B1A4, the definition of an evolved Idol
Now, idols who are busy lip syncing to the songs composed for them by another musicians and dancing to their choreography don’t exist. Passionately singing and ad-libbing to their self composed songs and great rapping skill. They even calmly handle unexpected situations and warmly hugged their fans. It was B1A4 who showed the definition of an evolved idol group.
On 8th this month at the Seoul Olympic SK Handball Stadium, group B1A4 (Jinyoung, Baro, Sandeul, CNU, Gongchan)’s first exclusive concert “BABA B1A4” was held. Total of 11,000 tickets were sold out for their 2 day concert from 8th to 9th and proved the super rookie B1A4’s influence.
B1A4 performed “Tried to Walk”, “Beautiful Target”, “Sleep well, good night”, “Baby I’m Sorry”, including their unreleased tracks “I’m burning” and “”Would you like to sing together?” and more, selecting 24 tracks in total and created a splendid 180 minute stage. B1A4 who opened their exclusive concert after debuting for about 500 days started off the show with group stages completed by their teamwork and arranged solo stage moments to show off their own different charms.
◆ From cutie boys to strong men
Each member of B1A4 appeared on stage wearing matching white suits decorated with neon epaulets. The concert hall had a main and a center stage so the members constantly moved and kept the audience heated. With sorrowful voices and flashy group dance the members showed off their charisma but they casually revealed their adorable charms during the “Cutie Player” sequence.
The show consisted of “WE ARE B1A4” “NICE & SLOW” “Music Drama Section” “Surprise” “Burning to the Final” “ENCORE” and other corners, opening from singing, dancing to acting. It was during “Music Drama Section”, when the members’ challenged acting even though they are still inexperienced and presented the fans with different fun.
‘Music Drama Section’ connected to their solo time and Sandeul passionately sang Panic’s “Left Handed” while CNU showed his mature aspect by performing Wheesung’s “With Me” with a female dance partner. Baro easily rapped to “Just the two of us”, Gongchan revealed his sweet and gentle mood with “Would you like to sing together?”. Jinyoung performed “Be My Girl” with a female dancer and gave voluptuous vibe, CNU and Baro intensely performed “I’m burning”.
◆ Of the Fans, For the Fans, By the Fans
B1A4 focused on customizing their concert for the fans. They thoroughly understood what their fans wanted and what were the charms they could appeal with. Inviting a fan randomly to stage, they presented her with special fan service. For only one fan they gave her infinite kindness and showered her with gifts, triggering jealousy and firmly winning the women’s heart.
They transform into Girl’s Generation through cross-dressing, presenting their fans with laughter. While dancing to Girl’s Generation’s “Genie” (Tell me your wish), B1A4 exposed their superior legs. Wearing white marine look and different color wigs, the members boasted their sensuous figure as a girl group.
During their ending and encore stage the members burst into tears that they were holding back and stimulated the sensitivity of their fans. B1A4 said, “We don’t know how to react because this is our first exclusive concert that we all dreamed about. During our trainee days we always thought “Could I really debut?”” and continued, “I’m sorry because I can only tell you “thank you.” Since I have good memory, I will remember all the audience. I love you.”, making a grand finale of their exclusive concert.
Meanwhile, B1A4’s exclusive concert will be held again on 9th at the same location.
The 180 minutes that explained the reason why B1A4 is “The President of Girls”
It was the 180 minutes that proved the B1A4’s potentials as “The President of Girls”.
On 8th, the quintet idol group B1A4 (Jinyoung, Baro, Sandeul, CNU, Gongchan) opened their first exclusive concert, “BABA B1A4” at Seoul Olympic Handball Stadium.
The reason why B1A4’s concert is catching one’s attention is because it’s an exclusive concert opened only after debuting for about 500 days and after considering the fact that there are only a handful of boy groups in the domestic music industry that have the ability to open their exclusive concert, for a rookie group who hasn’t even debuted for a full 2 year to hold their solo concert is an extremely exceptional case.
The biggest reason why B1A4 could open their exclusive concert this fast is because of their strong and firm formation of fandom which is solid enough to make them “The President of Girls”. After debuting in April 2011, B1A4 gained more than 120,000 domestic fans, now boasting a solid fandom.
