FT Island’s “Burden Of Being An Idol”, And The Advice From Kim Changwan Is?

FT Island feels burdened to be labeled as “idols”.

The band revealed how they feel about being labeled as “idols” on MBC “Music Travel LaLaLa” that was aired earlier on 2nd September.

“Because of this title, we have to work even harder,” FT Island voiced their concerns, “People will have preconceptions about us.” They also mentioned that, “There’s no time to rest and we’re also short of time.”

MC Kim Changwan advised the members, “Just be shaggy and go on schedules in your training clothes will do.” Lee Hongki laughed, “I do that actually.”

FT Island also mentioned that, “As we get older in future, we want to be called musicians.”

The band also performed a remake version of Yoo Jae Ha’s “Because I Love You” on the show.

I have a feeling Jaejin has been sporting the short, not-so-stylish hair since earlier this year to get rid of the idol image. Idk. maybe it's just me.

Not sure about that but not surprised if that's the case. I mean Wonbin do like to write poems and stuff so he probably did write songs too. If that's the case, then F&C sucks for not letting them do it.

Very unlikely. The time they had was so short. It's quite time consuming to write a song, especially when they're not experienced and since F&C is all about making money, everything had to be done fast.

unfortunately, they LOOK like idols. and even though they have amazing talent as musicians, i'm not so sure that they can escape that idol image, therefore the label of being one.

Dear FT Island members, a guide how to shed your idol image:
a) Star writing all your own music
b) Start looking like rockers instead of idols
c) Start playing hour or two hour live gicks and touring the country instead of concentrating on TV shows.
d) Stop with fan meetings and ridiculous fan service (your fans can see you on those live gicks) and start behaving like rockers (this doesn't mean you have to become an ass) instead of idols.

Agreed on some of those, but can't blame the boys.
And a part of me want them to stay as it is (but write their own stuff) because it will be hard to follow them otherwise. They needed the exposure they have to be where they are now. I just hope they will do more than just play other people's songs.

Hongki is singing and the 3 guitarists are bored and pretending that they're playing on their unplugged guitars.. poor Jonghun he isn't singing even for 5 seconds = no one shots

I know McFLY (the English band) did the same thing when they first debuted on tv shows like these Korean ones but eventually they played live. I'm quite surprised they haven't let FTI play live now even 2 years after debut. They probably need to appear on other shows that let them play but these main ones help them a lot in promoting the songs.

I hate it when Idols/"musicians" complain about being famous.
Even if it's only for a minute.
They're are loads of bands that give the rocker touch more than the idol touch.
If FTI wanted that, they could have it.
Pity party fail. :P

I don't think they have a problem being famous. They just want people to take them more seriously.

Management decision, I afraid. Yes, they could quit like Wonbin did but they probably love it too much to quit.

Wonbin had the right idea.

He didn't like where the music was going, or he didn't like what his company was doing, so he left. That's not to say he didn't care about his music just as much as the other boys. Personally, I think Wonbin has more self-respect then the others.

I seriously doubt they have too much freedom in looking the way they want. They don't write their own songs. They spend loads of time on TV...What reason do they give for wanting to be known more as musicians than idols? They're already musicians for playing instruments and singing. :p

I agree on the self respect thing. But we don't know if the others don't feel the same way.

I think that's probably the reason CN Blue debuted in Japan instead. F&C are probably trying to change their strategy.
I personally think their Japan management is more open to music writing since they already did once and Jaejin is writing again for the next release. CN Blue also have one song on their own (Yonghwa's to be exact)

About writing/composing their own stuff, I think Jaejin co-wrote something & Jonghun composed something for their latest Japanese single. I remember reading this somewhere a couple of months ago.
So I think they are at least trying.

But they can't do whatever they want (for example playing live) because it's not up to them.
