K-Pop girl group, Girls' Generation, recently gave a live concert on streaming video site Nico Nico Douga, but it has caused some criticism on the web. The event, held at Nico Nico Douga's live house, 'Nico Farre,' was a collaboration between both sides.

"Girls' Generation have typically been selling at a very high level, but then they changed course and did a live streaming performance on Nico Nico Douga. Among K-Pop industry workers, something like Nicodou, when compared to television, is pretty low in status. The types of offers that these girls got before had been coming in steadily but recently had stopped. During the planning stages of this collaboration with Nicodou, even the people working there were surprised by their participation. Some cynical people there said, 'Thanks to the Takeshima Problem, they've stepped down to working with Nico Nico Douga [instead of TV],'" said one music writer.

Many netizens have agreed with this sentiment, writing online, "Their level and pride have really fallen," "They've fallen this far??" and "They were selling at a high level, what happened suddenly?!" among other things.

Despite the Takeshima Problem which has enveloped Japan-Korea relations, and the obvious decline of K-Pop, it's possible that Girls' Generation would continue selling at a good level. Their recent single, "Oh!" even managed to get the top spot on Oricon's Weekly Singles Chart. It's incomprehensible to say that they've "fallen down," we thought...

"No, despite getting #1, comparing their initial sales to that of their previous works, it was a 30% drop. Their single before, 'Paparazzi' sold 89,000 in its first week, but 'Oh!' managed just 63,000. They've lost their previous momentum. In addition to that, because of the Takeshima Problem, the appearance of K-Pop on television has been somewhat discouraged. It wasn't a strategic move to do the Nicodou live, you could tell their hearts weren't even in the performance," said the music writer.

Truly, Girls' Generation members looked bored during their performances, appearing indifferent. It left an impression that it was not a performance that they had expected or wanted to do. It could also have been the fact that this free online performance was during TV Asahi's "Music Station" that got them down.

"After not being invited on TV, doing Nicodou could be seen as a bit of rebellion against the TV channels that aren't allowing K-Pop artists to appear as much."

It could be true that the Nico Nico Douga performance was a positive strategy for the girls. But no matter how one looks at it, this was a strategic mistake. Whether one likes it or not, the K-Pop boom is showing signs of ending.

Except SNSD were on plenty of shows on Broadcasting Networks and not only performed Oh, but All my love is for you too. This article sounds dumb.

is artle is talking like nico nico is nothing when isn't it basically the youtube of Japan? besides, there are fewer and fewer music programs in japan these days, so there are just fewer chances to perform on tv

as for oh!, people have probably heard it already and don't care. if anything was a strategic mistake, it was releasing a remake after an original japanese song

Whaaatttt? That whole section about them being bored and indifferent during the NicoNico perf/interview is completely false. I saw that interview and it was actually really fun and interactive; the girls participated a lotttt. Quite a few of them (Seohyun, Yoona, and obv Sooyoung) were even conversing back and forth with the three interviewers pretty regularly. Not to mention people like Sunny, Jessica, Hyoyeon, and TAEYEON (who is usually very quiet) were really talkative and active. There was also a lot of standing and physical participation (ie. dancing) required on this program and they were all pretty eager to join in.

Also this article reads very weird. They constantly mention "the Takeshima Problem" to the point where it becomes obvious they are the ones trying to create a connection between Korean artists promotions in Japan, and an obviously controversial national issue in order to stir up bad sentiment.

um who cares, they did a show for nico nico douga and probably reached a massive audience too. sometimes it's a good strategy to humble yourself. also maybe they want to change their image to more approachable idols. that seems to work in japan.

wtf is this, they went to many Japanese music shows and performed more than one song, so what's the big deal about them doing this gig?

Besides this sounding like hogwash, I'm not even a SONE and this is really insulting. Any performances is better than none, as long as everyone is safe and you're doing what you love. Streaming live is like recording a performance with no audience and then airing, at least to me.

If the girls weren't into it because it was a live stream/being shown while MS was playing, I think that's kind of sad. I would always try to put my best into every performance, regardless if I liked where I was. However, if it was Oh!, lol I don't any of them are going to look happy because I definitely think they've gotten past the cutesy stage or they want to. That and performing the same song gets really dull.

Typical Cyzo article...as others have mentioned they've been on regular Japanese TV shows to promote Oh! as well. MSta isn't the only music show out there. Also the livestreams on Nico Nico Douga are very popular and a lot of J-artists and J-idols do them, I don't see any shame in SNSD doing one. It probably attracted many people who weren't interested in SNSD or K-pop before.

As for Oh's sales not being as good, it's probably because it's a remake after a string of original songs, and not only that but it's a doinky remake. Wait to see how Flower Power and their upcoming second album will do before judging things.

Seriously, the article doesn't have a clear story. I guess it's supposed to be:

Kpop is ending in japan!

NicoNicoDouga is beneath SNSD although it's the best they can do in this climate

Doing this streaming means they have no pride/they should have just refused to do anything/it would have been better if they hadn't done it because they looked bored

SHUN THEM
