Korean reporter criticizes Jaejoong for wearing luxury watch to event

Although he’s currently in the military, JYJ‘s Jaejoong seems to be unable to stay away from being criticized.
After making a mistake while singing the national anthem of South Korea, and then wearing the flag upside down on his uniform, the JYJ member was spotted wearing a luxury watch worth about $160,000 USD to an event. A reporter expressed disapproval at Jaejoong, noting that he should not be wearing such a luxurious accessory while he’s serving at the lowest rank. The article has been very controversial, with netizens supporting both sides of the argument.

[+1335, – 455] He was wearing it during an event outside the army. How is that wrong? He bought that with his hard earned money. There are actual criminals out there living off of money earned illegally go after them not celebrities.

I thought the netz were pretty sympathetic about the lyric mistake? A lot of them were commenting about how visibly nervous he was. The flag was a clear mistake, but he rectified it before the actual event. Maybe they need to have it sewn instead of just a patch.

Could just be a cultural difference, but it seems normal to 'dress-up' when going to a special/formal event. Like I'm poor AF, but on the rare occasion that I go to the ballet or some kind of 'arts' performance, I wear my nicest stuff. Not to flaunt wealth (most of it was gifted to me), but to show respect and appreciation for how nice the performance is.

You don't wear a trashbag and ripped jeans to the opera to look humble. That would be disrespectful to the event/venue.
Jaejoong happens to be rich AF so his version of 'dressing-up' is going to be $$$ by default.

Feel free to take a dump on him if he actually does some shady/illegal stuff during his service.
But this is just totally ridiculous from my perspective.

Next time he's seen in public he should wear a sundial on his wrist.

I /kinda/ get it because ROK soldiers are meant to be living a hard-ass lifestyle and seeing someone flaunt a luxury good would seem unfair. They're not even allowed to have cell phones during their active duty time (unless they're in the KATUSA program; then they're under U.S. Army rules). I don't care personally, but I get where that comes from.

As for the other goof-ups - that's just a private being a private and should absolutely be expected.
