I'm kind of sad that through some of the video they would revert back to Korean - I mean, I know they're more comfortable with it, but it would have been better if they had stuck to one clear language. But that's just m opinion.
They're all so qt and I wanted to hear more of their derp moments and Dara's crazy cat lady stories, the precious baby. Bommie was adorable but I can tell that her English is degrading and she really needs to practice if YG wants them to break into the American market. Minzy as well, because, despite a whole year of promoting overseas, girl has not been able to speak English for an entire interview, though CL is usually doing the talking.
SO SO SO frustrated over the delays for their album, I can only imagine how pissed they would be. Like CL said, it's been a whole bloody year, the girls need to come back NOW.
People always say how she is learning English, but at this point I am doubting this more and more since she hasn't spoken a single English sentence in this (and every other) interview I have seen. Not sure about her Japanese though.
He really should. I actually feel like it needs to be a part of the training for every trainee tbh. English is such an important language that you can always fall back on when you don't speak the language of the country you are in. That aside, you can and should be able to learn English yourself for a big part as well. English isn't my mother tongue, but I basically (with a little bit help from school) learned it myself.
In everything I've read about training programs they like to say they prefer people who know multiple languages, or that they have a focus on teaching languages, but I don't believe it. it's rare to find any idol who is good at speaking or singing in a language other than Korean.
I saw the interview when Taeyang said Danny Im taught him English, like he taught the basics of the language using textbooks. I don't see how they can't afford to hire a cram school instructor for this and add it to the curriculum.
Exactly! They always say how they focuse on teaching languages and most of them speak only Korean. Now I know that their initial focus is on Korea, but almost every idol/group eventually tries to find popularity in foreign counties. I am not saying that they should be able to speak Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese and more, but at least a second language next to your own is not that hard.
That is why I always get so annoyed when people are defending their Oppa and Unnie by saying that "we can't expect them to learn every language of every country they promote in." Is it that strange to at least have a basic grasp of the language when you are promoting in the country?
But that being said, I feel like YG has no focus on other languages in general. CL is basically the reason they can promote somewhere else then Korea or otherwise they would just be depending on translators. I keep wondering more and more what it is trainees actually do learn in YG, beside the usual dancing and signing.
I have no idea! I read am interview GD gave saying they used to give him a track every week and expect him to make a song, then they slowly went to giving him a new track every day. I personally think he is a great songwriter and producer and it's good YG robots like Teddy are around him to teach him a good skill set.
That works for him but most of their trainees are singers and dancers. What was Minzy doing? What was Taeyang doing? We saw with Lee Hayi what YG can do in six months with raw talent. But i wonder what the "new groups" have been studying all this time.
ETA: I was pretty disappointed in Bigbang not being able to speak to the American fans very much... It was endearing at times but I would expect them to be speaking mostly English outside Korea and Japan with a bit of fan service in that country's native language.
it's interesting because you hear about SME and JYP having in-house language teachers, yet i've never heard any of that from YG. you would think that since they're the ones pushing for america the most that they would have at least an english teacher on staff.
I agree. We also had the bemused reaction to You. Great. It's really surprising they don't have more English speakers hands-on with the business outside songwriting and PR.
This exactly. It's ridiculous to expect a group to become a global sensation when they can't even fluently speak the language of the market they want to break into, if at all.
But then again, YG has never been the best at making good choices :\
hm true, i thought it was supposed to be GD + Taeyang and GD didn't recall more than a few sessions? true now they have more facilities but idk... i justhope the new girls are multilingual to prove me wrong lol
Hmm I guess it would bother me if they were trying to break another country and did not at least have vocal coaches who spoke that language. Personally I am way turned off by poor English and am not a fan of poor English in songs. Idk what YG is planning (does anyone)
They do have teachers, not just english because during BIGBANG's trainee years they were given a choice which language they wanted to learn. Gd chose Mandarin/Chinese, Taeyang chose Japanese (in their earlier years) then English. Seungri & Daesung chose Japanese...god knows what the hell TOP chose.
Minzy in the light of aiming to be debuted in Japan with May Doni learned Japanese.
YG DOES have english teachers since in the diary entries Daesung & Seungri had before the US concerts they mentioned being with their teachers studying hard for it. Also, in 2NE1TV/GDTV during GD's birthday party he introduced his English teacher then she gave him an english book as a gift.
Not to mention, Teddy,Choice,BIG TONE,Masta Wu,Lydia and all these people around them to help.
ohh it's very interesting to learn about the language lessons. i really know nothing about yg's training program (as stated upthread lol). the split in bigbang makes sense based on who appears to be speaking on tour and in variety shows. and Top seems to have a good handle on english based on his raps.
ok i'm glad i didn't imagine hearing a connection with minzy and japanese, i thought i heard something about that. though i can't recall if she has a big chunk of the lyrics in 'Scream'?
having native/fluent english speakers in the studio is a boon, but i think that aids mostly in their recorded output. it gives them better, coherent lyrics to sing and proper intonation while singing. i would bet that adds to the appeal to some english-speakers like me who don't know korean but can't comprehend why we hear poor english in kpop.
i think you're right in wondering if having multi-lingual singers is really a priority at yg (or any label?), especially after debut.
2ne1 American debut is a pipe dream. For somebody who lived 8 years in America Bom's language skills are awful. Minzy will never speak fluent English because she has Korean staff around her 24/7 and a bandmate who will speak for her.
Companies always talk about importance of learning foreign languages but when the bands travel outside of Korea they almost never speak Japanese or English. The bullshit about multilingual idols gets exposed as soon as they go abroad.
