Kim Soo-hyun began his mandatory military service without a ruckus Monday.
The actor entered an army training center located in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, around noon.
Kim arrived at the site in a black van and entered the center without addressing the crowd of some 40 international fans, who had been waiting at the entrance of the center since morning.
Kim’s management agency Keyeast Entertainment had previously said that Kim did not plan to address fans or the media prior to the start of his service. “We did not want to seem particularly noisy,” the agency said.
Having suffered a heart condition as a child, Kim had been assigned to nonactive service as a public service worker after a physical examination in 2012. However, the actor worked to improve his health in order to be posted to active duty. In 2015, after a second checkup, Kim was deemed fit for active duty.
The actor is known to international audiences for his roles in drama series such as “Moon Embracing the Sun” (2012) and “My Love from the Star” (2013). He most recently starred in the psychological thriller film “Real” (2017).
After five weeks of training, Kim will be assigned to a unit and will serve for 21 months. Kim is scheduled to be discharged on July 22, 2019.

Kim Soo Hyun Bids Fans Farewell Through Social Media Before Quietly Enlisting
On October 23, Kim Soo Hyun officially enlisted in the military in order to fulfill his mandatory requirement as a male Korean citizen.
The actor arrived at a recruit training center located in Paju, where many domestic and international fans sent him off with handmade signs.
While Kim Soo Hyun quietly enlisted without any speeches, he left a message for his fans through Instagram.
He wrote, “Hello, this is Kim Soo Hyun. I wanted to briefly greet everyone before I enlist. I want to express my gratitude to those who have always supported me. I will return in good health. I hope everyone stays healthy.”
A source from his agency explained the actor’s choice to quietly enlist, saying, “Kim Soo Hyun wanted to go quietly. To be honest, as the only difference between him and the other people enlisting is that he happens to be a celebrity, it is burdensome to be singled out. Would you not agree that it’s important to not cause discomfort for the others who are enlisting with him?”
Kim Soo Hyun will undergo basic training for five weeks, before carrying out his service for 21 months. He is set to be discharged on July 22, 2019.
We wish Kim Soo Hyun the best of luck!
