Monthly Oricon: Kara #2, Jang Geun Suk #4, Soshi #6

KARA placed second amongst all the artists who released singles in Japan for April.

According to the Oricon Chart on May 5th, KARA’s “Jet Coaster Love” single which was released back on April 6th sold more than 170,000 copies making it the 2nd top selling single of April. The number 1 spot went to Kanjani 8 with a total of 230,000 single sales.

In it’s first week, KARA sold 123,000 copies making it the top selling single for that week. Even after 4 weeks, they’re still within the top 10 on the Oricon weekly charts.

In addition to KARA, other Korean stars have claimed spots on the April single sales ranking. Jang Geun Suk claimed 4th place with 119,149 copies and SNSD came in 6th place with 100,461 copies.

Actress Han Ye-seul has been charged with a hit-and-run offense. According to Seoul Gangnam Police on Wednesday, Han has been charged with hitting a 36-year-old man identified only by his surname Do in the lower back with the rearview mirror of her Porsche on Tuesday morning at the entrance to the parking lot of an apartment building in Samseong-dong and fleeing the scene.

A police officer said CCTV footage shows Han hitting Do's back with the rearview mirror of her car, causing Do to teeter and grab the trunk of the car in front of him.

Han's lawyers reportedly met Do and offered him W5 million (US$1=W1,075) in compensation, but Do claimed Han did not apologize while his doctor told him the injury will take two weeks to heal properly. He therefore reported the actress to police.

In a statement, Han's management agency Sidus HQ denied she fled the scene of the accident, and unveiled their own CCTV footage of the accident. Police plan to question the actress on Friday.

After School's Jooyeon And Her Twin Sons

On May 3rd, After School’s Jooyeon shared two adorable photos of ‘her’ twins from her role in KBS 1TV’s daily drama, “Smile, Donghae.”

The idol wrote, “After School made a comeback for the first time in a while! But people think I’m a mother of twins… Kang, San, your mother is a singer!”

Kang and San are the names of her twin sons in the drama, and she can be seen posing with the babies in the accompanying pictures. Fans commented back, “Hello mother of Kang and San!”, “The twins are so adorable”, and “Please raise them well!”

Korea Vs. Men: The Plight of Conscientious Objectors

May 15 is International Conscientious Objectors’ Day, but don’t expect much of a celebration from Korean authorities. Refusing to participate in the nation’s compulsory military service on the grounds of conscience has never been recognized by the Republic of Korea, and Korean conscripts who nonetheless try, find themselves facing prison time. That’s not the case in most countries where, even with conscription in effect, alternative forms of service are available for conscientious objectors. Then again, most countries aren’t neighbors to a million man military dictatorship that routinely threatens to turn your capitol into a “sea of fire.”

Ultimately, the determination of conscientious objectors status is a question of fact like any other status that may allow one to legitimately avoid military service. And if the authorities are able to investigate cases of break-dancers feigning psychosis and determine whether or not an extracted tooth should have remained in place, then certainly uncovering cases of fraudulent attempts to invoke conscientious objector status is within their ability. 

Finally, it should be remembered that those Koreans asking the ROK to acknowledge their conscientious objector status aren’t looking to avoid civic duty; they’re asking for a means to fulfill it. Certainly conscientious objectors will be able to benefit the Republic and its national security more by participating in alternative service programs of equal length and burden than by being locked up in prison, as more than 5,000 have been since the issue was first brought to the public’s attention a decade ago.

On May 6th, an announcement was made through Everland’s official Twitter, which read:

South Korean Man Found 'Crucified' on Cross
A South Korean man said to have fanatical religious views was found dead on a crucifix after an apparent attempt to emulate the death of Jesus Christ, the Korea Herald reports.

The body of the 58-year-old taxi driver was found on a wooden cross Sunday in an abandoned quarry mine in Mungyeong, with his hands and feet nailed to it.

Young North Koreans who have defected to the South are determined to see their dream - a unified Korea - become reality, even if their counterparts in the South don’t quite agree.

"My dream is to get the two Koreas united. In a united Korea, I will run a shelter to feed hungry North Koreans," said 20-year-old Yu Chull-Min (not his real name), a North Korean studying at Yomyung School in Seoul where students from the North, aged 16 to 24, are finishing high school.

But this lofty dream often gets lost in confusion and sometimes humiliation, as these young North Korean realise how different they are from South Korean youths.

For the first time since her debut, comedian Kim Shin Young will appear in a reality program.

Scheduled to guest on the May 10th episode of MBC’s “Dramatic”, Kim Shin Young will show off a more womanly image, unlike her typical light and carefree one.

Not only that, but Kim Shin Young will reveal her feelings about continuing her entertainment career despite her suddenly worsened health conditions.

The star was diagnosed with a fatty liver and hypoglycaemia, which worsened after she contracted swine flu. Currently, she’s going to an oriental medical clinic for treatment.

Kim Shin Young’s doctor expressed the seriousness of her status by stating, “If it continues like this, the worse case senario will result in her quitting her entertainment career.”

Responding to this, Kim Shin Young’s manager (who’s been with her for the past 6 years) and her close friends expressed their love towards her as they made plans for her health recovery.

Tablo to Speak at Stanford on "Asian Images"

Epik High's talented rapper Tablo will be speaking at his alma mater on Tuesday, May 10th from 7-8PM on "Asian Images" for Stanford's Asian American Students' Association (AASA) at Cubberley Auditorium. On Stanford's AASA's website it is written,

"May 10, 2011: ASIAN IMAGES - TABLO AT STANFORD
Tablo (Daniel Seonwoong Lee) is an alumnus of Stanford university, where he graduated with a Bachelor's in English with Distinction (2001) and a Master's in English (2002). Tablo is a critically acclaimed music artist best known for his work as the producer and emcee for the Korean hip hop trio Epik High, which became the first Korean artists to debut at #1 on a US music album chart (iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap) in 2010."

After the happy ending to the fiasco regarding Tablo and his alleged education fraudulation, Tablo is currently taking a break from music activities.
