Im Siwan Wants to Look Forward Instead of Feeling Pressured by Success of “Misaeng”

ZE:A‘s Im Siwan, who earned praise for his realistic performance on tvN’s hit drama “Misaeng,” says he does not feel pressured by the success of the drama, but rather the opposite.
On December 26, the star sat down with news outlet MBN for an interview, during which he talked about the public’s expectations for his next project. He said, “I am often asked if I feel pressured about choosing my follow-up project.”
“When the movie ‘The Attorney‘ turned out well, I sometimes thought that [my character] Jin Woo became an obstacle to me. However, one good thing about meeting seniors is that you get to break free of such illusions,” the idol said, revealing that support from his sunbaes helped him lessen the pressure of future acting projects.
“After ‘The Attorney,’ I have not felt pressured about my other work. ‘The Attorney’ and ‘Misaeng’ are not walls to be climbed over, but instead, they are experiences that I have to leave behind. I don’t have to be influenced by them for my next project. For my next project, it will be enough if I go with my guts, and if it doesn’t work out, I will just have to accept that,” Im Siwan shared his mature thoughts on the dilemma of every successful actor.
When asked to comment on him usually depicting the pitiful and emotional characters, Im Siwan said, “It’s not like I haven’t acted cheerful roles, but I do think pity has become my trademark,” but added, “I am trying to break out of that box as I get older and gain experience.”
Kang Sora Sheds Tears during Interview: “I Don’t Think I Can Meet a Project like ‘Misaeng’ Again”

Actress Kang Sora shed tears during an interview she recently had regarding her drama “Misaeng.”
“This is the first time I entrusted myself to the project without any greed. There wasn’t anything in the script that didn’t make sense to me, so I only had the ‘pleasant’ worry of how to act out the role. I chose this role because I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it if it wasn’t now, and I wasn’t expecting the reactions to be so great. I felt like all my difficult times until now were all paid off at once.”
Kang Sora’s character in “Misaeng,” Ahn Young Yi, was a talented intern with a lot of potential who struggled against the patriarchal system. To study her role, Kang Sora even tried going to a corporate workplace.
During the interview, she talked about how she kept her hair long, as opposed to the original webtoon character, who had her hair short. “In the webtoon, she has short hair, but I chose long hair for the drama. In the flashback sequence, she has short hair, and it represents Young Yi’s desire to be acknowledged by her father. Her having long hair now represents that she has cut ties with her father. Young Yi seems perfect, almost surreally so, but she’s bad at interpersonal relationships and you can say that it’s because of her father. She had a lot of wounds on the inside.”
Im Siwan Says He and Kwanghee Are Not Jealous of Each Other

Im Siwan has elaborated on fellow ZE:A member Kwanghee’s perceived jealousy of him.
During a media day at a music store in Mapo, Seoul on December 26, Siwan stated, “Kwanghee always says he’s jealous of me on TV, but he’s really just trying to be funny.”
“He has nothing to be jealous of,” Siwan continued. “Kwanghee and I both recognize that we are on different paths and have different goals, so there is no jealousy between us.” He also added, “we congratulate each other when we win at award shows, too. We don’t envy one another.”
Siwan appeared on the popular tvN drama “Misaeng,” which portrayed him as Jang Geu Rae, a failed professional baduk (go) player who is thrust into the real world and must find a job. The series ended successfully, pulling in 8.2 percent viewership after starting at 1.6 percent.
Kang Ha Neul Is Still Star-Struck When He Sees Celebrities

Actor Kang Ha Neul appeared on SBS PowerFM radio show “Cultwo Show” on December 29 and shared anecdotes about hit tvN drama “Misaeng.”
During the “Neighborhood Hyungs” corner he was asked about his relationship with Im Siwan. Kang Ha Neul replied, “It was weird to see Im Siwan. It’s been seven years since I debuted, but I still get star-struck when I see celebrities.”
Kang Ha Neul received good reviews for his depiction of new employee Jang Baek Ki, protagonist Jang Geu Rae’s (Im Siwan) rival, in “Misaeng.”
The actor revealed, “Before the final episode of ‘Misaeng,’ I drank soju by myself. At first it didn’t hit me, but I got sentimental thinking back to when I first met [my character] Jang Baek Ki and Jang Baek Ki now.”
Im Siwan: “I Didn’t Just Want the Jang Geu Rae Role, I Needed It”

