Sweetune are really good at giving the groups they work with a certain sound but sometimes they don't expand that sound over time and as a result everything starts to sound the same.
The sound they've chosen for Nine Muses seems very fixed and focused on a certain beat, instrumentation and song structure. It's definitely nice for a group to have a certain trademark sound but in Nine Muses' case I'm missing a wider spectrum of songs.
It seems to work when they're writing for Infinite, like I elaborated one comment below. (On the other hand, it doesn't work so well anymore when they sell something Infinite apparently rejected to Boyfriend who in turn start to sound too much like Infinite... but that's just another aspect of the problems of having too few producers in kpop.)
Except She's Back sounds nothing like Paradise and neither sound very much like The Chaser... I think Woollim is paying Sweetune better money to write them songs you can actually tell apart. And I'm not even hating here, I like what they're writing for Nine Muses (except maybe Ticket for its annoying chorus), it's just that a little variation here and there wouldn't hurt.
Agreed! I'm still looking forward to their comeback, the concept alone sounds interesting enough even if the song should indeed turn out to be standard fare.
This must be a very subjective thing then because Figaro and News sound very similar to me. They're both funky but cool, slightly melancholic late 70s/80s disco songs to my ears. Ticket might be the furthest away from that typical 'Sweetune for Nine Muses' sound but it's still very prominent in the chorus.
What I was trying to say with my original comment was that Nine Muses always seem to be getting the same kind of song to promote (mid-tempo disco/dance tracks) but at the end of the day that's probably what they do best, especially considering their vocal abilities.
I wouldn't say their(vocal line) singing abilities only makes them good for dance tracks. I think they could easily pull off slower tempo songs and ballads. Granted not davichi level ballads but still. I mean if dal shabet can do it, 9m can, and with better vocals too!
I didn't say they were only good for dance tracks, just that that's what they're doing best, though. I'd love to hear something different from them, even a ballad tbh. (And I don't think they'd be too bad at it either if they get a song that fits their abilities.)
I think their company isn't able to let them promote often enough so they always give them a 'safe' song which in their case is a mid-tempo dance track. But they've been around for so long, they should really push things forward a little and surprise everybody with a killer track or something that comes as a total surprise. All this same old same old Sweetune stuff is getting a little boring, people might loose interest in them and before we know it the girls will be performing in front of soldiers for the rest of their idol lives :( But who knows, maybe with the new line-up and concept it might work better this time around...
Then I agree. Both songs are very late 70s/80s. What i was trying to say is that the songs, having both the same style, are quite different from each other. Figaro has no rap, is more disco etc. Is kinda NineMuses style and it works for them. I don't know, to me all 2ne1 or Bigbang songs sounds very similar, but it works for them and people like it and enjoy it. I don't know if I make sense at all, xD
You're making perfect sense :) I think it has to do with kpop groups always having a kind of trademark sound as a result of working with the same producer(s). And in the long run they seem to shy away from collaborating with different producers to explore other directions/genres.
I've been casually following Nine Muses since Ladies and I definitely am enjoying their songs so a part of me likes to pretend not to notice what I perceive as a problem (i.e. their songs sounding very similar) XD Having the same type of song works for them because they aren't around often enough so I can't even get tired of them. But as a whole I wish there was a little more variety to their sound, especially if they should ever plan to release a full album...
