10asia Magazine - 10 + Star BTS Interview

Unknowingly it’s already been two years since they debut. Telling the tale of teenagers’ dreams, happiness and love, wanting to play their own lovers, and giving out a warning to not test their feelings. Last June, they debuted in the music industry as Bangtan Boys with a hip hop style. They use their unique style that differentiates themselves from other idols to become an idol group that cannot and will not be replaced. This August they released their first full-length album ‘Dark & Wild,’ demonstrating the thoughts and troubles of those in their 10’s and 20’s. They are showing Bangtan Boys’ transition as youths to real men. They once again raised the bar for rap and vocal talent, and once again proved their outstanding musical talents. People are starting to notice and look forward to the 7-member group Bangtan Boys that is comprised of Rap Monster, Suga, Jin, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook. Exactly how much growth ‘seeds’ is hidden behind the ‘Sonyeon’ in their names? Besides, everyone also wishes to know how long this seed that blooms dazzling flowers will go through a period of ‘red-hot’ time?
Q: I heard that in order to plan the choreography of ‘Danger’ of your first full- length album Dark & Wild, you had to practice over 16 hours each day. Can you really do that?
Jimin: I feel that it’s hard to do if it’s that many hours in a day. Hahaha, but we try our best to practice for a longer time.
Jin: When we have schedules overseas, we will use the practice rooms there. In Korea we also keep up with practicing regularly.
Q: If it’s like that, then how about sleeping?
Jin: We got a sufficient amount of sleep during our activities previously. But there’s just so much on our schedule this time so we don’t have time to sleep. I used to think that when you’re 21 and if you don’t sleep at least 6 hours every night, you can’t function property the next day. I’ve changed my thinking now. It’s nothing much even if I don’t sleep for 2-3 days, hahaha.
Suga: Ah… I now think if sleep is reduced, then fatigue will also reduce.
Q: What are the plans after your comeback?
Suga: We’ll have a period of rest after the comeback. We’ll have some show recordings and things like that, but our composing work will still continue. Other members also need to continue practicing singing. We’ll be a lot more free than when we were preparing for our comeback.
Rap Monster: Since practicing is very difficult, we also want to have a comeback earlier. I think that way we can strive for rest and also we’ll be on broadcast shows earlier. “Ah, ah, ah, we finally finished recording our album! Let’s go home!” Hahaha, I think like that. When we’re practicing, I don’t even think about going home. If my goal isn’t achieved that day, then I won’t go home. I will keep on practicing until that goal is reached.
J-Hope: (Looking at Jin and Rap Monster) These two have it the hardest.
Rap Monster: To Jin and I, even if we put in 100% of our effort, we won’t even see 10% of the result. But to the other members, putting in 10% effort will produce a 100% result. So us two need to put in 1000% of effort in order to get 10% of result. Ah, this is crazy (laughs).
Q: And it’s because of this hard work that we are able to see you have a perfect performance on stage.
All: Thank you!!
Q: There’s a lot of steps to the dance this time. Your lower body doesn’t even stop moving. And you even sing live too so it must be exceptionally hard.
V: We’re going to die (laughs). Before joining the company, I took dance lessons in Daegu. My dance teacher called me and I was following along to the dance while chatting. We already worked for four hours but Rap Mon hyung still can’t do his part.
Rap Monster: Actually I couldn’t even do 20% of the dance at that time.
Jin: It’s the hardest dance so far. The first time we practiced live, I could only hear heavy breathing.
Q: Son Sung Deuk, the performance director, said in a ‘Danger’ related interview that this time’s practice would’ve been big trouble if it wasn’t for J-Hope. He even said J-Hope seems to have a sense of mission towards dance.
J-Hope: Really? Wow~
Jimin: Yes, yes, I think so too.
J-Hope: To be honest, our members aren’t especially great at dancing. Our dance teacher also mentioned it before - it’s not often you see that many members in a group that can’t dance. Once I heard that criticism, I thought to myself that since I’m already at this level, it would be helpful to everyone if I lead the members. I considered that a lot. During the trainee period, I was the practice leader that was more lively. It felt like the members’ interest and passion towards dancing has changed a lot. I often thought that if even I lose interest and passion in dancing, then what would the other members think. So no matter what choreography it is, I will be the first one to learn it and then guide the members. That is my role. Even though there are hard times, I don’t want the members to see it.
Rap Monster: In terms of dancing, J-Hope is more of a leader than I am. Our teacher once said that the only member with talent within the seven of us is Hoseok. Hoseok not only has the basic techniques down, he has even bigger talents. You may not be able to see well how Jin hyung and I, the blackholes of dancing, are like in MV or live performances, but objectively speaking, I think Jin hyung, Suga hyung and my level is even lower than the average level of idol singers.
Q: Haha, you don’t have to say that.
Suga: (Regretful look) Don’t pull me into that.
All: (Clapping) hahaha.
J-Hope: (Looking at Suga) I think he’s probably at average level.
Rap Monster: I get it. Then it’s just Jin hyung and I (laughs).
