E2RE (‘E-Two-R-E’), a new 4 member rookie girl group, has unveiled their first video teaser for their debut track “Deep Night Sad Song“.

Their debut album will be dropping on the 31st, but ahead of its release, they’ve revealed a teaser for their upcoming music video that stars popular actors Lee Sun Gyun and Oh Yeon Seo (Lee Joon‘s ‘wife’ on ‘We Got Married‘).

Their name, E2RE, is supposed to be formed after the word “etoiler”, a French verb, and is said to signify the group’s wish to become a shining star of the music scene.

french was my third language but i cant even decipher what they are going for here. maybe the next teaser will reveal they are really called étoiles dorées, i like that joke better than a "rhyme" for étoiler.

Me too. I know the word étoile...I didn't know there was a verb related to it. To star? Is that even a verb jfc.

Means full of stars. It's usually used as an adjective not a verb.
I guess "starry" would be a proper translation.

You also use it to describe something that is covered or full of little objects... like this field is "étoilé" by little flowers.

You can also use it for a Chef who has a star, in that case "un chef étoilé" is "a starred chef"

Ya it's just so wrong. YG is usually pretty good with their English but I can't believe there isn't even a French-Canadian working there to comment...

Yeah that was weird.
I only remember her speaking french once but it was good that's why I was expecting her to speak french in Cannes too... I guess they did the whole think in english cause teh other members would get lost otherwise

LOL I'm french and I didn't even know that the verb 'étoiler' was correct. It indeed means 'to put stars all over stuff', to make it simple.

Date: 2012-10-30 11:24 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] benihime99.livejournal.com
Yeah I don't think we actually use the verb, only the adjective

I know right, like nuit étoilée and so on, but I never heard of je vais étoiler ce mur or anything like that.

From: [identity profile] benihime99.livejournal.com
I think they're a bit confused and think "étoiler" means "to become a star" or something... E2RE doesn't even sound like "étoiler" in the first place

I looked it up and it also means fissuring or cracking something into shards?
"fêler quelque chose en étoile (étoiler un miroir)"

That doesn't sound like the kind of meaning you'd want associated with a debut :/

I didn't even know that. Kpop is making me feel like a fail at my own language and that is not supposed to happen either lol.

I think they looked up a word on google translate and didn't check with any French speakers that it's a word people actually use lol

Ahahah then I don't blame them, I do that too when I don't know a word in Korean. (Then my friends end up laughing or saying 'cute' at my enormous mistakes. Thanks for nothing google translate.)
