I know this really isn't an entertainment post but it really is just so beautiful I had to share it.T___T I hope more things like this happen over in Korea.
oh man ;_; this reminds me of the "It's Time" video for Australian marriage equality. both so beautiful but extremely sad they're even necessary in this day and age.
I only got into kpop in the last couple of months, and it's the first I've really learned about korean society. the level of culturally and institutionally ingrained homophobia... still really shocks me.
The nature of the homophobia is completely different from Western European diasporic cultures, though. The vast majority of Korean homophobia is directly imported from the West, because outside of a fairly narrow reading of Confucianism as requiring all men to be husbands/women to be wives as part of filial piety there's never been the kind of demonization of same sex activity in and of itself as there has been in the Western canon.
There are all kinds of other checks on "appropriate" masculine/feminine behavior that have nothing to do with who your sex partners are, so there isn't as much innate disgust/disturbance about the very idea of same sex activity on an individual level. The success of The King and the Clown and the subsequent explosion of sympathetically depicted gay male characters in dramatic works speaks to this.
Honestly, the US and the UK have an almost infinitely greater amount of cultural baggage about LGBT issues, they've just also had lobbies working for legal representation and protection for over 70 years more than South Korea does.
(For a really interesting insight into how historically well represented gay men, at least, have been in Korea, do a little reading about King Gongmin. It's definitely a trip, coming from a western history nerd's perspective.)
I don't think they are. But alot of cultures were tolerant of Homosexuality, from Asia to Native America. Not until the spread of Christianity did Homophobia spread like a plague, for instance the myth that Homosexuality is a choice, or a modern disease when it's been around since the dawn of time. But then the Catholic Church loves to make up history. For instance the claim that Greece and Rome fell because of the Increase of Homosexuality, tale spread by the Church, I mean how can you ignore that kind of teaching.
Honestly, any Christian who is homophobic [...] is missing the core of points of the religion entirely On Year's End for the first time I experienced homophobia from the church. I had to attend a mass from a church not from my town and I had to leave it halfway through it as the friar lamented the abomination of giving orphans to homosexual couples. I think I slammed the door as I exited.
No one was saying that all Christians are. But the truth cannot be denied in that so many of the big Christian religious institutions push homophobia. You know the Uganda Kill the Gay's bill? That was pushed by an American preacher. That is only a recent example.
And you are wading in to No True Scotsman territory with that second sentence. http://www.logicalfallacies.info/presumption/no-true-scotsman/.
apparently from what i could gather on their fb page, the company that shot this was based in la and the director was korean-american. it was shot in seoul though and the actors are korean citizens
I never get over how gorgeous the greater Seoul metro is. It reminds me so much of where I grew up. (Northeastern Oklahoma, the green hillbilly part of the state, not the cowboys/grapes of wrath part)
Which makes sense geologically speaking, because both areas are really old mountain ranges with similar climates, but it's weird seeing a giant city sprawled over terrain that I'm used to seeing completely empty/with a few highways and nothing else on it.
I'd love to visit your hometown then ;~; I live in a zone of planes and sweet hills. They can be beautiful in a soothing, smooth way, but they lack "dramatic force", lol.
at first I was rolling my eyes at the cheese, but then HOLY SHISUS WHAT JUST HAPPENED. ugh my heart is overflowing with butterflies and rainbows, this is just beautiful awesomesauce ;A;
"HEART" is one of my favorites! If you're starting off with her I'd suggest you download her best album "BEST FLIGHT" and also get her newest one "WEAR I AM."
My youngest daughter is a Lesbian in a committed relationship and she and her partner would one day love to get married. Pull your finger out Australia.
