It's a common practice for junior groups to come to senior groups rooms and greet them, usually gifting them with the album they are currently promoting. Hyoyeon recently took to instagram to reveal that EXO were the only juniors to come and greet them and gift SNSD their new album. Many seniors have noted that junior groups don't come and greet them any longer, and plenty of fans are angered by the news.

I guess times have changed with the direction this is going, but I still find it rude. SNSD paved the way for your faves, and they aren't wrong about letting fame get to their heads as soon as they become popular lol

Are juniors preparing their signed albums after this? I don't think it's necessarily rude, just times changing; even so, it was so cute watching these interactions back in the day.

I think it's a matter of being bit disappointing for older gen idols that the tradition is wearing off, but who knows, since seniority is a big thing so maybe it is actually upsetting to some of them. I remember reading about Kim Tae Woo being legitimately pissed when a senior told him he had been the only one to greet him during a music show so he (Tae Woo) gathered the juniors, made them line up and bow to the guy.

Imo it is rude. There are still many rookie groups like KNK and A.C.E who go to sunbaes and hand out albums and do greetings (They've done this with APink and Sistar iirc) so it just kinda shows who's been trained better by their company. I can grant some leeway, like hey maybe they didn't have the album on hand to give out but that doesn't mean they can't take a minute to go bow and say hello.

And apart from the manners factor, it's stupid to not take advantage of the networking oppurtunity, imagine if Hyoyeon had posted about some rookie group on insta, that's a publicity boost for them they may not otherwise get.Plus a senior might remember you and that can benefit you down the line as well.

It was a common thing to do, a few years ago during second gen. Actually, when I say common I meant you did it bc seniority is a big thing in korean society, and it's no different in the idol industry. Especially with nugus, they'd bring their albums to the senior groups. Mnet and the other music shows usually broadcast it, or atleast the groups own tv shows would show them greeting their seniors.

It's worse since snsd are 10 years old and their accomplishments helped paved the way for other groups, specifically girl groups. So yeah, it's like saying you admire snsd but then don't even do something that's considered courteous and respectful

I mean if she was expecting it then it's obviously a thing that happens regularly, juniors greeting seniors etc. I also think some rookies were probably intimidated, but it really falls with the managers to have albums prepared and signed for seniors when u go to a show not really the rookies themselves. the managers know who else is booked and if you see snsd celebrating their 10th anni... maybe you should have something prepared.

I don't find it rude but I know it's definitely a thing that juniors are supposed to do. Especially since they pend basically all day at the broadcasting station.
I though it was basically a part of everyone's routine. You show up, do your prep stuff, greet your seniors, perform.
It's a bit shocking that it seems to not be happening since I remember reading about "scandals" and stuff for groups that they were considered rude because they didn't greet their seniors.

Hmmm I'm from America but like...in my family culture you respect people older than you by showing manners. If I don't greet my grandma she looks at me like I'm crazy lol But in a professional setting wouldn't it be expected to greet your seniors? Like my workplace is chill as fuck but we all still greet each other.

And even besides that I would think networking and having seniors have nothing but good things to say about you is great for your rep. I understand that SK seniority bs can get out of hand but when it comes to this easy greeting type of thing I don't see how that's a huge deal to go and greet your Sunbaes. Yeah. I sometimes find the seniority thing in SK to be really crazy. I remember reading an article where someone was like "Even if your senior is wrong, you can't tell them that they are" or how they can't refuse to do something if their senior asks them to do it, even if they're uncomfortable with doing it. I think one good example is drinking. Even if you don't drink you still have to go to their hwe shik's or else you'll basically be condemned. And if you go and tell them you don't drink, they'll still try to force you to drink. Like um what.

not to mention, given the large # of creepy assholes in the entertainment industry, if i were a girl group member, i wouldn't feel comfortable going to visit sunbae groups, esp male groups tbh

I wonder if also the rising tendency of people spending less time training also has to do with it? Most of the seniors trained for 4+ years which allows for a lot more time to understand the importance of etiquette when dealing with seniors at music shows, with PDs on variety shows, etc. Training time is decreasing (and then there's now the competitive shows that propel you to debut) so some of the rookies may not understand the culture. It's no excuse, but it could explain why it's not as ingrained.

