Park Yoochun, “Han Jung Woo, Walked Towards Me As Though Destined”

Challenging acting of deep emotional troubled love and being thick-skinned in ‘Missing You’

“Always bumping into boundary and growing up slowly”

Though his transformation was sensed in his previous work ‘Rooftop Prince’, his image this time took a further change.

Foremost, the character is a rash and strong headed criminal investigator. The music notes idiot who doesn’t care and yet sang to his will in the karaoke room. Living as a warmhearted blood-related son who would say to his non-related ‘mother’ that he felt guilty with, “Lover, do not have an affair when I am not around!”

This is just one part of the acting he is presenting. The other side is the deep love harbored for 14 years which was hidden deep in his heart and the longing he had for his first love.

Park Yoochun (26) who was a Kpop star and who have always been acting as the handsome ‘young mister’, went up a notch this time in the acting prospect with MBC Wednesday-Thursday drama ‘Missing You’ as Han Jung Woo. Though there was still some incompleteness, nobody can deny that he is currently moving up the scale.

Park Yoochun who we met recently at the MBC filming studio in Ilsan said, “Han Jung Woo, walked towards me as though destined”

“After the conclusion of ‘Rooftop Prince’, I went to USA and received the synopsis for ‘Missing You’. After reading it for a whole night, I immediately agreed on it. Usually the decision was done after reading for a few times but this time, I made the decision straight away.”

He ever thought of acting such a character like Han Jung Woo, and coincidentally he met this project.

“If the characters that I have previously took on were of calm and cool-headed characters, then the strong feeling from Han Jung Woo is completely opposite. I think this is a character that any male actors would love to take on. He is reckless and thick-skinned, domineering and have to fight too. Coupled with the heavy emotional scenes, the emotional exhaustion is huge too. I think that I can display a variety of outlooks.”

Till the 8th episode shown on 29th, Park Yoochun have already received comments that he has successfully transformed. Han Jung Woo is one who is crafty yet warmhearted young and energetic character who have no idea what sudden issues might happen. His fatal point is his first love Lee Soo Yeon and the painful memory and emotional wounds felt towards her would appear time to time, resulting him into a deeply emotional innocent guy.

“Thank you for looking at me this way. I thought a lot in the beginning. The meeting during childhood days and the parting. That painful love was time-jumped to 14 years later. I was afraid there would be a gap. What would life be for Han Jung Woo 14 years later? I analysed the character a lot. Han Jung Woo doesn’t like living in the past memory. He was tortured by his guilt for 14 years and the determination to find her is his only reason for living. But Han Jung Woo’s caring attitude for others and thick skinned character are something I would like to bring along with me. Actually he was born in a family with good conditions and was pampered till he was 15 years old. I think those habits at that time should remain. Soo Yeon thought Jung Woo abandoned her and ran away but in fact, Jung Woo looked for her for 14 years and have been living in kindness. Therefore the pain inflicted during the childhood days have to be shown naturally in order for this heart wrenching relationship between the two leads to be portrayed to everyone in a refreshing way.”

He said, “Jung Woo is a charming character.”, “But I will not plan meticulously my acting and will not be so forcefully. I will accept Jung Woo’s situation and depict it wholly. Always thinking of his inner-being. Natural acting is my aim.”

Will Park Yoochun wait for a lady whose status is unknown like Han Jung Woo for 14 years?

“I think longing and love are different. I personally might reminisces about the days I had with the one I have broken up with but to say that was a longing for love, it is very unclear. Even when a love ended, there would be a period of time that I would pursue those memory. When those memories in my heart are completely forgotten, I would then feel that the love has really ended. Other than that kind of longing, I have not experienced the longing or somewhat similar to what Jung Woo had."

Then, what does it feels like to be portraying Han Jung Woo’s deep love?

“Our drama originally consists of heavy sad emotions and thus there were many emotional scenes. I felt it myself that ‘Emotional love scenes are actually very tough genre’. As I kept having emotions pouring out, I feel exhausted. As the reactions were good, I happily continued filming.

