For world-famous movie-making team the Wachowskis, shooting their recent science fiction film was like a game.

Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski known for their worldwide hit trilogy “The Matrix” came to Korea Thursday for the first time with German director Tom Tykwer and English actor Jim Sturgess to promote their new film “Cloud Atlas.” Korean actress Bae Doo-na, who stars in the film as one of the six main characters, also attended Thursday the press conference with them.

“We were actually going to cancel the press conference so that we can get out and see this beautiful city,” said Andy jokingly during the press conference held Thursday in Seoul.

Their new drama and science fiction film, written and directed in collaboration with Tykwer, was adapted from the 2004 novel “Cloud Atlas” by David Mitche-ll. World-famous movie stars appear in the film including Hugh Grant, Tom Hanks, Ha-lle Berry and Ben Whishaw.

The film explores how the actions of individuals affect others throughout the past, present and future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is transformed from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future. Each member of the ensemble appears in multiple roles as the stories move through time.

“It was quite easy (for me to make the film), because the book was wonderfully constructed. We had a lot of fun finding all the connections. It was a process that continued all the way through the creation of the film, even in editing. Even after watching the film, we still found a connection we hadn’t made. It was like a game,” said Andy.

During the conference, Lana, who described her wife as a big fan of Korean food, said she first got to know Bae when she watched “Take Care of My Cat” (2001).

“I kept watching her films (after I watched ‘Take Care of My Cat.’ I watched almost all her movies,” Lana said.

The director spoke highly of the Korean actress Bae for her superb portrayal of the role Sonmi-451, a genetically-engineered clone. The director said that Bae is capable of expressing “pure emotional vulnerability” and underneath this there is “toughness and strength that lead to a revolution” an effect similar to that caused by Sonmi-451 in the film.

Lana also expressed a positive view about the Korean film industry, actors and actresses. She also shared the desire to make a film in Seoul.

“We think the Korean film industry is very exciting. There are many great films being made out of here,” Lana said. “We want to make a movie in Seoul so if you have a good book or good ideas, send them to us,” said Lana. She previously worked with Korean singer Rain for “Ninja Assassin” (2009) and said working with him was like a “dream.” She described him a “physical genius like Mozart,” adding that when he asks him to perform something, he does it instantly.

Andy Wachowski, 44, teamed up with his older sibling Lana Wachowski, 47, and began working on films. Their first script was optioned, and formed the basis for the film “Assassins” (1995). The Wachowski's went on to make their directorial debut with the self-written “Bound” (1996), which was well received. They followed this with the smash-hit “The Matrix” (1999) and went on to produce two successful sequels, “The Matrix Reloaded” (2003) and “The Matrix Revolutions” (2003).

Other projects include scripting and producing the cult hit “V for Vendetta” (2005), a live action version of a Japanese anime series, “Speed Racer” (2008) and the ambitious epic “Cloud Atlas” (2012).

“Cloud Atlas” will be released on Jan. 10, 2013 in theaters nationwide. Rated 18 and over. Runs for 172 minutes. Distributed by NEW.

Depends on the distributor, in their infinite wisdom they decided to release Cloud Atlas at strange times, we UK people aren't getting it till March.

how is that possible? Portugal is usually the country who gets the movies later and we already have Cloud Atlas...

I think they only produced Ninja Assassin.

But then V for Vendetta isn't directed by them either but they were the writers on it.........?

Andy Wachowski has defended the decision not to use Asian actors, saying: "The intention is to talk about things that are beyond race. The character of this film is humanity."

He asked that "people give us a chance and at least see the movie before they start casting judgment."

Idk, I get the sentiment behind wanting to use the same actors throughout given the book's themes, but I wonder if the threads could have been connected some other way. And the way in which they executed the transformations wasn't exactly respectful either. D:

urg glad im not the only one that feels uncomfortable with that. posted about it on tumblr twenty minutes ago. have so far received 7 anons telling me to read the book because i'm missing the point. i'm just like, thanks anon, but i get what they were going for with the whole reincarnation-y stuff. i do. but i'd be upset if it were blackface, and i'm upset about this.

