Girl group T-ara is said to have turned down an endorsement deal with an alcohol brand, a coveted commercial deal in the entertainment industry.
Aside from Ahreum, T-ara’s youngest member (with the exception of Dani, who will join the group later), all of the members of T-ara are legally adults in Korea. However, as a big girl group in Korea, T-ara has apparently turned down this offer.
Their agency Core Contents Media stated, “We believed that having the girls appear in an alcohol-related commercial is not fitting, for the dancing, singing, fashion, and actions of idol stars are highly mimicked by the teenagers of Korea, and thus, we have turned down the offer.”
They further added, “[T-ara] will not be appearing in commercials that condone drinking culture to teenagers in the future as well.”

An advertisement for Japanese game machines, or Pachinko, has recently been circulating the Korean web, featuring girl group T-ara as the endorsement model, which has caused a bit of a stir online, especially with Core Contents Media‘s latest statement on turning down alcohol endorsement deals to serve as good role models for teenagers.
On December 19th, a post called “T-ara’s Pachinko Ad” surfaced, attracting many comments and much attention from netizens through both SNS and online communities, on the belief that by doing the advertisement, the girls are endorsing gambling. Although the game’s object itself isn’t to gamble, the machines are widely used in Japan for gambling purposes, so some felt that by the girls endorsing the game machine, they were also endorsing gambling.
Wit Core Contents Media releasing a comment about turning down an alcohol related commercial deal in hopes of becoming better role models for children and teenagers, who look up to idols and mimic their behavior, this advertisement has struck netizens as hypocritical.
Core Contents Media has responded, “While they did do the Pachinko advertisement, it is not for gambling. Well-known actors like Song Seung Hun and Bae Yong Joon have done Pachinko ads, as well as KARA.”
So are they being hypocritical or are netizens being unfair? What are your thoughts?

Date: 2012-12-20 07:28 pm (UTC)They should stop with those statements about them rejecting stuff on the first place, all this would've never started if it wasn't for them telling the media how much everyone wants them and how they keep rejecting them.
CCM are a bunch of idiots and all their artists should leave them.

Date: 2012-12-20 08:30 pm (UTC)The thing is that CCM likes to tell the press out of the blue how T-Ara turns down really great endorsement deals, in this case, the alcohol deal, because as idols, they have to be role models for teenagers.
But then netizens dug up a Pachinko ad, which is not per se gambling, but encourages it.
So it's a bit contradictory how CCM claims to be interested in the well being of teenagers by turning down an alcohol endorsement but at the same time has T-Ara promoting games, especially when no one asked them about the alcohol cf.
I hope this clears it up a bit.

Date: 2012-12-20 08:59 pm (UTC)Still I don't see the issue. Gambling doesn't really hold the same stigma as alcohol consumption so I can understand endorsing the pachinko machine and not the beer.
Also companies talk about getting "love calls" and such for their idols all the time. Saying how T-ara are rejecting them is too similar for it to be a problem.
