8 Best New Songs of the Week

BTS, “DNA”
We won’t talk about the fact that K-pop megastars felt the need to allow the Chainsmokers into their orbit on their new album. Dammit, I just did. Anyway, on to more important matters: BTS dropped an album this week and the only single you need to care about (in fairness, the Chainsmokers collab is fine), “DNA,” is absolutely not a Kendrick Lamar cover, but the sound of a boy band headed in a new direction plotted for crossover domination. I would venture to call this a pop emergency. Unlike so many of the songs that made them an international phenomenon, it’s barely rap and it moves away from trap and the plague of “trop-pop.” “DNA” recategorizes BTS by shrugging off genre entirely; it’s like acoustic(ish)-synth-house, or whatever. Definition aside, all you need to know is “DNA” is one of the better singles of the year, breaking sales records across the planet, and, if this country has any clue left, will make for the band’s biggest American break yet. —DL (OP's note: I didn't ghost write this)

I'm gonna need Jimin to button up his shirt, or I won't be able to read the subtitles for any length of time without getting distracted.

I can't believe they made fun of Jungkook's accent. I love my fellow white Americans coming at people for the tiniest mistakes in English when most of them (white people) here know English and nothing else. Like. Dude. I know how much effort y'all put into trying to pronounce Spanish in high school.

Edit: lmao at Jimin buttoning that button 18 minutes in when a caller thanked him for leaving it unbottoned.

"so if fans could stop gassing up anyone who has some vaguely positive words to say about bangtan that'd be great!" mte

ofc many ppl will have positive words about bangtam bc they know they'll get attention

i don't even know what he said about bangtan (except for him making fun of jungkook's accent), but i always disliked him/had him mute lmao (for stealing translations from fans without apologizing, usually using/clickbaiting army cause he knows we/they're extra, engaging in fandom drama, etc) so i'm glad army are starting to see the light lol.
did you see this?

rme @ 'having trust issues' they'd trust about anyone with their lives if they said they love bts lmao. but yeah army twt should really stop gassing up literally anyone who says something positive about bts, like if some randos with 2K followers say they like bts, they'll get 10K rt from army for saying so alone, it's so idiotic.

omg i love finding army who don't worship his ass, you're officially my fave bts stan on omona lmao!
i find it weird that he seemed to speak up/disagree with them a bit when the women were making fun of their voices/how joon looked but when they made fun of jk's english he joined in.
hnn okay his priorities. I mean not that mocking their voices/appearances is really that much better, but mocking someone's pronunciation is treading into racist territory.

that nate guy, apparently he's a team 10 guy? i feel so old rn but apparently it's two guys that have fake beef on youtube and one of these guy's "crew" is called team 10?? don't quote me on that lol.

i never kept up with all the drama post ahl (not that i was a fan back then), but i heard that both guys who 'mentored' bts during ahl were sexist towards black women? or maybe it was just one of them. but i guess that wouldn't be good enough reason for white armys to drop their asses.
yess lol that gif immediately came to mind.

it's every infos that i gathered from armys on twitter, i'm too lazy to google :| but every youtubers are attention-seekers in my book so yeah, definitely not surprising.

Tony made some comment about black women having attitudes compared to other races of women. A fan called him out in it too and he said it's usually black women...He comes across as one of those guys that says hatful things about black women to justify liking other races of women.

appreciate vulture for the chainsmokers shade.
also re: the jeff thing, just wanted to confirm bc i heard of this on tumblr earlier today but couldn't fact check, did bts ever follow him? and if they did, did they unfollow him after this incident?

the jeff thing is overblown. first off it's not like he BETRAYED bts by not going full army on his colleagues. i listened to the podcast before it was taken dow and when the other two are talking about jimin and tae's voice it's clear that he doesn't agree and is even surprised). was he supposed to be like "TAKE IT BACK, POOR BABY ANGEL JIMIN IS INSECURE ABOUT HIS VOICE AND THEY WORKED SO HARD~"?. honestly i didn't like this podcast either and i thought the two ladies were kind of rude and dismissive in the way they talked about everything (tina is usually always like that but this time there were two of them so it was unbalanced) so i stopped listening to it once i understood that they didn't really like this comeback and were taking this opportunity to kind of vent about the things they don't like about bts, but the witch hunt and twitter melodrama is insane

i used to always be like "rme" when people complained about armys but this comeback the fringe of really intense, overinvested stans seems to have grown larger along with the number of intense, overinvested "antis" frothing at the mouth, and it's exhausting tbh. i need to stick to the music and content

honestly i agree, the only thing that was fucked up during the podcast was them making fun of jungkook's pronounciation. everything else was just their opinion, and it's not like jeff was supposed to cut them off and defend the guys? people have the right to dislike what they want.

