Song Mino
The first song to be released from WINNER’s new album is ‘PRICKED’, written by you. Is there a reason you chose Taehyun as the vocalist?
I thought he would sing emotional songs well. Taehyun has a remarkable talent in bringing out emotions through his tone when singing. The chorus is meant to be smooth and emotional, and I think Taehyun portrayed that well.
In the teaser, you acted out a kiss scene. Have you now taken the sexy role within the group?
My personality is usually bright and playful, but I’m serious when I work. I worked hard because it was a part given to me (laughter).
You’re very different from your character I saw in < Show Me the Money 4 >. You seem much more comfortable and gentle.
It’s not that hip hop itself is a scary genre and you have to act strong, but SMTM is a battle program in which contestants are put against each other, so unavoidably there is an overall psychological pressure. Unconsciously, I was mentally worn out so I think I got a lot of stress from it. When I cut my blond-dyed hair, I was surprised to see that half my hair was grey. Compared to then, I am much more relaxed. Now, as WINNER, I want to run free.


Kang Seungyoon
How did you spend the last year and five months?
I worked hard to prepare. Before the new track was released, I couldn’t sleep even one second. I was nervous and excited.
Do you ever want to do a solo project outside of the team?
Like you have to sharpen a knife before using it, even though I have ambitions to show the world who I am, I am waiting for the perfect time. When WINNER gains the trust that “You can trust them to make good music,” then I want to release a solo album. Because then, more people will lend their ears to my music.
WINNER members each have a distinct personality. I’m curious about the process in which each member voices and listens to opinions.
It becomes really easy after you begin to accept one another. The problem disappears when each member clearly accepts other opinions, and gathers everyone’s individual strengths. A complete unified agreement isn’t really our style, nor do I think it would work.
If you were to make a subunit like BIGBANG’s GD & T.O.P, with who and what concept would you want to do it?
I think I can do it with each and every member. With one member a specific style, and another member another concept; it just plays itself out. I have a lot of ambitions.


Nam Taehyun
How did you spend the last year?
During the long hiatus, I studied to improve parts from when we were active that I had regrets over. I invested a lot of time learning guitar, exercised hard. I contemplated a lot and found a lot of music to listen to; it was a training time to try to better myself.
When you say current music trend, I feel like you would find a lot of hiphop references, but I’m intrigued that it’s Blues for you.
When you look at the roots of hip hop, you find jazz, blues, and other Black culture music. Our company deals with a lot of hip hop, and there’s a lot of good hip hop artists in the company, so to stand out I have to find something new instead of diving into the same hip hop (laughter).
You featured in < Late Night Restaurant > and now you started Park Shin Yang’s new variety program < Actor School >. What rating would you give your acting on a scale from 1 to 10?
Of course, as of now, it’s only a 1. But like music, it’s important to see what I can learn in acting. I think acting is making a situation seem realistic on camera. More than that, acting takes away a lot of the habitual fear I get when trying new things.


Lee Seunghoon
It’s known that you thought of being a choreographer before debut plans arose.
I don’t think it fits to say that I have an interest in dancing or that I’m good at dancing. Even from childhood, dancing was the sole thing I could do. Now my skill field is slightly wider, I think I want to continuously produce more content. Choreography is something made from nothing, anyway. For example, it can become clothes or a character, sentences or a story. I think I like the process of creating a picture in my head then making something out of nothing, and that might be why I would become a choreographer.
On stage you seem energetic and bubbly, and flexible like an animal, but I think your actual personality is different.
That’s a facade I wear on stage (laughter). In a way, I think I act self-love. I don’t do monitering a lot, and I get embarrassed seeing myself like that.
I heard you were interested in fashion.
Because I don’t have the looks (laughter)?, I talk well and distinguish myself through fashion. When I was young, aside from dancing, I would reform my clothes, look for not well-known brands in the community, and save eating money to buy vintage clothes. Now that I just wear clothes that my stylist hands to me, I think my interest has diminished a bit. Because there’s a distance between my group’s style and the style I enjoy, and because I’m used to being dressed by someone else.
Something you want to earn this year?
Before I go to sleep, I constantly think in my head, I wish I could be happy.