It makes sense considering how scrutinized Soshi was for their manners, being juniors and a girl group (especially when their SM seniors were mostly boy groups with insane fandoms that treated them poorly for a while). I would be pissed too if I paid those dues.

going out of your way to give CDs seems like a lot to me (an English person), and perhaps people in the industry are starting to feel the same way? however, as many other people have mentioned, SNSD are top ranking and it's their 10th anniversary, not going to at least greet them feels really off

I personally feel like it'd be good if they all greeted each other and were on friendly terms, regardless of seniority, and didn't feel too pressured by the current system as well, like, you go around, greet the other groups, chat, hopefully be friends, and it's all good, no extra worry or unnecessary stress

I think they generally all greet each other, but because it's expected for juniors to greet seniors they tend to wait in their rooms so other groups know where to find them. But hierarchy is a really big deal in all of Korean culture- for example I have a Korean friend who's a few months but not a full year older than me and I still regret to her as unnie. It's mostly for practice reasons because she doesn't care but if we're in a larger group people are really offended on her behalf if I don't address her properly. It definitely seems like overkill sometimes if that's not what you're used to but I always defer to a Korea's opinion in situations like this.

I don't think new groups are arrogant, well maybe some of them are but I really doubt is all of them. I think it's just a nice tradition that got lost in time, plus I remember the time when snsd were rookies the industry was a lot smaller, everyone knew each other and I'm sure it was easier to acomodate time and place for greeting of senior, today with a new group debuting every five seconds it must be more difficult and not a priority, which knowing how important senior culture is in Korea, is not a good thing. I come from similiar culture. For me the senior-junior relationship supposed to be respectful and warm in general. But because some trash people play a power tripping game so it end up looks like forced/mandatory and tiring. And like other users mentioned, its good for your rep. You dont need to lick their feet or such, just being nice in general.

Kids these days need to learn their manners. It's basic respect. Plain and simple. I work in the medical field and in our hospital, we teach our medical interns to always greet their seniors. A simple hello or good morning/afternoon/evening would suffice. Better to greet a senior that waves you off or hardly acknowledges you rather than to be talked about as the intern who doesn't greet seniors.

I get why the senior idols are upset, but I think it's a good change. Handing out CDs is often a waste of money, and they get trashed or regifted. I mean, CDs aren't cheap. Also it'd be good for the greeting culture in SK to loosen up. A lot of idols (senior and junior) spend a ton of time doing nothing for their careers b/c they have to wait to greet the PDs of the music show even thought they've already done their stages when they could be greeting fans, going on other shows, or getting necessary rest.

Even though I come from a culture, who is also big on the senior and junior thing (I'm Japanese), I always found it weird that Kidols did that CD/album handing out thing. I mean, sure, greeting and showing respect to your seniors is something you should do (mutual respect is best!), but going from room to room to give everybody their new album, always sounded like a drag to me. What if these people are busy preparing for their performance? What if they would like some time for themselves before the show starts? What if they're really not interested in the album and will just let it gather dust somewhere or throw it away?

We don't have something like this in Jidol culture, plus, I think it's mostly the companies and/or the managers, who decide if idols give out albums/visit seniors in their rooms. I doubt that the idols themselves have much say in it.

i was wondering abt this w/ the japanese idol industry, tbh! i barely follow jpop (just one group, and even then i only listen to their music) so i don't know much about it but for the korean industry it seems like, very by company policy. i hear about the giving albums thing from, mostly, either: a) nugu groups, who need the promo, or b) sm groups. i know some ppl mentioned jyp/yg's policy for it are waaay different than sm groups so it just seems like a, idk, kinda silly thing to get all up in arms about. greeting your seniors i get (even tho in america we don't do the senior/junior thing like they do over there, or in japan) but the cd giving policy which is included in greeting is pretty ridiculous, imo
