Article: 'What to do' with Danwon High School classrooms with new incoming freshman class¨

Danwon High School is facing issues with figuring out what to do with the classrooms of the victims as a new freshman class prepares to enter high school. Some are demanding that the classrooms be preserved as a memorial or at least create a separate memorial room, which won't be possible in the time they have until the new school year.

1. [+1,190, -215] It's really unfortunate that such young friends had to die in an accident like that but... is all of this necessary? The country has already compensated for their deaths with money... why are these kids being treated like they were freedom fighters? You can't turn the school into a memorial museum... why insist on preserving the classrooms?

2. [+1,089, -141] Even when our own parents away, we clean out their rooms after the funeral is over. Enough with this... if they're going to keep the classrooms empty, just close down the school altogether. Why should the new class be forced to study in a shrine?

3. [+1,065, -58] It's upsetting if you think about the victims but it's time that they shared the space with their future incoming juniors

4. [+92, -68] Enough's enough, isn't it? They preserved the space for two years, let the incoming class make use of it now. They can open a memorial elsewhere.

5. [+74, -15] How can parents demand that the classrooms be preserved empty like that? They should take the compensation money they received and make their own memorial elsewhere. The country has done so much for the survivors of the accident by sending them to good colleges and supporting their tuition financially.

6. [+49, -36] Like the best replies say, it's an unfortunate situation all around but the living must continue living! Are they going to be responsible if the school gets less students wanting to attend because of them? A school is no place for entire rooms of memorials to b held in. Think of the children for once. Acting like this won't make your dead child come back to life.

7. [+44, -29] The parents really want to keep all 10 classrooms preserved as a memorial.........? Might as well just tear down the school and start fresh with a new name.

8. [+34, -24] How can they demand that the school preserve 10 classrooms? Just turn the school into a memorial at that point.

9. [+28, -3] Let the living live... clean out the classrooms and open them to the new freshmen. The high school cannot be a memorial museum. Their deaths are unfortunate but you can't let this carry on for so long.

10. [+27, -16] I think the parents need to be more considerate of the school's stance... the kids need a place to study ㅠ..

:/

I think they should open a memorial somewhere, and let the classrooms be used as classrooms.

IA with netizens. The classrooms should be opened back up, but I also think a plaque of some sort should be at the school because it was such a big tragedy. At my high school there are several plaques and areas for faculty and students who've passed.

I feel bad for the parents and I may be wrong, but I"m thinking that the empty classrooms are not the place the parents are going to mourn/remember their children. Or at least I hope there are more memorable places for them to go to.

Do they really want their children's memories and legacy to be an empty classrooms? New students aren't going to look at those rooms and be inspired or remember the deceased (kids really don't seem to care unless it's about them)

Better to reopen the rooms for the new students and create a different memorial like a garden or something.

As a parent myself, I'd rather have other students able to learn where my child did. A memorial should be set up on campus but classrooms should not be a memorial.

my schools have often had some kind of little wooded/pond area and even something called a peace garden. it would be nice if they created an area like that as a memorial on the grounds. the classrooms need to be used again now.

i don't know but leaving things exactly as they were even years after someone dies seems like it could hinder the process of healing and carrying on with life.

seems like you wouldn't be able to properly move on with having everything still remaining intact.
earlier this year my school lost 5 students in a wreck and last week a garden and plaque was created and dedicated to them.
there needs to be a process of recovery and moving on otherwise you'll never get better.

I also feel like they should set up a school memorial and let the classrooms be used, but saying 'the parents should just take their money and deal with it' makes it clear that anyone who says something like that has never lost anyone they cared about.

I can understand both sides of this. Honestly though, if I was an incoming freshmen, I would hate to be in one of those classrooms. I wouldn't be able to concentrate. If it was economically feasible, I'd be all for the building an entirely new school/hall. I know it's illogical though.

I was thinking about Danwon today, especially since the son of my friend's friend died because of the Sewol sinking. It took them two weeks to ID his body and he lay in the gymnasium, unidentified while his poor father went back and forth trying to look for him and they kept telling him that no body had been found, which gave him false hope. Come to find out he was one of the first set of bodies they recovered. I remember 2014 well for that. It was a horrible time.

As for the classrooms, I believe it's time to open them up and let the kids used them. There will already be an ominous presence in the classrooms as it is. But as some of the K-Netizens said; life is for the living, and no matter how callous it sounds, these students need to use these classrooms. It will help everyone move on. But they should hold an official memorial every year so no one ever forgets about it.