As if B1A4 was actually proving their solid fandom, tickets for “BABA B1A4” were sold out in 5 minutes and additional tickets were sold out in 10 minutes. Total of 11,000 tickets were all sold out and it was safe to said that all fans who visited their concert hall were teenage girls, showing overwhelming age groups and gender and proving that their nickname- “The President of Girls” was not an overstatement.
Furthermore, as if the five members of B1A4 were responding to their fans’ anticipation they started their show with “Beautiful Target” and continued with their hit songs, “Bling Girl”, “Because of you”, “Tried to Walk” and received explosive cheering.
That’s not all, B1A4 progressed their concert in an unique way called “Music Drama” along with the beauty of exclusive concerts- member’s solo stages and surprise cross-dress stage and by preparing many various performances, they released their charms which they couldn’t show their fans till now and made the concert more splendid and colorful.
Showing off their stage manners and live performance talent which are unlike any other rookie, after creating a 180 minutes full of passion and cheering, B1A4 said, “Standing on this stage feels like a dream and I’m happy.” and continued “For us to open a concert after debuting a year and 8 month was only possible because of you guys.”, not forgetting the appreciative words to their fans.
At present, most of the boy groups aim on fandom than popularity and B1A4 is selected as the most successful group to secure a solid fandom among the recently debuted groups.
For this reason, they receive criticism as a group that is only popular among a specific age group but the charms displayed by B1A4 on this day became a good reason why the girls fell for them.
Meanwhile, B1A4 held their first exclusive concert “BABA B1A4” on 8th and 9th at Seoul Olympic Handball Stadium for 2 days.
B1A4 grabs the title, “Next generation Performance-dol” with their first concert
The quintet idol group B1A4 (Jinyoung, Baro, Sandeul, CNU, Gongchan) successfully opened their first exclusive concert “BABA B1A4” on 8th at Olympic SK Handball Stadium, Seoul, Bangi-dong. Debuting on April 23rd with their EP album “Let’s Fly”, it’s been only a year and 8 months or 596 days (600th day on December 12th) since their debut and it is a remarkable accomplishment.
They lightly passed over 120,000 members in their domestic official fan community and in June this year, they made their official debut in Japan, also gaining popularity. B1A4 proved their potentials as the next generation Hallyu idol. Their first exclusive concert was a fluttering yet, an assignment that they had to finish.
▶Warning: your heart might explode, “Bang! Bang! Be careful of your heart”
The members who confessed “I’m shaking” in their waiting room before going on stage transformed 180 degrees as their show started and exploded with energy. Making the title of “2 year since their debut idol” colorless, they perfectly filled 180 minutes show and properly grabbed the position of the next generation “Performance Idol”. It was a concert that clearly showed the reason why you had to visit their concert hall. Rather than greetings, accordingly arranged tracks from their last year album and newest album “Beautiful Target”, “Bling Girl” and “In the Air” were performed instead for the concert of B1A4 and their fans. Baro snatched Sandeul’s excited “I think my heart might explode because I’m so happy” comment and said, “We can’t be the only ones exploding. Don’t you guys want to explode too? Bang! Bang! Be careful of your hearts” like an experienced master(?), electrifying 5500 fans who packed the concert venue.
While sitting around the edge of the rotating circular floor in front of the T-shaped stage, the members sang “Chu Chu Chu”, eye contacting with fans while their stage rotated 360 degrees. They also showed their serious side by performing “Because of you” and “IF….(If I only had you)” continuously. However, when the video of “1 plus 1 is cutie” played on screen, for the fans who kept calling each member’s name saying “Show us!” the members showed their own “cutie” version, presenting the fans with perfect fan service.
Jinyoung said “You shouldn’t be like this. We transformed into men from boys.”, informing the start of their title track from their latest album “Tried to Walk”. Lately, fans occasionally watched their performance of “Tried to Walk” on music shows but seeing their performance at their exclusive concert made the fans feel odd and fresh. The black and white close-ups of the members shown in the giant screen at the sides of the stage added different effects. Their performance of “Only Learned Bad Things” from their debut album followed by their ballad track “This Time is Over” lead the fans to perfectly sing along together.
▶The true stories of the members? Music drama, “If I debut…”
The members who were worrying about the content of their music drama, “We have to show a different side of us to the fans who visit our concert” shown in the video became a reality at their concert venue when the members appeared on stage with benches, streetlight, basketball post and more while standing under the pin-light. The music drama of their members as the lead characters had begun. Sandeul, CNU, Baro and Gongchan were trainees who always failed at auditions while Jinyoung played as an ex-trainee who is now a flower-boy popcorn seller.