Jin: When I’m learning the dance moves, as long as I don’t quite understand, J-Hope will come and teach me. So I follow him from behind. It’s been hard on you J-Hope.
Jimin: The hyungs in our group put more emphasize on music. They chat about music and don’t put much consideration into performance. So performing gets put aside and that’s when J-Hope hyung comes out. He reminds everyone that we must dance.
Q: With so much practice, would you say ‘Danger’ is an emphasized song in Bangtan’s performances?
Suga: When talking about being on stage, that first thing that captures people’s attention is performance. We wanted to perform this song so that it’s at a climax in the beginning. Although there’s more songs recorded in our album, thinking about our promotions, we put more emphasis on beat in our title song. This time the arrangement is done according to the performance.
Rap Monster: I read news that said our title song ‘Danger’ lacked the mass appeal compared with ‘Boy in Luv.’ Honestly we agree with it a bit too. Since our debut, we’ve been showing an image of “we are a group like this so please accept us like this.” We are persistent to our own music. We will continue to think this is the correct way to do so… although not everyone would say, “(Sigh) Wow, this group…” Even so, there will be people that understand us and will like our ‘colors.’ The title song this time is also like this. Our first album lets people feel our position and strength. Our intent is very obvious - do what we want to do. I’ve always wanted to say that haha.
Q: “Doing what you want” really suits you. When you listen to Dark & Wild, you’ll realize things that only belongs to Bangtan Boys. All of the songs are really good. ‘Let Me Know’, produced by Suga, is filled with charming harmonizations.
Suga: We placed a lot more emphasis on perception and emotions on that song. It felt like nothing satisfactory came out of the first day of recording. We thought about what the members needed to do and what kind of emotions they needed to have to sing this song. We finally successfully recorded the song at last.
Jimin: It’s interesting to work with Suga hyung. With other producers, I usually am a bit nervous. But with Suga hyung, he would say, “(With an excited laugh) Do it again with more emotions” or “Do it again.”
Suga: Other composers don’t directly stand on stage and sing. But since I need to both perform and compose, I need to pay more attention to details.
Jin: (Suga) always guide me with, “Let go of all your troubles! Just let go of everything in your mind.” And because of that I lost my voice one day haha. Also what’s funny was Suga even demonstrated himself. He said I needed to sound like I was singing and crying in the wind - “(About to crack his voice) Girl let me know~.”
Q: Haha. Like what happened in Arirang TV’s After School Club?
Jimin: Haha, I saw it.
Suga: (Sounds like he’s talking to himself) 3 octrave ultra sound.
Jin: I understand after hearing that, “Ah, it’s this feeling. No that one.. it’s this feeling” (laughs).
J-Hope: Yoongi hyung’s recording guidance does not sound easy haha.
Q: I once saw a comment that was written for Suga saying that you’re a genius artist and it’s because of you that Bangtan Boys is able to do things that belongs to Bangtan Boys. I can somewhat understand that opinion after seeing Suga.
Suga: My dream when I was young is to be a producer and a singer at the same time. Being able to do well on both sides is my ultimate goal. There are strengths and weaknesses of both sides. Right now it seems like there’s more strengths. Being able to accurately know all of the members’ skills, I can grasp onto those charms well.
Q: By contrast, Rap Monster is totally a performer.
Rap Monster: It’s like that. I’m totally a performer. Before I thought even if I can’t produce something meticulously, I must produce something great. I only had one month to learn about MIDI. But it was a headache when I first started (laughs). You need to take into consideration all of the sounds and what instrument to use… Ah, although it’s an amazing field, I don’t quite suit it. I still compose songs right now but I usually just ‘paint the big picture.’ Besides you have to pay attention the details, do comparisons, and think about it abstractly. It’s like I have to imagine myself flying in the sky.
Jimin: Yes, yes hahah
Rap Monster: Dancing in the sky and letting others see beautiful poses. It’s not easy for me to explain those feelings. All of the harmonizing members have it hard because of me.
J-Hope: Then what feeling is that exactly? (laughs)
V: I also like that feeling.
Rap Monster: When I’m depicting the picture, I would sort everything out and explain it to them. As long as I say “the chorus should be sung like this…,” they would then say, “oh it’s like this.” Then they would sing it as instructed. I would say repeatedly, “yes, yes, like that.” hahaha
Suga: Honestly, I think I suit this because I really like (production) electronics/machinery. I will consider continuing to do production work.
Rap Monster: I really don’t like electronics/machinery. Haha, how nice to have such a hyung.
Q: Haha yes, yes. Everyone is thinking about how to combine and use different types of energy. Now returning to the songs topic, there’s a BTS Cypher in every album. This time, like before, also gave a very strong feeling.
Jimin: BTS Cypher is amazing right?
V: But a lot of people said after listening, “Did J-Hope not participate this time?” It’s because the title said featuring Supreme Boi.
J-Hope: A lot of people didn’t know about me haha.
Suga:This time J-Hope spent an especially long time in the practice room.
