political prison camp where he believes they would have been condemned to death.

In October last year a district court acknowledged that authorities inadvertently leaked such details, but said there was a lack of evidence about the fate of his relatives.

The appeals court ruled Thursday that Lee must be given greater compensation for stress caused by the disappearance of his kin. It said the government should have not leaked his identity "in view of special circumstances" in North Korea.

Lee arrived in South Korea with his wife and two children aboard a small boat. He claimed he had planned to go to Japan and seek asylum at the US embassy there, but the boat drifted towards the South in bad weather.

South Korea is home to more than 21,000 North Koreans who fled hunger or political oppression. There have been frequent reports of reprisals against family members left behind.

E-book mania has hit South Korea thanks to successful sales of tablet PCs. Until recently, Korea was not part of the global e-book craze. This year, however, explosive growth in the domestic e-book market is expected.

Kyobo Book Center recently announced e-book sales for the first quarter of this year (Q1) 6.4 times higher than those of Q1 last year. The number of Q1 e-book downloads skyrocketed by a factor of 96 from 2010 to 2011. Statistics from online mobile device application stores also reveal the popularity of e-books. Among Korean application sellers, Apple’s App Store recorded sales of 16,440 e-books and 7,260 educational books, while T store sold 20,596 e-books and 5,068 educational and foreign language books.
A look at the publishing market also confirms the popularity of e-books )

Following the ban of X-5’s “Fantasy“ yesterday, ZE:A’s “Be My Girl” has been added to the list because it has been deemed as ‘unsuitable for minors’ by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.

The track is from their first official album, “Lovability“, and it’s received a parental advisory sticker because a part of the lyrics stated, “Be my girl tonight.” The ministry explained that it was too sexually suggestive.

Representatives of Star Empire stated, “‘Be My Girl’ has been deemed unfit for minors and will no longer be sold to those under the age of 19. Whether we will edit the lyrics or not is still undecided.”

Songs that are judged as ‘harmful media to the youth’ cannot be sold to minors under the age of 19, and also cannot be aired on television channels before 10 PM.

Netizens said, “So many songs have ‘be my girl’ in them, the standards are really confusing lately”, and “Exactly what part of those lyrics are sexually suggestive? What are they even thinking?”

Progress is slow for Korea’s transgenders

‘Ever since I was young, I knew I was a woman, although I had the body of a man.’ - Kim Hye-sook

“The Fantastic Show” was launched by Harisu a month ago in Paju, Gyeonggi. The first of its kind in Korea, it consists of 30 performers, 20 of them transgender, performing song and dance.

The camera zooms in on the chest of a woman in an elegant black dress before panning up to slowly reveal her beautiful face and long, wavy tresses. Next, the camera focuses on her masculine-looking hands; then comes a close-up of her dark red lips and smoky eyes, before her bulging Adam’s apple is shown. At the end, the actress bursts into laughter.

With the 30-second commercial, the nation’s first transgender entertainer, Harisu, made her television debut a decade ago, knocking down a once impenetrable barrier for one of the most repressed minority groups in the country.

Among the 20 transgender performers in “The Fantastic Show,” a live song and dance show launched by Harisu, the nation’s first transgender celebrity, Choi Han-bit addresses herself as one of “Harisu’s kids.”

Choi gained fame two years ago when she made it to the final round of a local supermodel contest, becoming both the first transgender to do so and the first such participant.

The 24-year-old college senior, who is majoring in dance, said she still vividly recalls Harisu’s debut commercial a decade ago.

Entertainer and well-known animal rights advocate Lee Hyori recently posted a semi-controversial tweet that has netizens buzzing.

Apparently, Hyori is intensely against a fur show that’s coming up in Seoul as she expressed disapproval of the current legal standing of furs in the city.

She tweeted yesterday, “[To the person who leads Seoul], they say that on May 16th in West Hollywood, CA, it became illegal to sell fur coats. Are you really going to stand by and let the fur show open in Seoul?

Fans seeing the tweet responded, “Of course, it’s Lee Hyori,” and “We have to stop the sacrifice of poor animals for people’s use.”

U-KISS' Dongho recently appeared in the movie "My Little Black Dress" with co-star Yoo In Na. Hoping to improve his acting skills, he takes on the roll of "Yoo Seungwon," a high school student madly in love with Yoo In Na.

In one scene of the movie, Yoo In Na is madly yelling after another character. Her cries awake her classmate Dongho, who angrily cries out, “F***! Shut up! Aren’t you too old to be rude?” Yoo In Na leans forward and nods uncertainly, to which he rolls his eyes and says, “Oh God, this Korean. Speak only English in here, you stupid old lady!” She nods again and agrees, extending her hand forward to shake his. Dongho sneers and insults her in Korean, “Crazy b****!” The cut ends with Yoo In Na's eyes widening at his insult.

Amused fans have left comments like “I find this really funny!” and “Haha! He's so cute. I want to hear him speak more English.”

What do you think of his English lines?

‘Korean chic’ gains attention overseas via YouTube and makeup brands

A Vietnamese girl demonstrates how to do a “Korean eyebag look” in her YouTube post.

With Girl’s Generation’s bubbly song “Snowy Wish” running in the background, a Thai girl with the YouTube ID onnbaby demonstrates how to pull off the “Korean flawless look.”

“I have seen lots of people doing Korean makeup styles and yes, I am now doing one of them too!” she says.

The basic steps she points out are ― one, clean and glowing flawless skin; two, thick, straight (or triangular) brows; three, minimum or no eye shadow and four, natural lip color.

The cosmetic brands she flashes in front of the camera before applying them are mostly low and mid-priced South Korean brands like The Face Shop, Etude House, or Holika Holika which are popular among teenage girls and women in their early 20s.

As hallyu, or the Korean Wave, sweeps across Asia and even some parts of the Americas and Europe, admirers of Korean actresses or singers are growing in number all over the world. Girls, especially, seem hooked on the Korean look.