Their acting and singing was like a completed scene of a musical. Sandeul who kept on failing the audition because of his looks made the fans more absorbed, increasing the sense of reality because it was Sandeul’s first real confession after debuting as a member of B1A4 during an interview.
Throwing away the obvious pattern of solo stages that appear in every concert of group idols, they added freshness through a music drama. Sandeul who lacked confidence and worried because of his looks passionately sang Panic’s “Left Handed” in high notes and CNU who was blinded by his excessive baseless confidence performed Wheesung’s “With me” with female dancers, making their female fans to scream (?). Baro who broke up with his girlfriend sang “Just the two of us” (Feat. Miss A, Min), a self composed song from their album but he was criticized by Sandeul who said “You are being pathetic”.
Even the service track was wildly provided. An unreleased track “I’m burning” was performed by CNU and Baro, captivating their fans with strongly addictive and repetitive chorus “I’m burning~ I’m burning” and Gongchan won the ladies’ hearts by performing their unreleased track “Would you like to sing together?” with a choreography using a white umbrella. While standing on the empty stage without the 4 members, Jinyoung who played the popcorn seller said “At one time, I used to be like them too” and perfectly performed his solo track “Be My Girl” (Feat. Brown Eyed Girls, JeA) from their album, completing their well scripted music drama.
▶The meaning of “fans” to B1A4… “Girlfriend” who knows all the charms of the members
Throughout their concert, B1A4 members called their fans as their girlfriends. They notice all their charms, they repeated that their fans are the only and precious ones who they can trust and depend on and said “Today’s concert was only possible because of you guys.”, conveying their gratitude and also got their fans to promise them as their only love by telling them “You shouldn’t flirt with others than us~”.
The promise which they made during their past interview, “If we hold our exclusive concert, we will cross-dress and do Girl’s Generation’s dance” became a reality. Showing off their muscular legs under the skirts of the white Girl’s Generation uniform, they reenacted “Genie (Tell me your wish)” but because of their strong principle of “We must keep our promise with our fans” they opened a proud stage.
With mixed performances of “What shall we do?, “So Fine”, “Feeling”, “Super Sonic” which were hard to see and the stages of their popular songs “Sleep well, good night”, “Baby I’m sorry” the concert was reaching its final stage. Before performing their closing song “O.K”, the members started tearing while they expressed their thoughts and at the end, they cried because they were unable to keep back the tears. Leader Jinyoung was choking with emotion and tearfully repeated, “I’m happy”, “It feels like a dream” and continued, “Do you know how sorry I am because I can only tell you that we are thankful?” conveying his sincerity in words.
The concert hall presented a magnificent sight of yellow-green ocean in the darkness by the pastel apple-lime colored light sticks created for the fans. Even after their performance of the ending song “O.K”, B1A4 reappeared on stage by the fans continued shout of “encore” and performed “Only You”, “You are my Girl” and successfully completed their first concert since their debut.

The concert really was excellent. WM Entertainment continues to be really smart in how they handle B1A4: the venue was small but decent to hold the 5000+ people, costumes and sets were minimal but not bad at all. Their profit margin had to be pretty good--and they could have made more on merchandise, which was desperately understocked. Both times the line had at least a thousand people; I came on the second day two hours before they opened sales, was several hundred people back in line. They sold out of hoodies in 10 minutes. There was also remarkably little gaffes for a first concert, audio and everything was great. Some organizational problems at the beginning, but that's Korea for you. It was a great show, and I would gladly go again! If you have questions, feel free to ask. ^^

They have done so much... 3 Minis, a Full Album, a Repackage, 2 OSTs, 2 Japanese singles and a Japanese full album. Not to mention 3 tv shows, MC roles, acting roles on dramas, a musical, roles on IS2, and now a solo concert. Sometimes I seriously forget that they only in their second year of promoting..
I just wish the best for them and hope they continue to be happy and grow as musicians.
Oh and apparently Jinyoung let it slip in his latest fancafe post that some of the girls performing with them are trainees and he can't wait till they debut. I'm excited to see what WM can do with a girl group since B1A4 was so well managed.