J-Hope: Suga hyung and Rap Monster hyung both have very bright styles and their own personalities. I started doing rap when I joined the company. I’m beginning to understand more and more that it won’t do if I don’t work hard. I also sometimes feel like I can’t be the only one that falls behind. So in order to produce an even higher quality album this time I did a lot of research and trials. I listened to a lot of different types of music. I really did work super hard!! (laughs)
Q: We can definitely see that you worked hard. Maknae also improved on his skills a lot. He’s a member that excels in both vocals and rap. Which one do you like more?
Jungkook: Of course it’s singing since I’m in charge of main vocals in the group! I will sing the song perfectly before I think about anything else.
Q: Maknae Jungkook is 18 this year and the oldest Jin is 23. This album talks about boys in their 10’s and 20’s. Do the Bangtan Boys members think it’s representative of them?
Suga: When writing songs, I try to think about things related to that age range. I grew up along to music stories that range from the 20’s to 30’s range. Right now I want to write lyrics that not only represent teens but also those in their early 20’s. Looking at the lyrics from our album, the protagonist (of the lyrics) is mostly designed for me and those similar in age. It’s also the same with ‘Blanket Kick.’ The lyrics was written for those around our age.
Q: Besides thinking about the album, has there been any other things that has been on your mind lately?
Suga: Mines is music and nothing else. I don’t like to go out that much so there’s no where to go and nothing else for me to do besides being in the dorms and going to the broadcast stations and the practice studio. Besides I like this kind of pleasant life.
Rap Monster: I’ve been told before to live more like Suga hyung. I think I would be so depressed that I’d die haha. For me, I long to meet different people, broaden my knowledge, and be in a different setting. Even though I want to do things like that, I can’t do that recently so I feel quite regretful. But I would treat it as a stage I go through. For example, our first round promotions for ‘Danger’ is over but we still have other activites coming up. Besides, we need to prepare for these course of events once again. In other words, other than the bit of time before and after the comeback, it feels like I’m always at a certain distant road - preparing, practicing, doing necessary things. So it feels like there’s never a beginning and end to things. Besides, regarding such a direction, it’s a problem that needs to be considered - I often feel distressed.
Q: On Rap Monster’s social website, you posted a lot of different types of songs. It seems like you like to try many different things.
Rap Monster: But even though I will listen to different types of music, people around me thinks what I like doesn’t resonate hahah.
Jungkook: I only listen to songs Rap Mon hyung recommends!
Rap Monster: In my standpoint, listening to music becomes a learning process. But even so, sometimes listening to songs makes me very worried. I start thinking that I’m a rapper so I should be listening to rap and then I start looking up rap. Moreover, on days when my mood gets sensitive, I would listen to Kim Kwangseok and feel like it heals my soul. Several days later when I once again feel unsettled, I would search up foreign songs.
Q: So that’s why I say that Rap Mon has been working hard to find a balance. How about the other members? What do you usually think about?
Jimin: Lately I’ve been thinking how how my voice can sound better.
Q: That’s meaningful. Although BTS is a hip hop group, you still take notice of the melody. Jimin: Hahaha, thank you!
Q: Anyway, sitting in front of Jimin, it seems like he and the other members are quite skinny.
Jimin: I need to show the poise of a manly man to everyone.
Rap Monster: Jimin is very thorough in his self management.
Jin: He only eats one meal a day!
Jimin: I was like that before but now I changed it a bit so it’s not that extreme. When others see me only eat one meal a day, they worry that I will collapse and told me that as long as I adjust what I put in my mouth, I shouldn’t need to care so much. But since then it seems like maknae started being like me and eating one meal a day. Now people are saying to him, “Jungkook is continuing Jimin’s dieting style. His body is going to break!!” haha.
Q: You only eat one meal a day?
Jungkook: I only eat lunch.
Jimin: I will eat breakfast and lunch.
Jin: The months before debut, I had to endure eating only two slices of chicken breast a day.
V: Before debut, all of the members had fixed menus. For example we would get all of the oil out of the tuna and make a sandwich with it.
Rap Monster: It was disgusting…
V: So Rap Mon hyung and I are always trying to figure out how we can eat something else.
Rap Monster: We’re always figuring out how we can secretly go to the convenience store hahaha. But Jimin never broke the rules once because he hates looking very fat on TV. Every one prioritizes things differently. Although V and I will control our drinks, other members may not. Our thinking is that we may have to control our eating, but we still need to fight and live on, so might as well eat! Actually just practicing our dances is a big exercise so even eating a bit will not make us fat.
Q: It seems like Jimin is pretty strict to himself.
Rap Monster: Yes, he’s very strict on himself
Jimin: Jungkook is even more strict on himself, hahaha
Rap Monster: Jungkook is an alien!
Jimin: I only restrict my food intake to a certain level. If Jungkook wanted to lose weight today no matter what, he would not eat at all.
Rap Monster: But when he sees other members eating, he would eat a little. Have you played Starcraft?
