During the recent filming for ‘Ssul Jeon‘, the topic of, ‘If your child became a celebrity?’, led the MCs to conduct an analysis of the ‘Big Three’ entertainment agencies in Korea, SM-YG-JYP.

The MCs went into a detailed discussion of the CEOs, artists, and training system of these three respective agencies. Announcer Park Ji Yoon compared the agencies into different types of schools sharing, “SM is an academy of thorough training (like a military school), YG is an alternative school that emphasizes each students’ individual colors, and JYP is home schooling that is taught in the way of J.Y. Park.”

Huh Ji Woong also compared the founders of each label to tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) restaurant owners and stated, “Lee Soo Man is the grandma of a traditional tteokbokki store, Yang Hyun Suk runs the franchise that gains popularity with its new menu, and J.Y. Park is a tteokbokki store owner who gives half air, half tteok [rice cake].”

Catch this interesting episode on the 28th at 11PM KST on jTBC! Do you agree with their views?

YG is douchey art school

JYP college is for the sake of eccentric scholar JYP to wear a tutu and fly around on wires. Basically party school.

YG may be a hippie alternative school or whatever, but their graduation rate is still really low/failure rate is high compared to the others, or so it seems.

(So parents who don't actually want their kids to be idols should encourage them to shoot for YG, maybe?)

So do you just mean that many of the artists under YG aren't actually idols? Overall I think they have a wider spread of talent (rappers, idols, non-idols/ballad singers, etc) than the other two companies.

Idk, for a military school SME is pretty lax. People debuting only after a few month's training. Others just suddenly getting up and disappearing for months and years at a time. But then again, you do hear stories about impossible schedules and being pressured to perform ill. However I do have a feeling that it has lessened now though. SME can't afford the bad rep anymore, not after JYJ and Geng.

As for YGE, they don't really have all that many graduate of their own, do they? Correct me if I'm wrong, but BB and 2ne1 would be the only ones..? Others seem to be already established artists who transfer over in a later stage. I don't know as much of BB early years, but 2ne1 has always stroke me as being pretty much under YG's total and complete control. From concept to looks and behavior.

And JYP. Well, I could see that.

I don't know why there's a public perception that YG is the fun, free company. That's what it's marketed as, but every group under YG isn't managed like Big Bang. If I was treated in any way like he treats/treated 2NE1 (and I'm not even a stan). I'm not here for his management. Also not here for JYP's mismanagement of his artists either.

I don't think SM is as bad as it maybe used to be, but it still has a lot of faults. The large community under their umbrella seems somewhat comforting though.

YG: I might let you write your own songs, MAYBE let you produce, but i will be verbally abusive towards you and sexist, i mean i did call my cash cow the source of evil and members of second most popular group ugly. I also might be an ephebophile since i found the mother of my children sexually attractive at the age of 15 when i was in my mid 20s. i may have also had a boner for Minzy, and still do, that's why i cover her body and give her terrible haircuts cause wtf is autonomy. At least i won't be aroused by her, i do have a young wife at home

My inherent anti-blackness and appropiation of black cool is a whole other topic on it's own

lulz, I had a similar libelous thought re: YG and "someone in 2ne1" as a half-assed guess for why he was letting them die of neglect, the way he let his wife-to-be's group fail from neglect....

(Though with GD, I wonder if it was, like, after his weed scandal or something.... Not that it excuses YG, but I'm guessing he does not do well under pressure. Or he does even worse than usual.)

I never think that sm is that much of military school.

They have people who disappear forever (kibum) and people who just disappear (kris)
Whenever any shinee members voice out what they want to try, they end up getting a few months or half a year later.

Like taemin says he wanna perform piano, minho says he wanna go dreamteam, onewsays he wanna do opera, and jjong basically used to say he doesnt like acting or variety and he rlly didnt do it unless its group promotion.

And i see exo shopping pics almost everyday. Lol.
Sj also does whatever they like now. Like when heechul said he wanted to be dj and they let him have youngstreet etc.

thank you for this. I agree tbh. To me the biggest issue now and forever with SM is how they refuse to even TRY reigning in their sasaengs, and their artists suffer for it. they also dont even try to conceal airport arrival dates half the time, causing mobs of fans to descend upon the poor idols like a tsunami made up of teen girls. and like SM has had some serious issues in the past that make people so wary of them and its understandable I mean H.O.T, Shinhwa, Brian Joo and Hwanhee complaining about their concepts when they were in SM, and ofc DBSK and Hangeng.
The thing is tho, with the exception of Hangeng. most of the worst stuff that went down were a WHILE ago. I think SM has really toned down since earlier days. and they can afford to because their fanbase and cash flow are so large and consistent. So its ok if they take more risks now. Let idols have more leeway etc. Even tho DBSK's break up wasnt that long ago, most of the awful stuff that SM did to them (some p bad abuse went down in their early days) was a whiiile ago. I think their issue with SM was they wanted full control and also werent getting paid on time. Even tho I dont blame JYJ for leaving I think their reasons werent as cut and dry as fandom makes it out to be. as in they werent just leaving cause SM is so awful they couldnt live anymore. (otherwise ofc homin would have left too, are they masochists?)
The thing about hangeng and its never really talked about, I think that geng was treated harsher cause he was chinese. and he was the only chinese member. I dont think it was SUPER obvious or otherwise ofc members esp siwon and heechul would have noticed. and i bet hangeng never spoke about it and didnt even realize that he was being unfairly singled out till later on. I think also he had the double issue of being so far away from home and never being able to visit, in a place that he likely didnt always feel welcome in. to top it off he was already p well liked from his chinese activities he did as a member of suju, so he had alternatives and ofc he took them. and He's obviously much much happier now. But what I mean is these were all specific situations that it doesnt make sense to me to paint every artist in the company with that brush. esp since most of the drama seemed to come from the male groups. I dont think the girl groups never suffered but I suspect they had less problems esp since girl groups dont have to deal with scores of sasaengs since sasaengs are almost always girls.

If I actually had to choose, I would probably want to train under SM. They may be strict and some of their work ethics brush me the wrong way but they do deliver good performances, concerts and variety. I guess I also prefer a strict company over "you can do what you want" companies. They seem more put together, organized and the change to debut seems bigger.

YG - just no. He can only manage one group at a time and with Big Bang as most of his income he would be pretty much ruined if they ever quit or something. Plus his demeaning attitude against his trainees/staff and idols and the fact that after debuting - if you get lucky enough - you will probably disappear in the basement before you know it.

JYP. Don't know - don't care.
