First kpop song I listened to was Super Junior's Don't Don all the way back in 2007, followed by Wonder Girls Tell Me (thanks to Heechul being such a massive Sohee fanboy)
ngl I miss Don't Don days Suju......2jib was the best imo
I don't remember the first kpop song I listened to, but it was probably a SNSD song.
I got into kpop thanks to Miss A and Block B. Miss A's song BGGG made the rounds on tumblr and impacted me enough that I still remembered it even though I forgot to reblog it. Then maybe a year later after casually listening to girl groups off and on, a girl on my dash reblogged some Block B videos and raved about how they had such cool MVs, so I gave them a chance, and they were really good. Their music was really unique, and I'd never heard anything like it before. Then I saw some people posting about Omona on ONTD and decided to join to learn more about kpop.
I had a summer job back in 2011, and one of the guys I worked with was randomly a BBC. I remember judging him sooo hard even though I listen to them too. I just felt that was a weird gateway group.
grown up businessmen watching kpop on their smartphones and trying to hide it from everyone else OUCH i didnt know asapscience were fans of Kyary, lol i first got into kpop when SNSD's Genie & 2ne1's Fire got popular in my country in 2009. it's amazing how the public & local media had a field day with kpop back then. Suju was such a HUGE thing too
I got into K-Pop shortly after Kingdom Hearts came out. Simple and Clean was my shit, and I asked my friend, who is much more well versed in the ways of Asian country music, who she recommended I listen to in addition to Hikki.
Ayu and BoA were suggested. And when I got fully into the sheer splendor that is BoA, Queen of Everything, I saw the SMTown videos and was like "WHO ARE THESE OTHER PEOPLE, TELL ME MORE?!"
I recall hearing a Shinhwa song in high school (1998 I think) but I was more into jpop and cantopop/mandopop. I've been on the outskirts of kpop for a LONG time.
I knew who BoA was because Japan and remember her showcase with Brittany but Anita Mui died that week so I never checked it out...found out later that was DBSK's debut. I knew about them later in Japan too LOL.
I actually took an active interest in Kpop in 2005 when I fell for Clazziquai's She Is while I was watching My Name is Kim Sam Soon and I've been here since then
Okay I just went to check the songs on the first one...they were Big Bang-Fantastic Baby, SNSD-I Got a Boy, and Shinee-Lucifer...yeah they were better songs except for Homin's performing sells anything
Through Jpop sorta. Was looking for more jpop on youtube. Finally found Yuna Ito's "ima Demo Aitai Yo" and absolutely loved it and still do, so I went looking for more, but ended up finding SuJu-M's Super Girl and loved that. Then listened to SuJu and SNSD's S.E.O.U.L. song which got me more interested. Then I found After School's "Because of You" and knew I was in love. Kind of a shame you don't find too many songs like AS's BoY though.
tl;dr: Yuna Ito, Super Junior, SuJu+SNSD, After School.
Also, I came for that gif. Who's the guy on the right? It's Woo Bin, then Jonghyun, and then?
Love Ito Yuna's voice! She has a really amazing voice and a real sweetheart too irl. I feel like she's so under appreciated in Japan despite her amazing vocal prowess. :(
DBSK Mirotic was the first Kpop song I ever heard, but SuJu Sorry Sorry was the first kpop video I ever saw....at the time I thought it was jpop so I got excited. But ultimately SHINee is what sucked me in, Ring Ding Dong being the one to do it.
SHINee broke me too, which is kinda weird since their sound changes from single to single (but their albums are forever ballads disguised as pop-rnb -_-).
Probably Rain/Big Bang/DBSK/SS501 in early 09. I used to walk to school with a girl who was into kpop. BB pretty much killed my interested (I wasn't here for any Asian wankstas...which they still are btw), but as a drama fan I was obligated to at least finish listening to the Bi and SS songs. I also avoided Asian pop in general because I already fangirled over too many dramas/animes/mangas.
Then in Dec 09, I was locked out of my house so I went to another friend's house. She basically forced me to watch a bunch mv, but she had a better selection. 2NE1 was like "cool female hip hop girl group" and SHINee had my heart with the Replay's old school RNB realness.
But I was basically stanning through my friends until I ended up watching Again & Again/Heartbeat (I was bored in class and friend C had only 2 video on her phone).
A long, long time ago I came across a performance video of SeeYa where their background dancer had a seizure on stage and I really liked the song so I spent hours trying to find and download it on Kazaa. At the time I didn't really know what KPOP was so I didn't get into it anymore after that. A few years passed and I then came across BOA's 'I Did It For Love', but again I didn't know what KPOP was so I didn't delve any deeper into the genre. Then more years passed and I came across Co-Ed School's 'Bbiribbom Bberibbom' because people said it copied Gaga's 'Telephone', but I still didn't get into KPOP after that. Eventually I dabbled some more, found songs from GD & TOP, and looked around a bit but still ignored the genre as a whole. I think I was under the impression that these were just one-off songs and artists that happened every now and then and failed to understand that much like American Top 40, KPOP existed as an entire industry. It wasn't until 2012 when I came across Big Bang's 'Fantastic Baby' that it finally clicked in my mind that maybe I should look up more songs to see if this type of music happened more often. I ended up becoming obsessed with Big Bang because most of their music was right up my alley. It wasn't until mid-2013 that I finally decided to branch out from Big Bang to see what other acts existed and that's when I discovered the large and vastly wonderful world of KPOP as a whole.
