Date: 2015-12-22 06:11 am (UTC)first of all they're doing military service because its mandatory for all korean men , so they get paid like any regular korean citizen (as far as i know army forces are always paid/managed by the goverment .... so sm doesn't have to much to do in this)
but its consider partially a volunteer activity because to enter police different divisions you need to pass various exams, donghae had other options like going to public service (like heechul and yesung did) or to regular military service (like sungmin, shindong & eunhyuk are doing) but he wanted to join this unit so he did police deparment exams
seems like this division not only perform on schools or police festivals , they also do charity work (like going to hospitals and nursing homes) just last week they performed on asam pediatric oncology hospital
but its true this unit is special for dancers, actors or entertainers in general (its not an accident all of them can actually dance and sing lol) before his injury actor choi jin hyuk was ready to join this unit and fans recognized some musical actors on smooth criminal facams

Date: 2015-12-22 02:13 pm (UTC)Choi Jin Hyuk was supposed to serve in that unit (and said some dumb things like he always wanted to do musicals etc like it was another gig for him not duty). He "changed his mind" aka his agency made him join normal active duty instead. It was announced some time before his actual enlistment. Choi Jin Hyuk got discharged few months ago because he messed up his knee big time. Due to severe damage to the cartilage in his knee, he received cartilage stem cell transplant surgery on his left knee. The army decided it would be hard to serve any longer bc of long term rehabilitation etc and gave him disability discharge notice. He wanted to carry on serving after that surgery and supposedly it hit him hard.
Promotional unit is less demanding physically than active duty, it would made sense for him to serve (considering his knee problem) there...

Date: 2015-12-22 07:52 pm (UTC)maybe he wants to save his reputation ... after that "celebrity unit" incident seems like korean netizens have the worst image about celebrities going (or skiping) the army .... you see articles and people still gets surprised to know they actually do regular service and train without special treatments
he's an actor tho ... so maybe the hit to his image won't be that bad

Date: 2015-12-22 09:40 pm (UTC)There's that messy rapper Swings who was exempted from army (mental issues). After he applied to KATUSA (Korean Augmentation To the United States Army) and got rejected, seems like he had to enlist in "nomal" army despite past exemption? Before enlisting it felt like he's saying goodbye like... forever? Idk. Few months ago he also was discharged early, reason being the fact he is unfit for the duty. He posted on his FB that he's been receiving treatment since he was young for various mental illnesses such as obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression, and bipolar disorder.
Just an example of a celebrity that didn't had to go to army but did anyways :)

Date: 2015-12-22 10:17 pm (UTC)But Swings mess was really weird to me, like if you are officially exempt because of health issues, which basically mean you are unfit for military service how can you serve voluntary, especially if person have well documented mental illness, do you really want to give a gun to a guy who hear voices in his head, were is the logic? Korean compulsory service puzzles me a lot from what I read about it.

Date: 2015-12-22 05:31 pm (UTC)So now they can do active or public service like every other Korean guy out there. Public service is basically kind of desk job, seen as an easier thing to do so now after the shitstorm with that celeb unit and all the bad press that followed celebs only do public service if they really have to aka health issues when they can not pass the medical exam bc if healthy person chooses it he's looked upon badly/image downfall etc ("normal" guys are also picked on when they do public serv, it's not like it's only celeb thing, but people tend to think that celebs already have easier life generally so the buttheart is big)
Donghae is another case bc he's not doing public service, but it's also not average active duty (but still active) bc he's serving for police department. He had to pass special exams before enlisting there, it's not like he can sing/dance so they took him just like that. He had to do what every guy that want to serve in police had to do, but bc he has additional abilities aka singign/dancing he ended up in police promo department
So yeah, now generally majority of idols do actual military service.

Date: 2015-12-22 05:37 pm (UTC)we know most idols postpone enlistment the most they can, so we wont see any idols in their prime (let's say exo, big bang or shinee) going into army until very last minute .... that means when they turn 29-30 lol