Actor Im Siwan spoke about his thoughts on his lead role as Jang Geu Rae in tvN’s hit drama, “Misaeng” in a press conference.
“As a man who had been living the character of Jang Geu Rae in reality, I was really thrilled when I saw the synopsis for the series. I didn’t just want the role – I needed it,” said Im Siwan. “I felt like I couldn’t live without having played this role, and even if the series was a bust, I would’ve been satisfied just for having the chance to meet Jang Geu Rae.”
Im Siwan had a great experience developing Jang Geu Rae, and his enthusiasm was captured on camera as he acted out his role. Although he had a lot of fun with the character, he didn’t expect the character would grab the hearts of thousands of viewers.
“A lot of the viewers held Jang Geu Rae in high esteem, and that’s when I started to feel the pressure,” admitted Im Siwan.
Much of the audience felt a likeness for the show, mainly because it the series truly reflected the life of an office worker and the problems that go along with it. The last episode was aired on December 20 and it had the drama’s highest viewer ratings. The scene where Jang Geu Rae and Oh manager (Lee Sung Min) chased down an adversary in Jordan was a “fantasy present to the viewers” according to Im Siwan.
Many of the viewers thought it was something like a scene out of the “Bourne Trilogy” movies. They even nicknamed Jang Geu Rae as “Bourne Geu Rae.”
ZE:A′s Kwang Hee Confesses He Hasn′t Watched Any of Im Si Wan′s Dramas

Talking about the craze over Im Si Wan at Kwang Hee′s appearance, MC Shin Dong Yeob teased Kwang Hee, asking, "Have you watched the dramas Im Si Wan appeared in?"
Kwang Hee replied, "I′ve never even seen one. But even though I didn′t watch it, ratings came out really well."
"I was really jealous for awhile that I couldn′t express it, but I want to do exactly the same as Si Wan. I want to be in a movie with over a million viewers and appear in a drama where I′m an office employee."
Kwang Hee then added, "But as a member of the same group, I′m also very proud of him."
The episode will air on January 3.

"When he′s resting, I get a lot of calls saying it′s really hard. I don′t know why he calls me when he′s struggling, but because we live close, he says things like, ′Let′s eat′ and ′I want to drink."
Kim Jae Joong added, "I recently ate with Shin Seung Hwa hyung, Lee Yoon Mi nuna, and Shorry hyung. Once I do a project together, I continously contact them and meet. I don′t think we really talk about work during that time."

ZE:A’s Im Si Wan Talks Going Crazy about Acting in Drama ‘Misaeng’

“Everyone was crazy about acting.”
ZE:A’s Im Si Wan expressed his affection towards the cast and staff members he worked with for the tvN drama Misaeng.
During the media day event that took place on December 26 in a restaurant in Mapo-gu, Im Si Wan said, “During the past four months of filming Misaeng, everyone including the actors and staff members were crazy about acting. That kind of atmosphere made me think that I must work harder.”
He continued, “At first I had the attitude of just enjoying it but slowly, I began to think that I must survive. I felt a lot of weight and responsibility to show something as ‘Jang Geu Rae.’”
In Misaeng, Im Si Wan acted as the contracted worker Jang Geu Rae. Leaving behind his title as an idol singer, he caught attention with his stable acting ability. His passionate acting led to an impressive viewership rating and Misaeng earned enthusiastic interest to the point of being called a ‘national drama.’
About having taken a reward vacation to Cebu along with the Misaeng cast and staff members, Im Si Wan said, “Like the poem ‘Be Drunk’ by Charles Baudelaire, we were always drunk,” adding, “Manager Ha (Jeon Seok Ho) hyungnim shouted, ‘We must always be drunk.’ The atmosphere was really good and for most actors, it was their first time taking a reward vacation so it was enjoyable and rewarding.”
Finally he said, “I lived as ‘Jang Geu Rae’ for four months. As soon as I received the synopsis, I felt the sense of duty to absolutely do it , instead of thinking that I want to do it,” and added, “The viewership rating is not necessarily the scale of success but I think it’s fortunate that the results came out good. I would like to thank all the cast and staff members who I worked with.”

And that was a play,” and shared his thoughts on returning to the play stage and determination to pull off all-night practices.
Meanwhile, Kang Ha Neul’s comeback play Harold & Maude will begin on January 9 at National Theatre of Korea.