Q: No. I just know about it.
Rap Monster: In that game the marine can use his stimpack. Jungkook is like that. When he uses his stimpack, his HP will eventually run out and die. Before that his speed will become super, super fast and strong. Jungkook is like that too. At first he’ll be like “aaahhh!!” (explosive) and then the next day he’s like “aahh…” (tired).
Jimin: That’s a nice example hahaha
Rap Monster: You can’t stop Jungkook if he uses an ‘energy pack.’ It’s scary.
Q: While filming Mnet’s American Hustle Life, Jungkook said he wants to hurry and grow up as he wants to learn how to drive and get tattoos. You seem like someone that will immediately do what you want to do.
J-Hope: I think he’s going to regret if he gets a tattoo.
V: He definitely will regret it!
J-Hope: Haha, it’s probably better that you don’t have that a desire like that.
Jungkook: My desire has lessened. I will only choose to do what I must. Right now I can’t get a tattoo! hahaha
Rap Monster: I think it’s better if you ocassionally use your ‘energy pack’ because it seems like he uses it everyday (laughs). I share the same room with Jungkook and he’s just so weird. Everyone has their own bed and their clothes and hats are neatly stored away. He doesn’t sleep on his own bed and always goes to the manager’s room and lays on his bed. When we ask why he doesn’t sleep in his own room, he says, “Hyung, I’ll be late if I clean up the room.” hahaha
V: It’s been the third month like that.
Jimin: I even said I’ll help him clean but he’s still…
V: He would answer with, “No!”
Rap Monster: And he says it in an annoyed tone!
Jimin: Ha~ this is worrying.
Rap Monster: He has such a nice bed and yet he doesn’t use it! I just want to sigh everytime I think about it. I’m not someone that cleans well but I can’t be compared to maknae.
Jungkook: Since everything is on my bed, there’s more room to move around in the room.
Q: Really? You guys seem so perfect and can do anything. Let’s talk about your own pros and cons.
Suga: I’m someone that considers a lot of things when it comes to music. I think my stubborness in style can be considered a shortcoming. I’m the type that works on one thing passionately. Though I think my characteristics stand out a lot, on the other hand sometimes I think fall into things too deep. Since I have emotional ties with this, I often work hard so I can do something big.
Rap Monster: If talking about advantages, then I guess you can say that I have my own views. My disadvantage is that I don’t stick to my views until the end. Although even if I stick to it, it’ll permit others to say, “Ok, this person is originally like that.” But I like to listen to different people’s thoughts so I can never be determined until the very end. I’ve always been trying to find a balance in between. I become someone that change a bit after listening to others slightly. It doesn’t seem like much as a whole but when you need to put a blow out at someone, then it’s a fatal weakness.
Jimin: My pro is that I think positively and con is I’m indecisive. It’s a necessity to think that “I’m right!” but I’m not good at differentiating what’s right. My personality is a bit timid so when I get “striken,” it takes me a long time to recover. I would even pout and lose my temper hahaha.
Q: In what situations do you get struck by a blow?
Jimin: When I’m disappointed in myself and think about how much I’m lacking in. I would be in a deep thought about that for a long period of time.
Q: At that time is there anyone you can talk to?
Jimin: If I get criticized intensely I would easily develop those kinds of thoughts. Or that it’ll be better if I start all over again.
Suga: I often yell at him. I strongly believe in an ‘impact therapy.’
Rap Monster: Hyung not only gives impacts, he even has the tendency to make people give up (laughs).
Suga: I’m someone that doesn’t admit defeat… I have two responses when I’m yelled at. “Ah, it’s like this? Then I’m not going to do it” and “Since you yelled at me I’m going to let you see it all.” But usually the latter shows up when I’m doing music. I was often yelled at before, “You won’t be able to make it,” “You’re not a rapper.” But now I can calmly say things like that. I return all those words to them by proving that I can do it and that’s how I became who I am today.
Q: You experienced it before so that’s why you think it’s effective being yelled at.
Suga: It’s unconditionally effective. If you want to give up after being yelled at, then that person cannot sustain a long career in music. I think that’s the most important thing about our job.
Jimin: I don’t think it’s a good technique.
Rap Monster: There’s differences in personality. There’s people that suit and doesn’t suit that technique. I don’t suit that technique. If I get such an impactful speech, I would want to give up totally.
Jimin: I’ll probably be like that too.
Rap Monster: I think something like ‘cheer up!’ would be better.
Jin: I wouldn’t be too concerned over those excessive words. I’ll think what is this and then ignore it.
Jungkook: I’ll ignore it too.
Jimin: I absolutely do not like that . I really don’t understand why one must say such excessive words so I really hate that way of doing things. On the other hand, you will have to do it after being yelled at… so half of it is true.
Q: How about J-Hope? J-Hope: I’m full of sunshine so I’m the type that likes to be close to people. I would be very hurt if I have to suffer through those words and would always think about it. But I don’t want to have people see me like that.
Rap Monster: Even though I’ve seen Jimin hurt, I’ve never seen J-Hope hurt before.
