One Japanese entertainment outlet is receiving heavy attention after publishing a prediction that Korea’s Hallyu wave would end in spring of 2013.

The daily news site, CYZO published on January 2 an article titled, ‘Idol Popularity to Last? K-Pop Boom is Ending?’

In it, the article wrote, “In 2012, aside from AKB48 and Johnny’s, there was a lot of dark news. In 2013 will we be able to receive some brighter news,” as it delved into an analysis of the current state of Japanese music.

It then went on to say, “Japanese music industry insiders are predicting K-Pop’s boom will soon come to an end” and quoted one Japanese record agency as saying, “Some said it was strange that K-Pop singers didn’t appear at the year-end NHK ‘Red White Song Battle’, but since its peak in 2011, K-Pop’s profits and value have been plummeting.”

The article also wrote, T-ara, IU and other female artists are still being generally well-received but male stars have already passed [in popularity]. In particular, since SM Entertainment and JYJ ended their contract dispute, it’s become less likely the original five members of DBSK will stand on stage together again. It seems K-Pop’s center has now collapsed. Already we’re seeing fewer number of [K-pop] groups making a debut [in Japan] and it’s likely each group will now quietly attract fans.”

On the other hand, the article predicted a rosy outlook for J-Pop saying, “Though the departure of a few members from AKB48 has affected its popularity, the support and numbers at its concert has been increasing. With its unit groups, [AKB48] is continuing to attract new fans. Its popularity is likely to continue.”

In Japan, KPOP will fade (except Tohoshinki). But around the world, I don't think so.

However, for kpop idols: Japan>World.

Come on. Are they still expecting Tohoshinki to reunite as 5?! LMAO!

Tohoshinki may have crashed and burned as a 5-member group, but the Tohoshinki duo and JYJ still dominate Japan, as far as Korean male singers go. Tohoshinki's even doing better in Japan than they ever have.

i imagine that the groups that aren't super successful will probably stop promoting in japan at some point and that new k-pop artists won't debut, but i'm sure that the more successful groups will still have japanese releases, i.e. TVXQ (they are still doing really well even if they aren't 5), Girls' Generation, Kara, and BoA (yeah yeah i know somone is going to tell me that BoA isn't as popular in Japan as she used to be and i know that, but she's been in the Japanese music scene long enough to have transcended that Hallyu label) and probably other artists that don't dominate, but still do well enough like SHINee, Big Bang, and B1A4 will continue promoting in Japan. i probably forgot to mention some group or artist that is successful in Japan, so please forgive me
and i don't think that it's going to be like a hallyu apocaylpse like this article makes it out to be lmao

I agree. The end of k-pop wave in Japan was just a question of time. I believe artists that were were popular before the Wave will still be active.

Not surprised, sales decreased dramatically in 2012 and all those korea vs japan political issues played a big part imo.

Tbh, it was sinking before that. Korean entertainment groups have flooded the market offering nothing new. There's genuinely only a few kpop groups that stand out and those are the ones that find some sort of success in the Japanese market

"The daily news site, CYZO" and that's where i stop reading.
There's no denying that kpop is becoming less popular in japan than it was 2 year ago but it's something that's not gonna go away just like that. More than anything it's starting to weed out kpop groups in japan that don't even do anything in japan. So many groups last year debuted in japan but really all they did was release japanese versions of their korean songs. Of course people are gonna start losing interest because that's just laziness right there. Groups like TVXQ, Kara and SNSD I think will still do their thing in japan and even if they don't sell as much as they use to, will still sell.

Well Cyzo may not be the most reliable source of info tbh. Does put forward a good point...that no one else hasn't said.

Does seem like females have lower physical sales but are generally liked (kpop-wise) in Japan. Well compared to their males.

I don't think this will stop any of the singers or groups who have already set foot in Japan, but will slow down the debuts, as we've seen. Nothing wrong with that really. Singers can move on when ready, not when their companies want to make a quick profit. Fans in Japan will still remain loyal for a while though.

I feel like when you're talking about hallyu in Japan, you have to leave TVXQ and BoA out of it since they are already established as artists.
But people saw the end of the hallyu wave in Japan a mile away so this article isn't anything new.

lol, "good news"? sounds pretty douche-y even if i don't care for all the kpop nugus debuting in japan recently.

regardless, even if the hallyu wave finally dies down, groups like tohoshinki will still continue to do well there and i doubt artists/groups that are popular in the future (ie, the future version of jang geun suk, etc.) or just very talented will see much obstacles if they suddenly drop an album over there.

I'm sorry but didn't wasn't there some article earlier last year that said Kpop was going to end that year... and now it's going to end this year.
It's like the people writing these articles are saying "oops the end of the world didn't happen... again, so we're just going to say that it'll definitely end this year".
*sigh*
And what the heck is up about the random mention about a DBSK reunion.
*shakes head*
