Article: Yoo Oh Sung expresses "In Korean society, whenever a governmental scandal erupts, the controversy is covered up by entertainment news"

Source: Newsen via Nate

Actor Yoo Oh Sung was asked what he dreamt of achieving as an actor and he chose respect. "In Korean society, I often notice that whenever governmental or societal scandals erupt, there is suddenly an explosion of entertainment scandals that are released. In the end, I just don't want actors being used so easily by society for these things."

1. [+716, -120] Whenever a governmental scandal comes out, celebrities suddenly start doing drugs, getting divorces, and going on public dates.

2. [+680, -173] Isn't that why Rain and Kim Tae Hee's scandal came out... because the congressmen passed pension....... shhhh!

3. [+586, -146] I noticed this as well during Seo Taiji and Lee Ji Ah's scandal. There were several other scandals that came out at the same time. I think this goes the same in any country. The entertainment industry is used to distract the public and cover up anything else that's more important. There are way too many instances of this happening to call it a mere coincidence.

4. [+59, -22] I'm honestly tired of conspiracy theories. It doesn't make sense for a celebrity to go out drunk, get in the car, and hit someone just because someone told them to so they can cover for another governmental scandal.

5. [+49, -36] I don't believe in these conspiracy theories either. In what world would celebrities go out and do drugs, drunk drive, and murder people just to cover governmental scandals ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
- Haven't you noticed that most of the scandals were events that took place months or years ago but are conveniently released to the public at the same time as a governmental scandal?

This isn't something new buth thanks for pointing that out.
It's practiced not only in S.Korea, though

Makes me think of Jo Moore and her 'it's a good day to bury bad news' quote

He's completely right. Seo Taiji's divorce covered Lee Myung Bak's stock manipulation scandal and GD's weed adventure covered scandal of government officials going to casino.

Yeah, I remember how weird it was that GD's weed thing came out in October when it was actually discovered in June/July.

I agree that this is practiced all around the glob, but personally I usually see people trying to cover political scandal with another political scandal - some dirt in the opponent's past, problems with minorities, serious social issues or nonexistent threats from other countries. And the entertainment? It's only taken seriously when some legendary actor/singer dies. Then it's a big deal. Other than that - no one cares.

This issue also shows how great influence has government on the main korean media, cause it's not only about releasing the news in the convenient time, but also giving it a necessary coverage. Media play with people's thoughts by putting entertainment scandals on the front page or at the beginnig of the tv news shows or as a top article in the search engines. All of this is an attempt to convince society that Rain/Kim Tae Hee scandal etc. is the most important thing and it's all people should now talk about. And this is really scary.

Yeah, it seems really extreme in South Korea :s I see other people commenting that this happens everywhere, but at least in the country I live in nobody cares about celebrity gossip..

Yeah, mine too. Celebrity gossip is like 2/3% in our main newspaper (most famous newspaper). Truthfully, the public is not interested to read them.

Okay, today I found out something big which is Seo Taiji used to be married to Lee Ji Ah (the Lee Ji An from The Legend fame) for 9 year. :O This is like one of the biggest news from the history of K-entertainment industry imo. :OOO

I'm a big fan of both Kdramas and Kpop for the longest time and I just know about this yesterday when I read this news. I thought; 'It can't be that Lee Ji Ah from The Legend, right?' Then I google it and found out it is. It's amazing how they managed to get it under wrap for all these years despite her husband is one of the most influential persons from Kpop.

this is something that has been brought up several times in Omona, especially with that GD weed scandal and the Jjong dating that actress scandal. but this is what happens when the government has a heavy hand in controlling the media industry. (wasn't there a strike at one of the big three protesting the government's hand in the media/news industry?)
