It’s been recently revealed that the model-turned actor, Kim Young Gwang will be enlisting in the army, serving as public service worker.
On December 5, Newsen spoke with Kim Young Gwang’s agency, who stated, “Kim Young Gwang will be enlisting in mid-December and will serve as a public service worker. He has currently completed filming for his upcoming movie, Boil Youth. He won’t able to participate in movie promotions in January, but will do his best in the army.”
According to Korean laws, Kim Young Gwang will be serving as a public service worker as his father was a level 3 man of national merit after serving in the Vietnam War.
The agency staff said, “Kim Young Gwang’s father is a Vietnam War veteran, who passed away due to the aftereffects of the war when Kim Young Gwang was in elementary school. So Kim Young Gwang will be serving as a public service worker for about six months.”
Meanwhile, Kim Young Gwang showed impressive acting in his most recent work, KBS’ Good Doctor. He finished filming for the movie Boil Youth and also made surprise appearance on MBC’s Infinity Challenge for the Milano special.

Date: 2013-12-05 07:15 pm (UTC)EDT. I'm sure there are lots of Vietnam vets in Korea who suffer from PTSD and have died from the effects of it, so do they get the same treatment as a celebrity? If so, I can understand the desire to protect another generation from the same family from that kind of trauma.
Military service, is, in-and-of-itself, transformative, and from what I've seen, not in a good way.
I have Korean male friends who suffer from health issues (joint pain, back pain, stomach issues), anxiety, OCD, depression, and in one case, having served in the Korean Augmentation To U.S. Army (KATUSA), when he gets angry, explosions of homophobic language that sounds an awful lot like it came from the mouths of American soldiers. These things are not conducive to a healthy life, either physically or mentally.