J-Hope: It’s all accummulated in my heart. There’s no return if all that explodes. It’ll also be hard to judge the situation.
Jin: That’s why those that can really make J-Hope angry are the real bad guys.
V, Jimin: Yes
Jungkook: My pro is that I clearly know what I’m lacking in. My con is what was previously mentioned - there’s a lot that I want to do. I always make a promise that I’ll do this and that but it’ll probably end two days later haha. I shouldn’t desire to do so much at once.
Q: Haha maknae is amazingly greedy. Jin said he wouldn’t put the harsh words to his heart?
Jin: I wouldn’t feel stressed out about it. I would totally forget about it after I wake up. Of course I would feel stressed out that day but it’s like nothing happened once I wake up the next day. My con is also that… No matter how hard I practice, I forget everything the next day.
V: hahaha
Jin: I don’t feel stressed but on the flip side, everything I do becomes bubbles hahas.
Q: How about V?
V: There’s a lot of things that I want to try. As long as I simply try it, I would immediately stop it if I think I can’t do it. If I feel that it’s very hard, I would slightly let it go. When I encounter something hard, I would first want to challenge it but then afterwards I would be like, “Aish, can’t do it. I knew it, sorry.”
Q: How about the saxophone?
Jimin: (claps) hahaha
V: I don’t like the saxophone but I learned it. I think I know how to play it? (laughs). There’s just so many things that Rap Monster hyung can do so I want to show off my charms too, but it’s just too hard. There’s many things that you need to do for a long time so I just try it a bit.
Rap Monster: This side (RM, Jimin) is the type that has difficulty in life. That side (Jin, V) is the type that can easily go through life. [Meaning one side is complicated and the other treats life simply.]
Jin: It’s not easy. It’s also complicated for me too hahas.
Rap Monster: I don’t mean that. For me as long as I want to try it, I will start from the basics. Even when I’m playing a game, I’ll look for the guide. After accumulating experience, I’ll think about how to solve that problem. Haha but you two…
V: I’m different.
Rap Monster: He often says, “First let’s try it. Hyung, that character is better?” Simple method, simple attempt. I ocassionately envy you two.
Jungkook: I will give up midway.
V: But that’s becomes a disadvantage in the long-run.
Q: Then what’s the longest thing you’ve kept up with?
V: Saxophone (laughs).
Rap Monster: It was three years! It’s quite hard even interacting with your girlfriend for three years!
V: Three and a half years. Yes, that’s right.
Q: But Bangtan Boys need to continue on for a long, long time!
All members: ahahahaha
Rap Monster: (sarcastic) It isn’t that much longer till we hit 3 years.
Jin: There’s 1 year and 10 months left.
V: It’s good to try it.
Rap Monster: Perhaps you already feel pressured? Hahaha
Q: Hahaha. Everyone is very open/blunt. Honestly for the hip hop style, you can only do well if you are true to yourselves!
Rap Monster: Yes, that style.
V: We are indeed very open!
Rap Monster: I want to work towards that direction. But there’s just so many roles I have to play whether in society or on my own. When I want to do something to 100%, I need to consider the patience of those around me. Sometimes that becomes a bit depressing.
Jimin: I can’t do things like deceiving others because everything shows on my face hahaha
Jungkook: Also deceiving for me…
Jimin: Maknae is really blunt! (Pointing towards maknae and V) These two are determined on things they don’t like.
Rap Monster: I think that’s true.
Jungkook: There has been gradually more problems lately in terms of music and myself.
Rap Monster: Late puberty haha
Q: There’s a lot to think about when you’re 18 years old. Are there any members that sort out their thoughts by writing a diary? I heard in your public blog there’s something call “Bangtan log” that talks about your day.
V: Jimin wrote something like that before.
Jimin: I was made fun of then because of that. I don’t know why I did that. That happened about a few months ago. I think it was because I didn’t seem to think about anything everyday. Although practice goes well, I always seem to have a feeling of “ah, I’m going crazy.” Seeing Rap Mon hyung who’s good at talking and thinks deep, I started feeling like I need to be like hyung. So I insisted on writing diaries for a week. Now I don’t have time to even think about the diary hahaha.
Rap Monster: Jin hyung also write diaries!
Jin: I’ve been writing diaries for two months now. At first it was to write down the lyrics and after a while I thought it was a waste of time. So now I only write important things.
Suga: As compared to a diary, I will write down random thoughts and feelings.
V: I will write down things I’m angry about!
Jin: That’s not a memo!
All members: hahaha
Q: V has an unimaginable personality. But no matter if it’s Danger or Boy in Luv, he has the role where he’s able to explode with feelings on stage. It’s hard to imagine compared to your image now. What are you thinking of when you stand on the stage?
V: I don’t think of anything. I need to coordinate with the members so I just keep thinking that I need to do it!
J-Hope: That’s really a natural gift.
Rap Monster: It’s not that he doesn’t think of anything, he just does what he wants to.