Just realized that it took me like, six years from when I stumbled upon my first KPOP song to when I realized KPOP was a thing. Wow.
i'm actually fairly new to kpop. i get into it after hearing a snippet of exo's 'growl' when they were listing the nominees for best worldwide act (i think that was name of the category) at last years EMA's. i looked the mv up on youtube and i loved it. after that i came across shinee and before i knew it i was watching their entire season of 'hello baby' and listening to their music. soon afterwards i came across bap and bangtan and i was hooked. i think the actual first kpop song i heard was bigbang's 'fantastic baby' back in 2012, which i really liked and i found myself humming it in my head even though i had only heart it twice. i wasn't familiar with kpop back then. i heard about it here and there but i knew next to nothing about it except for the name 'super junior' and that it was a group.
I got into kpop around the time princess hours aired. But the first korean music video i ever saw was Because Im A Girl. I remember it was constantly played in the local music channel and i remember bawling the first time i saw it. Had no idea it was korean at that time.
I'd be curious to see people react to k-hiphip since it's typically kpop that's people's go to for these things but k-hiphop would probably be more of an attention getter for some of these people (musically, anyway lol). ultimately it doesn't matter but it's just s/t i'd be interested in u know.
i got into kpop b/c friends were sooooo excited abt the 2011 wonder girl's comeback since it had been a while and i was like "what is this mv every one is so happy about, who are these girls" and that was that lmao.
I think most of the appeal/shock value of reacting to kpop is that it's so visual, it's usually a catchy song with a concept and dance routuine.
Hip-hop is typically about the words and story so it might not have as much of an impact, unless they show a rap song with an engaging video like Epik High's "Wannabe" or something. I think the reactions might be boring because if you don't understand the story you can really only remark about there flow.
my bffl became obsessed with shinhwa in like 05/06 (?) and she was determined to drag me with her so she made me a cd as a kpop primer and it had songs from shinhwa, minwoo, se7en, hyori, jinusean, etc and I ended up liking it. I don't remember the first song i listened to but I remember this song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4Qga45zXfM) being my favourite lol
around the same time i watched full house and was in love with Rain for a bit then a while later came across Super Junior and had a crush on kibum and full house and ehb keep me interested. I also really loved jaejoong + DBSK too.
stopped paying attention for a long time then a combination of running man, kdramas and shinee brought me back in I think late 2010. My interest in kpop always fluctuates but atm, I'm pretty up to date.
also one of my first introductions to kpop. eric mun, never change.
8th grade dance class. my two best friends were kdrama nerds and i guess were casual fans of kpop. they decided we would do our dance to bigbang's stylish and oh ah oh (for real lmao those were my first two). i wasn't interested in it much, but i wanted to fit in so i downloaded bigbang's discography... and never listened to it. i remember pretending i was super psyched about 2ne1's fire because it was right around then that the mv came out.
anyway, i guess i had subscribed to bb's official yt channel because over the years i would remember watching gd's and taeyang's mvs and then gd&top's (which i hated, initially). i also would download new bigbang albums (their first japanese album has a special place in my heart). i mean, i liked it but whatever, i'm not gonna get into it.
then seungri uploaded wcid and vvip and essentially i was like "damn this guy is hot what is this". thankfully, the tonight album came out right after, which i loved, and solidified my interest. i only paid attention to bigbang until end of 2011, and began to branch out.
I was a jrock fan, and through that became connected with others in the j/k-music scene. I was aware of groups like SuJu, SS501, and such through them, but I didn't really become a fan until a friend showed me DBSK's 'Balloons' which I thought it was so cute and ridiculous, and I started stanning for JaeJoong. The same happened when Wondergirls released 'So Hot'. Even though I liked those groups, I didn't really understand how the whole kpop scene 'worked' (comebacks/variety/music show wins etc), I just paid attention to DBSK and WG music.
Then in 2008/2009 when the international kpop boom really started, there was lots of wank in the jrock fandom about jrock fans leaving for kpop fandom (lol), at which point I started actively learning about kpop, discovered Big Bang's 'Haru Haru', and was reborn as a VIP.
The first korean song I ever heard was 'There she is' from the SamBakZa flash animation series when I was like 13. The first k-pop song i listened to was 'Gee'. my friend posted a link to it on twitter, i clicked it and liked it. For years those were the only korean songs I knew. I'm not totally sure when it was but i think sometime around 2011 I think I briefly dipped my toes in k-pop but didn't really start paying attention until 'IGAB' dropped in 2013.
Its all started with Kdramas and Kdramas OSTs for me. I still think Kdramas OSTs churned out the best Korean music till this day -- I always like the efforts they put on the composition and lyrics (not to mention vocal abilities of the singers) to the songs unlike most K-pop songs which have trash or weird lyrics despite the addictive melodies.
Now I cant stop listening to Melody Day's new OST song 'You're My Everything'. The lyrics are helplessly cute and I can relate a lot to the drama. :DD
