Miss Panda & Hedgehog was a drama you could smile at.
The recording location mood was great from the beginning. Park Geun Hyung sunbae-nim came to me and talked to me first though he didn’t have a scene at the beginning. He told me he was very happy no matter how hard the recording was so I did my best to remember that.

You just debuted as an actor and we were very happy you acted with much manners.
That is also influence of Park Geunhyung teacher and Yang Heekyung teacher treating me like their real son. It was hard approaching them at first because they are big sunbaes but they greeted me every time and taught me how to act.

We were surprised to see your Park Geunhyun being very friendly without a wall. Is he not strict?
Many people ask if he is scary when I say I acted with him but I just call him grandpa. He learned how to text just to reply to me. He told me to keep this a secret from his students because they will be jealous. At first script reading, I begged him to teach me acting. Then he said, ‘You should do what you prepard, not imitating me!’. So I replied, ‘ I really can’t understand. Really don’t know. Please teach me.’ Other sunbaenims died laughing.

Haha. They must have thought you are bold.
They laughed and said, ‘What did this kid say? Hahaha.’ Script writers and producer says, ‘He doesn’t care about what others think. Just laugh over it’

Did it leave a good impression?
If I planned it earlier, I wouldn’t have been able to do that. I really wanted to learn comfortably with him, saying what I want and expressing what I want. Teacher told me my ears have to be opened when it comes to criticisms, so I tried my best. Getting scolded and even looking stupid doesn’t matter.

Because of that stance, you two look natural starting from episode 8
I think I learned how to act as I went on. Nobody can start off doing it well. If I couldn’t do well on EP2, I could fill the gap in EP3. If I couldn’t fill in EP3, I could fill in EP10.

Is Go Seungji similar to real Donghae’s image? In some interviews, you said you acted while about hard times?
He is most similar with my personality. Script writer also knew my hard past so I think he wrote it to where I can read it easily.

Some actors complain about their normal past, saying they can’t relate to the character’s hard situation.
There is a saying I repeated to myself ever since I was a child. No matter how hard my situation is, there is always someone living in a harder situation. I believed that my family’s problems and sadness will create a good experience. Being able to think of sad emotions while acting is very important. Not having any experience makes it harder. I felt some limitations. Especially while talking fast, I kept running out of breath.

You seem to be full of thoughts.. Could be taken as you’re serious.
Yes, I should have played more with the character this time. Go Seungji acts without thinking but I was thinking too much. Actually, I felt confused. When you show anger, you can’t just scream or just glare… but I couldn’t decide on which to do, But I was able to learn much so it was fun.

Can we anticipate for another great work before you go to the army?
I hope to do a goow work in 2 years but I’m not in a rush. I can do well in 30’s and even after 40’s too.

I don’t think there has been this many great actors in 20’s/30’s before. That means competition is high. How would you convince the producer of a movie that you really wanted to take part in?
I should be prepared more than working hard to convince him. When I was 20, I had a change to talk with LSM, SM staffs, and Kang Jaegyu Producer. I memorized a script before going. I introduced myself ‘Hello, I am Donghae. I will act out a script’ and acted it out. My acting probably was bad but I said, ‘I want to act someday for your work’ and left the meeting. He probably doesn’t remember me. Honestly, I may lack in skill with other actors of myage but I think I am near them. Most producers ask ‘are you good in acting?’ I reply, ‘ I will do my best but I can act well. Please let me do it. I really will do it like crazy. I will die if you don’t let me, so please let me take part.’ I let them know I really want to act. If I have my own chance, I think it’s the ability to talk straight forward like this. I lived like this since I was a child, I must do what I want. Before becoming a singer, I thought while watching TV, ‘I will be singing. I will receive awards.’

Would you throw away pride for something you have set as a goal?
If I can achieve it, the middle part is not important. When I was 14, I watched BoA on TV. I thought, ‘she’s my age but she’s up there. Why am I having to watch this’ and got angry, I then went straight and took a picture of me and sent it to SM. I received a call back so I auditioned and became a trainee. Even now, I usually call the producers and script writers first when I hear about good works. The company tries too but showing own will to act is good too, isn’t it? ‘He says he wants to do it, and “I want to do it” is different.

Your personality must not match with some of the srict regulationgs your company sets for you. Your honest interview contrast to your manager checking each question before interview.
Honestly, I don’t care. My thought can be different than the company. It could be a concept. I do want them to understand. I’m used to what Idols can do and can’t do now though.

Like the actors that complain about their normal lives, won’t your restricted life as a celebrity in your 20’s restrict your growth in acting from now on?
I do agree that I need to play to act. I do lack that. I don’t remember playing in my life. I never enjoyed going to to nightclubs, not because it’s bad but thinking ‘will this affect me?’ and I worry. I think I should play more from now on. I am okay with scandals. I want to marry quickly. I want to play with my kids.

It will be hard if you continue to live like this though
Really? Should I wrap up this life then.. but can’t I continue to act after marriage?

Of course you can. But it’s not easy for actors to marry early. Before 30’s is early.
That’s when I want to marry. 30 or 31. Right after coming back from army.

Then the next 2 years will be very important. The actor acting well is important but also the producer too. Which producer can change you well?
The one who changed me to right now is Park Geunhyung teacher. I think he will continue to teach me. The scenes with him are precious to me. If I have to choose a producer, it’s hard. I don’t know producers well yet.

Actor Yoon Joonsang always said in his interviews he wanted to appear on Hong Sangsu’s director movies. And he did.
My style is different. If I have to choose on, I want to do one with Kim Jeewon producer.. It think ‘Sweet Life’ is the best.

How about musicals? You are good in singing, and you want to act.
Haha I can’t sing. There are many talented ones like ones from ‘Superstar K’!

I guess you really want to act
I really want to do a movie. Not a cool role but roles like Cha Taehyun sunbaenim. Romantic comedies are great. I wish Siwon will do roles that break his image too. If Siwon does ‘Ghost lives here’ type of movie, wouldn’t it be daebak?

What if Donghae does it?
Would it fit me?

I love this interview. I adore his relationship with grandpa. Although I do think a romantic comedy would not be too much of a stretch since his role in SJ is the romantic one. His acting in hedgehog grew, probably because this role was the closest thing to his real personality (he said this). I need a new Donghae drama in my life. He has the drive to keep getting better. I am curious when he may appear in a Goo Hye Sun directed film since they are friends.

I don't know but, I always think Donghae is an honest person.. even if he hides parts of his personality, what he says is what he thinks..

and I havent watched panda & hedgehog since korean dramas tend to bore me.. but maybe i'll give it a try to catch more glimpse of Donghae's personality..

Panda & Hedgehog was adorable, but typical Korean drama ....and unfortunately the majority of the female characters, (including his love interest), make no sense. If you saw It's Okay Daddy's Daughter, this is by the same writers and company....and just as much as plot insanity, especially when it comes to the romance. BUT it is worth watching it for Donghae and his relationship with grandpa, and all the lovely baked goods.

I watched the 1st eps of It's Okay Daddy's Daughter and I gave up.. I watched only the Donghae's cuts afterwards..