Jin: (Looks at V while talking) You must have other members around you hahaha
V: But I had things I wanted to do before but all of the members stopped me. There was something I wanted to do during We are Bulletproof Pt 2. (Right hand down and left hand cuts down like a sword) I wanted to do that.
Rap Monster: Isn’t that like you’re speaking rudely! hahah
V: I was told not to do it because it doesn’t look good.
Suga: He indeed has a lot of independent thoughts
Rap Monster: As long as we change it up a bit, V will be able to do it amazingly haha
Q: V and Jimin are both born in 1995. Your personalities are quite different. How’s V chingu to Jimin?
All members: hahahahaha
Jimin: I hope you can give me one day. I need to really think about that (laughs)
Q: Hahaha. You need such a long time! Then I’ll ask another question. Jimin is a member that has dancing talents. On Mnet’s BTS AHL dance battle you said the opponent dancer “doesn’t listen to the music.” What did you mean by “listen?”
Suga: Dance is expressing music with your body. Jimin said “listen to the music” to mean the music is expressed very smoothly.
Jimin: I’m not that skilled in dancing so I felt a bit embarassed. But I treat dancing as a joy. Hehe~ When I first started learning how to dance, my teacher kept tell me that “I must listen to the music.” The first, second, and third most important thing about dancing is all music. But although the opponent was fun at that time, nobody wants to watch if there’s no feelings. I thought it wasn’t fun to encounter an opponent like that so I just said it out loud.
V: He doesn’t listen to music but he’s still able to roll like that! You couldn’t see Jimin dance much on the broadcast. As long as there’s a little bit of music, he’s able to come up with some moves. If you watch the broadcast, Jimin has about 2 seconds where he’s dancing! haha
J-Hope: It was so fun being there!
Q: From seeing you today, it seems like you guys learn from each other and is a group that works together. What do you want to show everyone in the future?
Suga: Right now we’re placing more emphasis on performances. Next we hope to let everyone see us focus even more on music. Besides we are a “seonyeondan” (youth group) so we care a lot of growing up. I hope everyone will see that Bangtan Boys change everytime you see us and that we changed for the better. I hope until we die, we will show us growing.
Rap Monster: I hope we can become a group that suddenly causes others to take a breath. No matter where you go, it’ll be music you can take with you. I hope to let everyone see the attitude of singers singing and dancing. To be honest there’s a not a lot of singers that makes you open your eyes and listen attentively. I hope to pull on people’s heartstrings just by listening and watching to a few seconds of the song. I hope that we can forever stay in people’s memories.
Q: Lastly, will you have a Christmas edition this year?
Rap Monster: Please wait a bit! We just past Chuseok recently so it’s a bit strange to talk about Christmas all of a sudden. But we probably won’t be writing carols haha. Right now we’re already preparing for our year-end performances. Since it has the meaning of “working really hard this year,” we must stand on a stage this year. In order to do that we definitely must work passionately (laughs).
W Korea December 2014 - BTS Interview

Q: I heard your concert just ended and now you are busy promoting your follow-up song “Hormone War.’
Rap Monster: The follow-up promotions is also about to end. After that we need to prepare for our Japan concert in November. If we have any free time then we usually do our own things - singers will sing and producers will produce.
Jimin: Just as Rap Monster said in order to keep up with our own abilities, we will take advantage of any free schedules to practice.
Jin: I’ve been going to the practice studio a lot lately. I used to think that we get really busy when we have activities, but the activities can actually be a very calming time personally. Since we get really tired while preparing, we don’t get any personal time. Since now we have activities, we get to also retain some personal time.
Q: The concert ended perfectly? It probably felt quite different to have your first solo concert?
Jin: It was really fun. It was so great to sing so many new songs in front of the fans. The fans also prepared a surprise so I was really touched. I almost cried.
Jimin: There wasn’t a dull moment within the three days of the concert. I didn’t even know how time past. I feel so happy. It’ll be amazing if we can hurry and hold our next concert.
Rap Monster: There were fans that came to watch us everyday within those three days. Seeing that makes me feel like we all happily held our concert. What’s different from a broadcast performance is that everyone feels very happy right? We get to relief stress and also gain strength. This seems to be the most fulfilling about having a concert.
J-Hope: I believe as a singer, having a concert is a very meaningful thing. Our concert is also like that since it’s our first concert since debut. It’s not considered a bit venue but one that fits 2,000 - 2,500 people. It allows us to see our fans up close. A concert like that is great. It’s so great to be with and to communicate the audience.
Suga: I’m also the same. I believe a singer utilizes a concert to prove his talents. We spent a lot of time preparing for our first concert and I’m very thankful that it seemed to conclude smoothly. Not only us, but the audience also really enjoyed the performances.
(J-Hope: It was really fun. I also heard a lot of broadcast-related people say that.)
Jungkook: It definitely has a completely different feeling than a broadcast performance. V: I truly wanted to deeply treasure each and every performance. Through the first concert, I felt the importance of showing different types of performances. Of course there’s parts I’m lacking in but it was also very fun going in there everyday to ‘fill up’ that part.
