EXID-radio

EXID has revealed their shocking secret to how they stay thin.

On November 26, EXID visited SBS‘s “Kim Chang Ryeol’s Old School” radio studio as guests.

During the broadcast, the members are asked to share some dieting tips and tricks. To this, Hani replies, “I don’t want to recommend this method but we ate just enough to not die. We ate really little.”

Junghwa adds, “We worked hard [to lose weight] since it was our comeback.” LE says, “I have a lot of hidden fat. I really can’t resist eating. I need to stop eating,” and laughs.

Fans who have come across this article are worried for the members’ health now, and left comments like “They’re already thin ):,” “Life is hard,” and “They have fat to lose?”

Meanwhile, EXID had their comeback on November 18 with their new digital single “Hot Pink.”

Rather than put the blame on EXID for talking about it, I'd like broadcast people to stop asking about it in an attempt to glorify weight loss regardless of if its necessary or excessive. Most of the comments seemed really worried/sympathetic to the fact that it's normal for idols to just starve themselves...why?

Let's stop writing articles about every time some skin gets pushed out of a tight outfit or someone has cellulite or their thighs shake. This is literally good for no one involved -- the fans nor the idols themselves.

I don't think they are asking it in an attempt to glorify it though...
I think they are asking because it's a topic of interest to a lot of people/listeners.

I think rather than just not talking about when idols have cellulite and whatnot, another part of the problem is that people call idols 'goddesses' and 'queens' and puts them on ridiculous pedestals, causing idols to go on these extreme diets so they can be considered pretty and making the general public want to look like them, and know how they look like that.

Why is it a topic of interest though? Bc of the general obsession with people's weight and weight loss by any means.

I think that plays a part in this too, that theres an expectation for idols to be perfect but dont forget that that also means theyre projecting an ideal which is why I say its a larger scale problem.

I think that the talk about flaws is just the other side of the coin though. I don't think you can have a culture where people are called flawless and goddesses, these really extreme ideals, without naturally having the flip side - where their flaws are pointed out, even if they are small.
Both sides are really not exactly healthy, even if one feels positive and happy.

they never ask male idols either. like i was shocked how much weight vixx dropped for this comeback but nobody is saying anything about it. yk if they were female idols knetz would prob be praising them and we'd get 1341243324 articles on their diets or some shit

op can you put this under a cut? it's upsetting enough to read it without having a bad relationship with food.

I'm so angry that they were made to go through this and that they think things like they have 'hidden fat'. UGH WHY

i thought people like hani's fancam because of her curvy body?

That's what I thought too. But a similar thing sorta happened with HYosung as well. People were thirsty for her glamourous full figure (not exactly full but def fuller than your usual female idol) and she was getting a lot of offers but then she suddenly went on a diet and lost a lot of weight. I think the pressure to be thin is just something you get staying in an industry full of unrealistically skinny people. It could eat away your confidence if you constantly compare yourself with others.

oh yes you're right, even if people keep appraising you, looking at lots of other people skinnier than you didn't help

This is actually dreadful, like wtf? "I need to stop eating"? jesus christ

the fact that they felt forced to go to this extreme is upsetting tbh

this is upsetting!!!

i saw exid when they performed at Korea Uni in May 15 and seriously all the members (minus Hani, at the time) looked so thin in person...

Hani impressed me at that time cuz she actually marginally thicker legs than her fellow members *_*

This is irresponsible. These questions need to stop being asked and answered if it cannot be done so properly.

This is indeed really upsetting and irresponsible, but I don't think shoving these kinds of topics under the rug is the answer. I do agree that people shouldn't be asking them these questions with the intent to praise them for basically starving themselves, but EXID has some responsibility as well. They have fans who look up to them who will follow their example.

this is fucked and i wish exid hadnt responded so lightly but i guess they cant exactly get all serious on a radio show. knowing stuff like this is why i feel uncomfortable when female idols joke about how obsessed w food they are

Every time. Every time someone speaks about their unhealthy "diet" aka starving themselves, I can't help but imagine how damaging it could be to listeners. The culture is already messed up as it is, it's really stupid to flaunt your starvation on broadcast, celebrities can really mess a person up by doing so.