It's infuriating bc I see the same bs on tumblr. it's a fantasy book! Imagination is like, a key factor, but I guess those anons don't want to even imagine poc in their fantasy world.

Casting multiple actors to play the same part isn't the most far out concept and works more than the offensive (and horribly distracting) yellow face.

Like, it's hunger games all over again.

i know right? i'm so tired of people trying to justify it. it's racist, even if the filmmakers didn't intend it to be so. i wish they had found a more creative way to make the reincarnation thing clear without being offensive. fjksalghjlas. frustration.

They could ask for a Korean's designer input (or Bae Doo-na herself) but I guess it's too much and it will make the movie even more expensive. >.>??

Their movie's target will be the Asians so they should be more sensitive about this issue tbh...

The two Matrix sequels successfull? I thought everyone agreed that we must forget their existence because they ruined the perfection that was the first one.

ikr

I mean, clearly she's happy to use a Korean actress to express “pure emotional vulnerability” but I guess it would be too much to ask for an actual Korean to play the actual main character. . . .

Why? Aside from the yellow face thingie (which I know is a great deal), did they make anything else that is offensive? Or the movie is just bad in general?

Apparently, Africans look exactly like Pacific Islanders?

Apart from the racial bending situations, the problem with the film was execution. The story seemed like vignettes rather than pieces to a bigger picture.
The movie was about interconnectedness yet I had a difficult time seeing the links and the significance of their impacts. I could only see three. Also, the regurgitation of actors confused me.

I'm just disappointed on the missed opportunities. It could have been a really thought-provoking piece :(

How is Cloud Atlas? I heard so far from reading that the movie is brilliant but is a flop in the US. :/ Some ppl are saying that ppl who lack 'intelligent' wouldn't be able to enjoy it or understand the complexity of the film?

I'm still waiting for the DVD to come out. Well, I hope it did well when the movie hit the worldwide theaters since having a 100 millions budget but only grossed around 26 millions (in the US) so far is not a good sign. >.>

From: [identity profile] windygables.livejournal.com
The movie's plot was great though the yellowface did put a damper on it. It's probably not the complexity since the movie had alot of subtext but even a younger audience member would've been able to understand the overlaying themes and plots. It's more that the promotion of the film was very flawed and never actually even hinted what the film was about so many people weren't interested in seeing it.
It's probably going to recoup the rest of its budget when released in Asia because the book was the biggest hit in Asia where its theme of reincarnation made it popular

Ah thank you so much! I love movies that makes me think (& have many layers & complexities. Too bad the yellow face thingie overshadowed the potential the movie might have -_-) so I actually really anticipate it.

(omg kevin~ <3)

Np! If the yellowface of the movie is too offputting the book is still very good. I hadn't known of the yellowface issue before I went to see it so I was taken by surprise

Yessss, I'm hoping Christopher Nolan's infatuation with him will lead to casting him in more of his films.

From: [identity profile] tsuyoi-hikari.livejournal.com
That's exactly my dream tbh haha. I hope Chris Nolan put him as a lead in his next films. I mean, with his brilliant minds and Cillian's stunning abilities to portray different characters, the movie will surely become a hit.

Well, apparently he was supposed to play Bruce Wayne in Batman Begin (I know, if the original castings went though, we got ourselves a skinny Batman! XD;;). But Bale came in and the rest is history but since Chris loved his audition, he casted him as Scarecrow instead in his Batman trilogy & Inception. :D

From: [identity profile] superjesster.livejournal.com
I heard that apparently Nolan let Cillian choose any part he wanted in Inception (I dunno if this included Cobb or not), though I don't know how true this rumor is. It seems like he doesn't really like choosing big, blockbuster roles?

And yeah, I heard that too! But they passed him over for Batman actually (he auditioned because he's a big fan and wanted to be near the Batmobile) but was so impressed with him, that they called him back for Scarecrow.