Kim Jinwoo
How are the vocal parts in the album split up?
The five of us have been with each other for a long time so we know which parts each person is good at. Then the producing members like Seungyoon, Taehyun, and Mino make a song, they split it up themselves based on who they think would best fit each part.
Your training period was the longest. What was the energy that helped you endure that time?
My age played a part, but there was also a desperation that this was the only path for me. I was right in front of a steep precipice. Time went on but there was nothing, and I became discouraged as trainees left and new came in. Then one day, Taehyun and I got to stand as back dancers at a YG Family concert. We danced behind 2NE1, JINUSEAN, BIGBANG sunbaes, and the cheering of the fans woke me up mentally. I thought to myself, the cheering feels so good even when I’m in the back, I wonder how ecstatic it would be if I was the one singing and dancing, and the cheering was for me. I had a small taste of the appeal of being a singer then, and I got goosebumps. That experience really helped me endure the hard times.
You must have achieved your dream, then.
I have, but I get the feeling there’s more to the dream. If my goal initially was size 1~2, now it’s exceeding 3~4, I feel. I want to perform in front of even more people, and develop personally and sing by myself as well.
You are the eldest in the group, but I don’t get that vibe.
It doesn’t matter if I don’t have the eldest vibe or the members don’t treat me like the eldest. If the members make a big mistake or something, I talk to them, but there’s nothing like hitting and stuff (laughter).

Organ, string, electronic guitar and many other instruments form harmony. This six-eight time blues pop song gives glamorous yet acoustic feeling. This song is addictive and simple. The truthful lyrics stand out, as it contains the theme of loneliness which anyone could have experienced. Nam Tae Hyun personally participated in producing and arranging the song and raised its quality.

02. 센치해 (SENTIMENTAL)
This song is a lyrical minor pop song that projects WINNER’s gentle voices. Nam Tae Hyun produced the song, expressing the sentimental feelings with witty lyrics.

03. 철없어 (IMMATURE)
Cheerful rhythm, rock feeling guitar with unique synth sound fill the song along with rhythmical raps on addictive melodies.

04. 좋더라 (I’M YOUNG)
The plaintive ballad with lyrical electronic piano sound and soft voices forms harmony. Nam Tae Hyun produced the song and expressed his true feeling towards love as if he is writing a diary.

05. 사랑가시 (PRICKED)
“사랑가시” is an ENTRY SINGLE that started off WINNER’s 2016 PROJECT “EXIT MOVEMENT”. It is a medium-tempo ballad song that consists of sweet and lyrical guitar riff with Song Min Ho & Nam Tae Hyun’s unique and doleful emotions.

Hoon's interview made me a little sad (Mostly because I can relate to doing things/ choosing a career because it was the only thing I excelled out and wishing for happiness). I hope 2016 will be a good year for him!

Hoon's interview was rly sad. You can tell in their interviews how much they've matured but also how melancholic they've become. I wish the best for them this yr!

Great post, op! Thanks! I always enjoy reading their interviews. The hiatus served to be productive for them although it left them in a seemingly despondent tone. Hoonie's interview was so sad. I can kind of identify myself with him. I'm a jolly person but when alone with my thoughts I get really serious and worry a lot. Maybe it's a capricorn thing?? Lol.

i like the *idea* of this concept and the teaser vid and what not, but i am NOT.FEELING. the design of this album.
my deluxe version of s/s 2014 is like a prized possession and these two album options are not giving me a feeling of needing to buy one. i was worried they'd be shitty after it was revealed that it'd be a series of minis instead of one full album and (for now) it seems like i was right to be worried.

i love winner interviews. they always have such interesting answers. my heart goes out to hoon. it's great to be making a living out of something you're good but it can be such a struggle to get to that point. plus having your passion become work sucks since it can cause stress/anxiety rather than releasing it