From: [identity profile] staaan.livejournal.com
ughhhh it's bs that they even have to answer these questions but i wish they'd put more emphasis on how detrimental starving is aside from a quick "do not recommend"

i don't think it's the answer to blame exid, they're victims. i mean listen to them: LE says, “I have a lot of hidden fat. I really can’t resist eating. I need to stop eating,” and laughs. sounds like straight up body dysmorphia. most idols will be extremely damaged mentally in regards to food. at least hani was honest. djs don't care to ask them for their thoughts on their diets, they just know a lot of ppl will be interested in idols' methods, it's a hot topic. if idols go into the truth of what their eating is like and how they feel about it on air, i imagine that would be quite hard to do emotionally and i doubt it's allowed as they'd just be throwing their company under the truck. but what i think a lot of people don't realise is that they are being honest. they're not romanticising. these are the words of those with disordered eating, who really do believe they're too fat, that they're doing the right thing, that they have to diet like this, that that's what they deserve.

the best thing people can do is comment disapprovingly on these articles and threaten to take away their support but so long as there are assholes out there who criticize idols' appearances, especially males who are usually the group of fans companies want to please, i fear idols will always be abused like this.

Seriously. Not to mention if they didn't already have these issues on their own, then their sudden popularity no doubt brought severe pressure down from their company. It's a cycle. Fans comment on weight. Companies make idols diet. Fans comment on weight. Repeat.

I'm surprised by some of these comments. I thought it was common knowledge that most female idols are hella pressured by their companies to do these dangerous diets. And I thought it was a common theory (or even fact?) that companies encourage these questions about their diets in order to make people support them more. Ugh.

yup. it's weird people are here both condemning these "diets" /and/ the people talking about them- the victims /of/ them.

I don't know about the rest of the members but Hani was asked about her 9kg (?) loss and she said she doesn't recommend it to anyone and only did it to lose weight quick for their comeback. She also said she's back to eating normally. Her normal eating habit during promos might be the 1 meal a day thing though, she mentioned it during Running Man.

LE is super super skinny, but I do identify with what she said. When someone says to me "You're so thin!" my knee jerk reaction is almost always some form of "What? Where?" "Omg my thighs though!" or "I have all this fat too" or "I eat so much". Literally ALL of my girlfriends would say the same kind of things. Is it an Asian thing?

From: [identity profile] a-cheshire-grin.livejournal.com
Is it an Asian thing?

No, it's a woman's thing.

I'm from Asia (Japan) and while the pressure to be thin here is definitely stronger, it's not very different in other parts of this world. I studied in Europe for a few years and a lot of girls/women over there also struggle with eating disorders and the way women are portrayed in media doesn't help.

9kg?? that sounds very dangerous. :( glad to hear she's back to her normal eating habits, but seriously, that shit is gonna fuck you up in the long run. it's really sad how no one looks out for their health and well-being.

they already said the do not recommend this method... so i'll just repeat that.

not even gonna bother reading it, but i'm with everyone here -- i wish questions like that would stop already. it's sickening how extreme dieting seems normalized. it just sets an impossible and unhealthy standard for women.

it also makes me depressed that fit idols like sistar are more of the exception rather than the rule; even then, soyu(?) admitted to doing extreme diets before.

It's so upsetting... poor girls. Poor us too. We're all loosing from these unrealistic body expectations. I sometimes struggle from following too many girls groups... I can't imagine what it's like to be in there.
And then you have girls like Arin from Oh My Girl diagnosed with an eating disorder... (at least in her case the company seems to have reacted faster than usual).
It's the same debate for every diet article, it's upsetting and depressing because you know that the next girl group will be asked the same question and will answer with a diet just as damaging for their health.

I hate this. I hate how women are always constantly pressured to look in a certain way and if you're not you're considered ugly or some space alien or something...

What's worse is that when it gets to your parents' head that skinny = beautiful they'll constantly crack jokes about how you're getting fat and that you'll never find an s/o like that and get mad when you answer back even though it's already eating away your self-esteem bit by bit :(

It's disgusting that they are even asked this
And no it isn't good to 'show both sides' if the topic you're discussing is difficult like this and isn't spoken about in a safe responsible way
Seeing both sides would be good if the DJ had actually tried to bring up a conversation about wider societal pressures, eating disorders and the horrendous beauty standards that women are under but instead this was just a nosy ass gossip question and unfortunately EXID answered honestly but not responsibly

I'm not saying they should do the Kardashian thing and pretend they are healthy but instead it would be better they just say it's nobody's business or encourage fans to eat healthy instead of detailing their own diets

they say that but the moment those girls show an ounce of fat in their bodies they are all gonna be on their throats