Q: It’s not too long until your second debut anniversary. What has been the biggest change since debut?
Rap Monster: I’m the type that can’t really conceal my feelings and expressions. If there’s something I’m not happy with, it’ll still show on my face no matter how nicely put it is. It seems like I can control that pretty well now. It also seems like I have a broader view on things now. I think I’ve become more mature. You just have to face society and life in that manner.
Jimin: I always hide things in my heart when I hear something bad. But now I’ve generated more ambition so when I hear those kind of words, it ends up stimulating me instead.
Jin: I’m quite the opposite. Before debut I didn’t really care about what others were doing. Even when someone says something, I will say “what?” When we debuted, I didn’t think of anything besides looking ahead and working hard. Watching the “Hormone War’ MV, I really see that I’m enjoying everything.
Suga: I appear to be calmer on stage. I start to understand that what you do on stage can make the fans feel fanatical.
V: First off, it seems like the members have changed a lot. Not too long ago when I was looking at the pictures when we were practicing as trainees, everyone seemed very well-behaved. Compared to before, now they seem to be changed by the cameras (T/N: Meaning seeking attention when there’s cameras around.). Their expressions changed a lot. In conclusion, they’re a lot better now!
Jungkook: I feel like I like how I was before better. Though it’s only been a few years, I feel like I grew quite a bit. And of course my talents/abilities also improved.
J-Hope: It seems like I became a bit thick-skinned. For example I’ve become a bit shameless when I’m posing. It’s also the same when I’m leaving messages. I also felt like it was amazing at that time hahas.
Q: Before your second anniversary, are there goals you want to achieve whether as part of the group or as an individual?
Rap Monster: I want to be #1. After working I understand why everyone longs to be #1 on music shows. I couldn’t understand that before. Now you notice a big difference between getting #1 and not getting #1. No matter how you get #1, it seems like you’ll be better known and recognized. It’s very special if the company’s first idol group can get first place. My original goal was getting rookie awards and having a concert. Since those are fulfilled it leaves this one. I want to receive #1 after our second anniversary. In addition, I want to receive acknowledgment for our music. In fact, there has been good comments about our performances but it’s a bit of a shame that we still can’t get that same response for our music.
Jin: Our goal we set at first was ‘rookie award, concert, first place.’ Right now what’s left is getting #1.
Suga: I want to finish more of my personal works before our second anniversary. I’ve always been producing but I haven’t been able to lately due to our busy schedules. I’ve also received questions about what kind of music I want to do. I just really want to do ‘good music.’ Regardless of the type of music, it will make your heart thump to the music. I want to do that kind of music.
J-Hope: The group goal is definitely #1. Can we get #1 if Suga hyung can come up with good music?
V: Of course it’s being #1! If we get #1, then it seems like we will have to find another dream.
Jungkook: The goal as a group is to be #1. For me personally, my goal is to sing better. Right now my live singing ability isn’t good enough. It’s not that I’m unsatisfied with myself but I just want myself to do even better. I hope in the future Bangtan Boys can be a group that can sing live very well.
Q: It sounds like all the members have a lot of ambition.
Rap Monster: We’re actually more and more passive. Even so, we always think that we can do even better if we always think that there’s things we’re lacking in. We will, again, bear in mind what our goals are. Thinking about our efforts, good results will of course follow.
Suga: I really have a lot of ambition. I’m the type of personality that I can’t live if I lose.
J-Hope: It doesn’t look like it but our group has a lot of ambition. I’m also like Suga hyung and Rap Mon hyung. Especially Jimin! V also! Jin hyung too! It’ll be very obvious if each do their own thing.
Q: The seven of you have quite a lot ambition. We can see that everyone’s personality is very bright on variety shows. Do you normally have disagreements between each other? How do you solve them?
Jin: If something big happens, we would gather together to talk about it. It’ll get solved as we talk about it. If there’s emotional problems between certain people, then they will talk it out. It’ll get solved nicely that way.
V: We’re really like Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei. I’m not joking; we have a really good relationship!
[T/N: All three were warlords in the Three Kingdoms period. They had a brotherly relationship while fighting in the Eastern Han dynasty.]
Jungkook: If something bad happens, we will still say it aloud. We would directly say it and solve it right then and there. That’s how we won’t be unhappy later.
Q: You are a group composed of late teens and early 20’s. You said you wanted to do music that represents the feeling of this age range. What kind of music do you want to do in the future?
Rap Monster: I’ve already written lyrics and songs for over 7 years. I just simply wrote parts of the lyrics and now I think about the whole song. First I want to let everyone listen to songs with different types of feelings. It’s already enough if there’s just one song that can move someone’s heart. We’ve always done according to what we originally said, which is to tell a sincere story. We want to integrate into this age range so those in the same age can feel the same message.