I think one of the things that pissed some of my friends off though was also them writing GFriend off as girls who skip around in flowy dresses catering to "pervy old men" I didn't listen to the podcast but I know my friend was very upset by this statement along with them making fun of BTS's accents

Date: 2017-09-22 11:50 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] miwa201.livejournal.com
oh i didn't listen to the gfriend part, only what they said about bts. that's fucked up

i saw an apology about the taehyung thing, what was even said? (i skimmed the aj post & it wasn’t mentioned, idk.) from what i’ve read, ia that it’s overblown and now that criticism is watered down, esp. to please pop fans, it’s ridiculous. labels, and stans, can’t rally for validation and then get upset when it’s not totally positive... all across the board. chance’s ppl paid mtv to pull a not totally positive piece about him & honestly? this reminds me of that, so while making fun of jungkook’s accent + calling gfriend is pedo bait is a low blow (that’s not nuanced, not to mention casually racist), if there was due criticism fans should chill out

From the clippets at the source the girl (who I think was guesting) said she didn't like Tae's voice. That was all. She immediately followed it up with something like "I'm sorry. people are going to kill me for saying that" She said it in response to the other girl saying she hated when Jimin started songs.

idk if there was other things they said, because there were only small parts of it.

From: [identity profile] giriboy.livejournal.com
weird that you can't dislike ppl's voices now. i know i'm at least against the army majority (on omona) since i don't like taehyung's voice all that much so that seems waaay blown out of proportion. tbh, none of that seems off to me. i've listened to k-stop, regularly, before and the other girl—tina xu, i'm assuming, if the other girl was the one guesting—is usually pre. blunt in her dislike so that doesn't surprise me

yeah, i wish i had the opportunity to listen to it but out of all the things that were deemed ~* controversial, those aren't it

Date: 2017-09-22 03:44 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pourtant.livejournal.com
the one thing i find actually controversial is that comment about gfriend twirling their skirts for pervy old men or whatever and even with that it's more of an issue of tone and generalizing and them using it to dismiss the group, because lbr we all know cute girl groups do have that appeal for those people even though kpop fans would like to pretend it's not a thing

yeah, ia. i'm surprised they don't really edit the podcast, since it is fuse programming. the gfriend things definitely seems like it would've been edited out, had it been a published piece or whatever which is disappointing

Date: 2017-09-22 04:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pourtant.livejournal.com
yeah, i guess that's part of why it got such a huge reaction too, you kind of expect more from fuse (as opposed to like, some random podcast made by fans in their living room), but not only was the tone unprofessional but they also didn't think to edit it after the fact

I find the outrage over them joking about the way JK said that dude’s name odd because army were making the same jokes too

Date: 2017-09-22 02:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nekokonneko.livejournal.com
Yeah that was supremely hypocritical. I even saw one person say that when thry did it was ~with love~

Date: 2017-09-22 02:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] meggicchi.livejournal.com
yep, one of the girl in the podcast apologized on twitter and said she made the joke bc she saw it on an army video on youtube and army were like 'yes but it's an army joke and you're not an army!', lol so it's okay to mock him if you're a fan? totally missing the point smh.

Date: 2017-09-23 07:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cuteartichoke.livejournal.com
yep. I was shocked to see Asian Junkie defend this idea that ARMY did it with ~love~ while the people in the podcast were ~clearly mocking~. I was like...? It was pretty obvious they were echoing army stan twt's reaction to the whole Jungcook/Charlie Puss fiasco. Anyone who saw any different probably felt that way because they already didn't like them

also I'm starting to get tired of fans who think it's up to them to determine whether someone is a true "ARMY" or not. While I like certain songs on the album, overall, I didn't think it was /that/ great and have been told multiple times that I must not be a ~true~ army since I guess at one point rapmonster said this album is one meant especially for ARMY or something. I literally read a post saying that this album was made as a "test" to weed out fake ARMY from the real ones, as real ARMY would appreciate it for what it is, and ARMY who are just here for the hype would write it off.I'm like... if I'm just here for the hype I wouldn't have been a fan since their nugu days when their was literally no hype to be there for. Also I've noticed it's a lot of fans who literally got here during BST or a little bit before pushing the this idea the most which makes me even more confused.

The desperation for western validation from kpop Stan’s has never sat right with me so I guess they’re learning a lesson finally

I'm getting so much joy from this because fans have no one to blame but themselves for rolling on their backs for every single attention starved nobody gassing up BTS (THIS IS HOW THE CHAINSMOKER THING HAPPENED). Their over the top reaction and anger as a result of something so trivial that they only have themselves to blame for is just...absolutely delightful. K-pop christmas in September.

Agreed. When someone actually has good intentions armys drive them away. That's why they shouldn't meddle in either way. Bts are grown men they can decide who they want to work with. If it's the wrong decision they'll learn from it.

I didn't think the podcast was that bad, except for the borderline racist things that were thrown in here and there, other than that ppl are entitled to their opinion, even if those are flop opinions like not appreciating Vmin vocals.

Jeff didn't really do anything wrong, he didn't call his colleagues out but that would be a bit much. He did disagree with them at some points.

twitter stans are so exhausting with how they blow hot and cold on every little issue tbh

Btw, HER is ~95k away from being the best selling album of the year and it hasn't even been a week.

damn, my friend is in seoul now and asked if i wanted anything. i said already said no, but maybe i'll ask her to get me a copy. ... i've never bought 2 copies of an album before (and i dont even know what vers i'm getting from amazon so ensure 2 different vers). ugh. i dont really want 2 versions of the same album, but it's only like $20 and i want them to reach that goal so ???