Park Yoochun is one of those actors who became better everytime, especially being a representative of successful ‘Acting Idol’.

I have forgotten how did I filmed my debut drama ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’. The time passed in a flash. Thinking back, I was really glad that ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’ was my first work. If were to say that time was based on 100% duty, then it’s based on what I wish to act. It’s very different I guess. In fact acting was not comfortable to me even till ‘Miss Ripley’. As it was done after ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’, the burden to act well was huge and thus I looked uncomfortable and unnatural. But as it was the toughest, I gained the most. During ‘Rooftop Prince’, I decide to put down everything and act with a neutral mindset. My acting became natural and it was very interesting. Thus I really wish to take on the next work faster. As JYJ’s activities are important as well, therefore I had planned to act in one drama per year but to think that I wanted to act other characters sooner, made me had a greed for acting.

“To understand acting even more, there are many considerations to make but I am not afraid. As a lead, though it has to lead the drama, a drama is after-all a work from everyone’s effort. The lead actors also have to receive a lot of help from others in order to help in acting. It would be a relief to think like this.”

Park Yoochun said, he displayed 100% of himself for every work.

“Every time I would show out my everything. But this ‘everything’, increased as I act in every drama. Every time I experienced difficulties and reaching the boundaries, I would be growing a bit at a time. I understood that this drama would be very tough and thus also entered with determination. Because there are many emotional scenes. Put it in a nice way, it’s an anticipation for myself. On the flip side, if I accidentally fail, I would be distressed. I have such a worry too. But one has to get in touch with it constantly in order to grow your own potential isn’t it?”

Once again standing at the starting point as an actor, but as a singer, he is already a Kpop star with fans worldwide. Through TVXQ and now as JYJ, he continued to be active as both actor and singer. Each time after digesting a ‘killer’ schedule, he said it was ‘very blessed’ instead.

“In happiness. Of course there were times when drama filming and concert tours clashes and it was inconvenient. But JYJ’s activities are important as well. ‘Both are mandatory’. Thinking like this, I felt better. (laughs) After receiving so much concern and love, that level of difficulty is tolerable. I think that I am born to be blessed and have always been thanking everyone. I felt that my interaction relationships with others have been very good too as there were many people who helped me. There was a time where popularity is my burden. Now, I am very thankful and very happy. The belief to repay grew stronger every single day.”

On the 28th, news of conclusion to the lawsuit of JYJ and their ex-representative company SM Entertainment came to a complete end. It has been a three and four months war.

“I am very happy. Though times were tough, it was well bearable due to the mutual dependency from fellow members. Activities were restricted but I have to work even harder and our luck has been pretty good. When JYJ just started, there were only 5 staffs in C-JeS. Now we have over 40 staffs. The responsibility is bigger now.”

What does ‘Actor Park Yoochun’ wants to present to everyone?

“I hoped to let everyone see my acting and gaining hope after receiving strength. Isn’t there viewers who will be touched or gained hope after watching good acting? Watching my acting, my works, it will be good if everyone will be hopeful about life. Giving happiness to everyone… I want to be such an actor.”

It's pretty long and even though I think his thoughts on acting and such are interesting, I can't bold everything. So his direct quotes are in italics.

Is the show any good? I love YEH beyond anything but melodrama's put me off, and the post about the childhood trauma is too awful.

Well, I would say it is quite good, and usually I'm not really into melodramas. At all. Except for Nice Guy and now I Miss You.
It has really nice production values (I study mvoie and tv production, I care for that a lot :)) and the acting is good, the plot is thick and it's worth a watch, I would say.

I love YC and So Yeon mom interaction... He is soo greasy around her and called her 'lover' and such..
And EunJoo know it and squirm in embarrassment for their antique.

I love I Miss You, so far the best melodrama this year for me. Yuchun is definitely a natural at acting. Love all the gifs and lol YC looks more like a GQ model in the gif where he wears that brown turtle neck, than a detective. Thanks.