Jin: Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of music and also working hard. I’m also writing lyrics when I have the time. The most common thing people sing about is related to love. It’s unfortunate I can’t seem to write those lyrics right now. So I will also use someone else’s songs as reference. Sometimes the fans also give advice. A fan that came to a fansign said, “Oppa, this will be of great help to you when writing lyrics” and gave me a book. The fans have been a great help.
Q: Bangtan Boys is the first idol group in Big Hit led by Bang Shihyuk. I want to know what Bang Shihyuk means to Bangtan Boys.
Rap Monster: There seems to be a special relationship. He’s really like a blood-related brother when we’re working together. He absolutely has no bias towards music. But he is very strict when facing Bangtan Boys. Sometimes he says things you can’t even understand and sometimes he’s very scary.
Jin: To us Bang PD is a very good person. I’ve never heard him say anything bad and he’s very good to us. For music he has very good leadership and listens to everyone’s opinions. Sometimes I realize he also has a cute side.
Jungkook: He just always seems unapproachable as he’s pretty scary.
V: He’s like the principal. He gives a lot of advice. It would be too much if we went into it specifically so it’s more appropriate to call him the principal rather than a teacher.
Q: Compared to other idols, what is a charm that belongs solely to Bangtan Boys?
Suga: The point that we continue to grow is our biggest strength. If you look around, there’s ordinary friends all around. When you start comparing you’ll gradually realize that we are even more mature. I think that’s our charm. Ah! There’s another obvious thing. V and Jungkook’s face. Through this, many people started listening to our music. Haha. What’s good is good so it’s okay.
J-Hope: What’s amazing is that people around me say that Bangtan Boys’ music is different. Ah, is it like this because they’re people around me? (Suga: Of course it’s like that!) Even if they don’t know other idols, they say they must listen to Bangtan’s music. Anyways, we really have been growing. Jungkook also grew a lot taller hahaha. Of course our abilities/talents have also grown since debuting.
V: Our personalities are especially open. There’s people that looks good and those that don’t haha.
Q: I want to know what Bangtan Boys think of the modifier “idol.”
Suga: I’m just a normal person doing music. I’ve heard people say before that they are the company’s puppets and is dictated by the company. It’s a bit different now. If I’m not an idol, there’s probably no way this many people is listening to my music. Of course there may be people that don’t understand if I use my talents to prove it. I believe this is something that we can change.
J-Hope: I said it before that I’ve become thick-skinned lately. I think it’s good if you just know my music and I continue to develop. Like that more people will recognize us. (Suga: But you’ll also have to surpass the bias. A reporter we did an interview with before ask why idols would do hip hop. But I also think that can be changed. As long as we work hard, we can change that?)
Rap Monster: I orignally hated the term idol. All idols hate it too. I also have a lot of bias against idols. I can’t say that all of those feelings have disappeared just yet. I also thought about the pros and cons. I must admit what I must admit. I’m an idol now so I can’t dislike this. In fact, we’ve also received favors because we are idols. We are able to have concerts and go on many music shows because we are idols. I also believe we get to do this pictorial because we are idols.
Jimin: I’ve had similar thoughts before. I hated idols hahaha. My thoughts probably changed after seeing so many sunbaes. The bias disappeared after seeing them work hard.
Jungkook: Since the meaning of that word can easily go bad, there’s people that don’t really look up to that word. I think even if I’m an idol, I still need to show off my talents to everyone. Besides, I don’t seem to have any other thoughts about it. I’ve always carried the thought of “I will prove it with my talents.”
V: As an idol, you want to show off your own abilities. We must let those who don’t know us to view us in a new light haha.
Q: What do you want to do most if you have a short break?
Rap Monster: I want to spend all of my time on music. I’m a bit anxious as I want to produce songs. There’s a lot that I want to do right now. No matter where I am, I want to produce.
Suga: If time allows, I would feel very happy just staying up all night producing. I also worked about 2 hours today. It’s the most relaxing in the production studio. I’m the most happy when I’m working. Besides, I don’t have many friends anyways hahas. So I probably will do even more work when I have time.
Jimin: Will it be weird if I say I want to play? Haha If I have time I want to play around with the members. It’s also not a bad thought to go see my family if I have time.
Jin: I really want to do something simple like going to the movies, ocean, or eat dinner with my family. Ah! I heard this from other idol sunbaes before - having a few computers in the dorm and playing games together. It’ll be fun if we do this right?

Date: 2014-12-23 02:46 am (UTC)Edit: Finally read it all. That first interview was filled with gold. I absolutely LOVED how they talked about the dancing, and how Suga refused to take their shade. XD
I also just love how straight up honest these guys are, especially Rapmon. Just going off the interviews, I feel like I'm most similar to Rapmon in how I'll have an opinion, but I can easily be swayed to see another perspective by someone else, and then I'll question my stance. I think that's why Rapmon always has a small space in my heart (despite J-hope taking up 75% of it).
I'm also terribly amused at Jin basically saying he has no f*cks to give when someone comes at him with mess lol. Both interviews were great though, and I'm glad to see them being so introspective, and to even have an interviewer who asks such detailed questions. :)
