[Updated with Apologies] Winner’s Mino Criticized for Making “Korean Yeoldo” Comment on SBS Gayo Dae

WINNER‘s Mino is under fire for expressing Korea as “yeoldo.” Yeoldo is a term that is literally translated as “ten islands,” and is used to refer to the Japan Archipelago.

On 2014 SBS Gayo Daejun which aired on December 21, actress Song Ji Hyo and the Lucky Boys (2PM‘s Nichkhun, CNBLUE‘s Jung Yong Hwa, B1A4‘s Baro, WINNER‘s Mino, INFINITE‘s L) hosted the ceremony.

While MCing, however, Mino said, “That shook up the Korean ‘yeoldo,’” which wrongly associated Korea with Japan. With the tense and still-fresh history of the Japanese Occupation in Korea, the mistake incited shock and anger in many Korean viewers.

While many of the viewers recognized that it was mainly a mistake on the part of the script writers, many still put some responsibility on Mino, arguing that he should have recognized that the script was inappropriate and should not have made the comment.

This script error was not by any means the only mistake that SBS Gayo Daejun made that day. While it was a long-awaited ceremony, it brought huge disappointment as there were a large number of troubles including audio problems and camera shots that were difficult to understand.

Local news source Osen reports that Mino apologized for the mistake, saying, “I sincerely apologize. Everything is due to my mistake and negligence.”

SBS associates also offered their apologizes, saying, “It wasn’t Song Mino’s mistake. It was the production’s mistake. We apologize.” The PD of SBS Gayo Daejun, Kim Joo Hyung, added, “Song Mino did well, but because the situation turned like this, we are sorry.” He explained that since the only way they can control the length of the live show is through the addition or subtraction of the comments by the MCs on the spot by the staff, some of the comments were unable to be reviewed properly and the mistake by the production team occurred.

idk enough about Korean culture and history to know if this is the sort of thing that most people know/how big a deal this is, but it was obviously a mistake and not an offense he intended, since he was just reading lines off a paper.

Mino admitted it and apologised. All the while SBS threw him under the bus. Poor Mino. I'm glad at least SBS backtracked. As for people saying but he should have known!! Under that kind of pressure as a rookie and being told not to go away from the script, it's not like he could just change it.

yeah sbs has a really bad track record with shit like this... during the asian games they wrote daehan-ilbon instead of min-guk, replacing the word republic with japan. they've also several ilbe troll issue hiding ilbe pics onto live news and shit... major side-eye.

A 4 month rookie apologized for something that wasn't even his fault (though I loved how they phrased it that he should have caught it while reading making it clear it was in the script...I hope YG/Mino were the ones who released the photos of the script because I'm sure Mino kept his lol)

I didn't initially fully grasp the cultural context or connotations of this, so I was a bit puzzled. Now I understand that the implication of 열도 is bad enough (and widely accepted to be bad enough) to warrant a contorversy. So while I think it's understandable that Mino just read the script as is in a pressure situation, I can also see where the "he should've known better" crowd is coming from. It's still shady as fuck of SBS to try and pin it on him, though. They should've accepted responsibility right away rather than wait for Mino to take the fall.

Netizens were a bit high on Mino just a few days ago, so not surprised something like this came up. They're back to singing him praises, though, so now I'm paranoid again. But honestly, too much weight is placed on the opinion of netizens (both korean and international). If netizens were truly reflective of idol popularity, then GD and most YG artists would be unemployed by now and chased through the streets.

well you have to understand that the so-called netizen opinions we see from netizenbuzz are very selective (and biased since the site purposely picks the negative comments) from a portal site that tends to be negative about everybody. and like everywhere on the internet, more extreme an opinion is, more popular. but yeah gd is a living proof that netizen opinions mean jack shit.
