Song: "They Never Know" by EXO
Album: EX`ACT - The 3rd Album
Composer: Paul 'MARZ' Thompson, MZMC, De-Capo Music Group, Jamil 'Digi' Chammas, Adrian Mckinnon, Tay Jasper, Levan Kali, Otha Vakseen' Davis III
Lyricist: 조윤경
Arranger: Paul 'MARZ' Thompson, De-Capo Music Group, Jamil 'Digi' Chammas

Q: Tell me about the birth of this song.
MZMC: I was at a song camp and I had this track that the SM A&R loved, but I couldn't get any songwriters to write to it. Objectively speaking, there was nothing special about the track at that time because it was still a sketch, but I guess the SM A&R saw potential. So, I kept telling my songwriters to write to it, and they'd say they would, and then never get around to it (laughs). They wanted to write to the tracks I had that they thought were hot. Finally, on the last day of the song camp, at like 4am, I was able to convince them to get in a room and finish the song.

Q: Was the song intended for EXO?
MZMC: At the time, Taemin's album was about to come out. So, it was actually intended for him. The song was fixed to be on Taemin's Press It - The 1st Album album, but later it got dropped and disappeared for like 8 months. So, recently I went to another song camp and, thinking that SM wasn't going to use the song, we wrote a completely new melody to the track. And literally a week after we finished the new version, SM called me and told me they wanted the original version for EXO (laughs). I felt so bad because I had just wasted the songwriter's time writing the new melody.

Q: This song created a bit of fanwar between EXO fans and BTS fans. Can you shed any light on that?
MZMC: I'd love to! So, producers often use what are called sound libraries. These libraries include different drum sounds, drum loops, synth loops, guitar loops, piano loops, etc. They're shared across the web for producers to use, for free, without having to credit or ask for permission from the original maker of that sound or loop. They're royalty free. So, if a drum sound or a loop is hot, they'll often get used by multiple producers. The electric piano loop that I used was from one of those sound libraries. Since I don't listen to every single Kpop song that gets released, I was unaware that BTS' song, 고엽 (Dead Leaves), had the same loop. A lot of fans think that both the producer of Dead Leaves and I sampled Blackbear's Deadroses. That's not the case. It just turned out that all three of us used the same loop from the same sound library.

I'm still surprised that people didn't know about the sound libraries. So many dumb arguments over it when there was an explanation about it already in the past.

Although what are the odds that the loop would get used three times, and twice in recent kpop releases which happened to belong to two of the hottest boy groups atm?

I'm still surprised that people didn't know about the sound libraries.

My impression over the years has been that your average Kpop fans knows very little about how songs get made, to put it bluntly, so it's not surprising at all to me. The concept of sampling or covering is foreign to most.

The libraries came up during cl's mtbd scandal so i think people do /know/ about them but since we're not often privy to the actual songmaking process, we might not realise how widespread they are.

I still find it funny that both BTS and EXO use the same loop in quite a short time, especially those two groups, it's like even unintentionally kpop draws drama in

The post-chorus bit in this track is like a throwback to the sort of sound that Craig David (bless him for making a comeback!!!) made it big with in the late 90s/early 00s. Just lovely.

really happy this has been cleared up now - to me, 고엽 and they never know (and deadroses for that matter) do not sound the same at all except for that loop and them both being great songs

i really love these behind the music posts though! so interesting to peek behind the curtains and being able to imagine a bit how these songs are created and with whom in mind!

I thought that this was pretty common knowledge about what happened.. especially when a third track popped up with the same loop. I was surprised to see all the commotion. I think the ONTD post had people saying BigHit was going to go bankrupt, lol.

i'm still a bit surprised that SM released an EXO song with the same sample as a BTS song....

Maybe they weren't even aware of BTS's song? It wasn't a title track or anything.

I had just accepted the explanation that Dead Leaves sampled Deadroses and Bighit probably paid for it. I don't know why certain malicious individuals had to jump to the conclusion that it was stolen. They did the same thing with the "fake gucci" thing

this just makes me wonder how many songwriters have used sound libraries tbh. i know taeyeon's "I" used one bc i have the same library. and the teaser (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqdEoLqnEeY) for secret's "talk that". t(ツ)_/¯

Too many song writers use libraries. It's cheap and easy and it doesn't require learning how to play an instrument or paying someone who knows how.

It's not surprising that 3 songs used the same loop. What's surprising is that there weren't 100 songs using that loop.

i feel you.

i also think blackbear's song and exo's sound a lot more similar. i know BTS used the same sound but it sound likes it has a different melody, imo.
